Tourism Act review set for completion by early 2025, says Motac
PUTRAJAYA, May 14 — The review of the Tourism Industry Act 1992 (Act 482), aimed at strengthening the governance of Malaysia's tourism sector, is expected to be completed by the first quarter of next year.
In a statement today, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) said the review began in August 2023 and has involved 54 engagement sessions with nearly 1,000 stakeholders. These include representatives from ministries, agencies, NGOs, and tourism industry players both locally and abroad.
The key proposed amendments include improvements to the licencing system, enhanced insurance protection, stronger enforcement mechanisms, registration of digital platforms, and the establishment of a Tourism Tribunal.
Motac expressed confidence that the proposed amendments would help position Malaysia as a sustainable, safe, culturally rich, and competitive tourism destination — aligned with the inclusive and reform-driven Malaysia Madani vision, particularly in the lead-up to Visit Malaysia 2026.
'The findings and proposed amendments were presented at the National Seminar on Regulatory Effectiveness in Addressing Issues and Challenges in the Malaysian Tourism Industry. held here today.
'The seminar also aimed to gather feedback to ensure the review is inclusive and considers views from all stakeholders,' Motac said.

Dayana sells from her car in the outdoor carpark of the business square Bistari De Kota along Jalan Teknologi 3/9 in Kota Damansara. The venue has been the spot for weekly car boot sales since 2013. It got a boost after being chosen to host celebrations marking 19 years since Petaling Jaya gained city status. Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin launched the celebrations, marking the start of 31 activities organised by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) under the theme 'Petaling Jaya Bandar Paling Bahagia'. The activities, including community programmes and competitions, are being held throughout June. Accompanying the Tengku Permaisuri in visiting the booths were Selangor Women's Welfare and Charity Organisation (Pekawanis) president Datin Seri Masdiana Muhamad and Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon. The Kota Damansara car boot sale is the second such community event being held regularly in Petaling Jaya. Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, accompanied by the Petaling Jaya mayor, visiting the booths set up at the Kota Damansara car boot sale. Another one is held at Kompleks C MBPJ in Section 52. The Kota Damansara sale runs from 7am to 12pm on Sunday while the Section 52 sale is from 6pm to midnight on Saturday. Both events, which are community-run and monitored by MBPJ, offer a total of 647 parking bays for sellers. Mohamad Zahri said several other initiatives were kicked off during the anniversary celebrations launch. These included 'Food With Love', a new care economy programme organised by MBPJ. 'The project will see halal meals prepared at a central kitchen run by a non-governmental organisation (NGO). 'The meals will be distributed to eligible senior citizens and disabled individuals who register under MBPJ's guidelines,' he said. Mohamad Zahri highlighted that MBPJ was the first local council to introduce a senior citizens' guideline − the Senior Citizen Action Plan 2030 − to address the needs of a growing ageing population. He added that MBPJ was also the first local council in Malaysia to have set up a children's council. Mohamad Zahri said the anniversary theme was aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Malaysia Madani and the First Selangor Plan. 'MBPJ has offered free training programmes since 2022. 'More than 5,000 business owners have participated in courses covering marketing, AI tools, and banking,' he said. The mayor said MBPJ had also been sending the top 10 participants for overseas educational trips annually. 'Past destinations have included Bandung, Bangkok and Vietnam. China may be the destination for this year,' he said. At the launch, Malaysia Book of Records held a presentation to recognise MBPJ for having played a leading role in setting up the PJ Eco Recycling Plaza. The three-floor recycling centre in Sungai Way Free Trade Industrial Zone was set up in collaboration with seven NGOs and professional bodies. The Eco Recycling Plaza has been officially recognised by Malaysia Book of Records as the country's first excellent-rated centre of environmental sustainability managed by a local authority.

Viral tariff schedule is fake, says TNB
TNB has clarified that it did not issue a widely circulated electricity tariff schedule that bears its logo and claims a tariff hike. (TNB pic) PETALING JAYA : Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has dismissed a widely circulated electricity tariff schedule on WhatsApp as fake, urging the public not to fall for any misinformation. In a statement today, TNB clarified that the schedule, which bears the TNB logo and claims of a tariff hike, is fake and was not issued by the company. 'The false schedule misleadingly suggests a tariff increase that features the TNB logo,' it said. 'The circulation of such false information is creating unnecessary confusion among customers.' TNB stressed that as of today, no official announcement has been made regarding any changes to electricity tariffs affecting consumers. The company also reminded the public to be responsible with the content they share online. 'We strongly advise the public to avoid sharing unverified information,' it said. For accurate and updated information, TNB urged consumers to refer only to official government and TNB platforms for any updates on electricity tariffs. Last December, TNB proposed a new tariff schedule with a base tariff of 45.62 sen per kilowatt-hour for Peninsular Malaysia under Regulatory Period 4 (RP4), for implementation from July 1, 2025. The base tariff under RP3 had been set at 39.95 sen/kWh between 2022 and 2024. Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof then said no decision had been made on the new tariff as the government was still finalising the matter. Fadillah is also the energy transition and water transformation minister.

Activists retract claims against Penang exco in defamation dispute

(X pic) GEORGE TOWN : Penang executive councillor Zairil Khir Johari has withdrawn his defamation suit against activists Ravinder Singh and Khoo Salma Nasution after all parties reached a settlement. The dispute concerned a video shared by the activists that linked Zairil's family to the appointment of the project delivery partner for the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project. Under the settlement, recorded before sessions court judge Sharmila Abdul Samad via e-review, Zairil, the state infrastructure committee chairman, agreed to drop the suit without costs and waived the right to refile it. In return, Ravinder and Khoo removed the video from their social media platforms and agreed not to repost it. The settlement included a joint statement from the activists, who expressed regret for any embarrassment or harm caused to Zairil or his family. They acknowledged that the allegations in the video were unfounded. 'All parties believe that resolving the matter is in the best interest of everyone involved,' the statement read. The video was part of a protest campaign against the PSR, a land reclamation project off the southern coast of Penang island, now known as Penang South Islands. Zairil was represented by Zharif Nizamuddin. Ravinder was represented by Shamsher Singh Thind and Khoo by Theiva Lingam.
