Toronto mother denied bail for attempted murder, after allegedly throwing son off balcony
A Toronto mother who allegedly threw her four-year-old son off a 10th-floor balcony from a downtown condominium building three weeks ago has been denied bail.
Sitting in a video booth at the Vanier Institute for Women, wearing a green prison sweatsuit, the woman, whose identity is covered by a publication ban to protect the identity of the child, put her head in her hands as Justice of the Peace Paul Yeung told the accused she would not be released.
The decision, which was read out in the Ontario Court of Justice on Monday, followed a lengthy special bail hearing over a number of days last week in which the defence proposed a plan for release.

On May 12th, around 10 p.m., police were called to a condo building on Front Street east of Spadina Avenue, after a child was located on the ground. Tenants told Global News that the child had been found in the bushes near the front entrance of the building. The child was taken to the Hospital for Sick Children with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The woman was charged with attempted murder, administering a noxious substance, namely tylenol and/or acetaminophen and alcohol, to endanger life, failing to provide the necessaries of life for a child under 16, and aggravated assault.
Court documents obtained by Global News find the woman, who turned 34 last week while in custody, had previously been charged with mischief and two counts of assault in relation to the child's father in August 2023. Those charges are still before the court.
The justice of the peace's reasons for denying bail to the woman are covered under a publication ban.
The woman returns to court later this month and has been ordered to have no contact with the child or the child's father while awaiting trial.

N.S. missing kids: RCMP ‘fully engaged' in finding out what happened to Lilly and Jack
RCMP in Nova Scotia said there are no new updates or information in the case of two missing children, whose mysterious disappearance has gripped the province for more than a month. Police declined an on-camera interview Monday, but said they were using 'all tools and resources' in the search for Lilly and Jack Sullivan from Pictou County. 'RCMP officers from various teams are fully engaged in finding out what happened to Lilly and Jack and we're using all tools and resources to determine the circumstances of their disappearance,' wrote spokesperson Cpl. Guillaume Tremblay. 'Any updates or new information will be provided as they're available.' The sister and brother — aged six and four — were reported missing on the morning of May 2 from their home on Gairloch Road in Lansdowne Station, which is about 30 kilometres from New Glasgow, N.S. On May 7, RCMP said during a news conference that the search was being 'scaled back.' 'We're not packing up and we're not giving up,' Staff Sgt. Curtis MacKinnon, district commander for Pictou County District RCMP, said at the news conference. On May 28, police confirmed the siblings were seen in public with family members the day before being reported missing, based on video footage and eyewitness accounts. The last organized search for the siblings took place over two days beginning June 1. Officials said at the time it was another 'targeted search' around the Gairloch Road area, as well as a nearby 'pipeline trail,' where a small boot print was previously found. Searchers didn't find anything and discussions were taking place on whether a future search was needed.

In a report published by digital weekly Air Mail on Saturday, nine women alleged that the Suicide Squad actor behaved inappropriately toward them and has a long-standing pattern of sexual misconduct. She claimed that the focus of the party appeared to be to get girls to skinny-dip in his pool. Leto's rep said 'there was never any recruiting, complaints or impropriety' and nightlife promoter Brent Bolthouse, who organized many parties at Leto's home, told Air Mail he 'never saw anyone skinny-dipping.'
