The destinations at breaking point from overtourism – and where to go instead
As the British weather teases summer and suitcases are stuffed with suncream, new tourist taxes and ongoing overtourism protests are changing the travel landscape in Europe.
Last summer, a string of anti-tourism protests against overcrowding met holidaymakers visiting Barcelona and the Balearic Islands during peak season.
According to new research by Which?, European hotspots, including Zante, Paris and Mallorca, are among the destinations worst affected by overtourism.
The consumer champion analysed European Commission (EC) tourism numbers from 2023 to identify the places overrun with footfall and those where it's easy to find a quiet corner.
Which? crowned Zante, also known as Zakynthos, in Greece the capital of overtourism, with the highest 'tourist pressure' – number of tourists per resident – after the island of just 40,000 people welcomed six million overnight stays in 2023. That's 150 overnight stays for every resident.
Croatia 's Istria peninsula closely followed with 133 overnight tourist stays for each person that lives in the area.
As for the destinations under the least pressure from tourists, Lille clocked just two overnight stays for every resident in the Nord region and Teleorman, Romania, recorded only 20 overnight stays per 1,000 residents in 2023.
Between overtourism protests, Spanish island Mallorca clocked 51 million overnight stays – the most in Europe – in 2023, with a population of 966,000 people.
The French capital, Paris, had around 44 million overnight stays in the same year, compared to its population of 2.1 million.
Which? found that this gave the city the most tourists per square kilometre, a huge 418,280, followed by Greece's Athens (88,534.92) and Copenhagen in Denmark (63,943.88).
According to its analysis, Murcia is the least visited part of Spain's Mediterranean coast, with 486 overnight stays per square km, and the Estonian seaside resort Haapsalu is another quiet alternative at around 120 overnight stays by tourists per square km.
Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, said: 'What this data shows is that overtourism has overwhelmed some of Europe's most popular destinations. With so many fantastic places in Europe, the truth is, you are going to have a far better holiday in a destination where there are not hundreds or even thousands more tourists than there are locals.
'Try Estonia for stunning coastlines and, yes, warm weather, during summer. Or if you want to stick with Spain, Murcia is a great option.'

The couple welcomed their first child together, a daughter called Patricia - named after his late mother who tragically passed away in 2008 - in September 2018. Frank also has daughters Luna, 19, and Isla, 17, with his former partner Elen Rivas, but they went their separate ways in 2008. Christine previously told how she thinks the secret to her marriage with Frank is that they are still each other's best friend. She said: 'We're still absolute best mates. He'll be the first person I'll pick the phone up to sort anything out with. And the biggest thing for me going back to my love of comedy, is he makes me laugh. 'And that is such a powerful thing to me - I have to be able to have a giggle… We just have proper laughs. We have the same points of view on things. 'We don't argue over parenting or how things run in the house. We sort of sing off the same page and that sort of makes everything flow… 'The basis is, there's love, we've got each other's backs and we're supportive. And if he suggests that some job is happening and he wants to do it, we'll make it work.'

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya let his hair down for his stag do by dressing as an air stewardess and serving passengers on a flight to Las Vegas. Raya proposed to his model fiancee Tatiana Trouboul in October, but has had to wait until the end of the season for his bachelor party. With the campaign now over following Spain's Nations League final defeat by Portugal on Sunday, Raya is free to celebrate with his friends, and they pulled out all the stops as they headed Stateside. The 29-year-old was happy to wear an air stewardess outfit and he was pictured with a beaming smile as he handed over cookies to passengers during their flight to Vegas. Raya was joined by his brother Oscar and Spanish comedian Tomas Garcia Serrano. Several LaLiga footballers also made the trip, including Getafe's Diego Rico Salguero as well as Rayo Vallecano pair Adri Embarba and Unai Lopez. The group appeared in good spirits as they posed for a photo once they touched down in Vegas, with Raya also sharing photos from the famous Sin City strip. Snaps were also posted online of Raya posing in a swimming pool alongside his friends. Bright sunshine greeted Raya and Co as the Arsenal star kicked back and relaxed after a long, hard season. Raya and Trouboul's wedding date is currently unknown. The couple have been together since 2021, but did not go public with their relationship until the following year. Trouboul hails from Barcelona, but now lives in London with Raya, having moved her life across to the UK to support the Arsenal shot-stopper. Raya got down on one knee last year at a candlelit dinner, and subsequently posted photos of the evening shortly before Arsenal faced Bournemouth in the Premier League. The Gunners went on to lose that match 2-0, but Raya enjoyed another strong season at Arsenal as he finished as the Premier League Golden Glove winner alongside Nottingham Forest's Matz Sels. Raya now has some time off to enjoy his stag do and spend more time with Trouboul ahead of returning to pre-season training with Arsenal next month. He could face increased pressure for his place next season, with Arsenal set to bring in Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea. However, he is still likely to remain Mikel Arteta's No 1 for now after making that spot his own over the last two seasons.
