British tourist, 27, is arrested and extradited to Portugal two years after teenager was killed when he was stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle
A British holidaymaker has been arrested and extradited following a two-year police manhunt after a teenager was killed with a broken bottle in Lisbon.
The 27-year-old is set to be tried by Portuguese officials over the death of Daniel Galhanas after he was stabbed in the neck with the sharp glass object in the early hours of October 14 2023.
The tourist, who is yet to be named, was forced on a flight back to the country of the crime and remanded in custody after failed appeals against his return.
It is said the attack against the 19-year-old victim occurred in Lisbon's Bairro Alto neighbourhood.
Initial reports suggest he was targeted while trying to defend a friend who was part of a gang of thieves that tried to rob the suspected killer and his friends.
Stabbing victim Daniel Galhanas was first identified as one of the gang members who attacked the group, allegedly British tourists, in Lisbon, Portugal.
Family members have denied Daniel was involved with the gang and said he was only trying to help his friend.
According to the family, one of the tourists threw a bottle at Daniel's friend after the group was approached.
The bottle broke and the unnamed suspect picked up the smashed bottle, using it to slash at Daniel, who had come between the group and his friend.
Horrifying video shows the moment the male tourist launches a bottle at Daniel's friend before stabbing the victim, who then stumbles and collapses in a pool of blood in the street.
While the group of tourists are seen running away.
Daniel went into cardiac arrest and was taken alive to São José Hospital after being found by volunteer firefighters - but did not survive his injuries.
Video footage from above the street shows about a dozen people clashing in the road as cars pass at the intersection of Calçada do Combro and Largo do Calhariz.
Police say the gang targets foreign tourists on weekend evenings as they walk through the city after a night out.
Confirming the arrest and extradition, Portugal's police force said: 'The Policia Judiciaria, with the collaboration of the police and judicial authorities of the United Kingdom, located, arrested and extradited to Portugal a 27-year-old man who is strongly suspected of committing a first degree murder.
They added: 'The crime took place in the early hours of 14 October 2023, between 4am and 5am, following an altercation between two rival groups.
'The victim ended up being hit in the neck with a broken glass bottle, which caused serious injuries and led to his death on the spot.
'After the incident, both the suspect and the other members of his group fled the scene.
'Investigative work carried out by the PJ's Lisbon and Tagus Valley Directorate, which is leading the investigation, led to the identification of the suspected perpetrator and the issuing of an international arrest warrant.
'The suspect, a foreign national, was eventually located and arrested in the United Kingdom, where he travelled to the day after the murder.
'After being brought before judicial authorities in Portugal, he was remanded in pre-trial custody.'

EXCLUSIVE Moment Bridgerton actress has her phone robbed by prolific Algerian thief in Joe & the Juice - before star heroically fights back in front of stunned customers
This is the moment a Bridgerton actress had her phone robbed by a prolific Algerian thief in Joe & the Juice - before the star heroically fought back in front of stunned customers. MailOnline can reveal for the first time CCTV of Genevieve Chenneour, 27, bravely defending herself after Zacariah Boulares, 18, snuck up behind her and grabbed her phone in the upmarket coffee shop on Kensington High Street, west London, on February 8. Around 18 months earlier, Boulares had threatened to behead Aled Jones with a machete as he stole his £17,000 Rolex in Chiswick, west London. The thief, then 16, was locked up for his attack on the Welsh chorister in October 2023 but was released from youth detention early after serving just 14 months of his 24-month sentence. Boulares, who can now be named and pictured after turning 18, has gone on to commit a spate of crimes, including robbing rising star Ms Chenneour, who plays rumour-monger Clara Livingston in hit Netflix period drama Bridgerton. The thug's extensive criminal history - 12 previous convictions relating to 28 offences - was laid bare after he pleaded guilty on May 29 to stealing Ms Chenneour's phone and assaulting another customer, Carlo Kurcishi. In exclusive footage obtained by MailOnline, the actress can be seen courageously fighting back against the hooded thief who targeted her while she was out with a friend on a dog walk. Speaking of the moment she fought off the teenage thug, Ms Chenneour previously told the Mail: 'They didn't expect me to stand up for myself – but I did.' CCTV footage shows brave the moment Bridgerton actress, Genevieve Chenneour fought back against the thug In the CCTV, Boulares can be seen prowling around the back of the café, waiting for Ms Chenneour's friend to leave her alone at the table when he ordered before he pounces. The hooded thief, wearing all black with a navy cap, then swipes the phone while Ms Chenneour has her back turned, but she quickly leaps into action and takes down the thief with the help of her friend. The fearless Yorkshire-born actress puts her arm out to block the thief from leaving and dislodges the phone from his hand. Retrieving the iPhone from off the floor, she then uses the device to strike Boulares who is left helpless on the floor. The commotion continued as shocked onlookers began to form a crowd in the popular café in Kensington. The tussle can then be seen spilling into the back of the café, where Ms Chenneour, her friend and Boulares can only be seen in CCTV in glimpses via a mirror. After around four minutes of scuffling, the humbled crook then points his finger in the face of Ms Chenneour's friend before walking out of the café without the phone. The actress previously revealed: 'I was left with a concussion just before the Screen Actors Guild Awards and since then, I've felt constantly on edge. 'Even my dog was traumatised - now, if anyone touches me, he panics and tries to protect me. 'Getting a coffee shouldn't be something you need your wits about you for. She courageously stood up to the thief, hitting him with the phone as he tussled with a man on the floor during the ordeal 'I'm so grateful to the staff at Joe & The Juice – they were incredible during the incident and when I went back to see them after.' Boulares appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on May 29, where he pleaded guilty to stealing the phone and assaulting Mr Kurcishi. To the charge of stealing a mobile phone of a value unknown belonging to the Bridgerton actress, he shouted: 'Guilty'. He also admitted stealing a black leather hand bag from a diner at a pizza restaurant in London's West End on 30 January this year. The defendant has been remanded into custody with sentencing scheduled for June 17 at Isleworth Crown Court in west London. More than 70,000 phones were snatched in London in 2024, out of an estimated 100,000 thefts across the UK. Ms Chenneour is a former athlete who joined Team GB's artistic swimming team at the age of 15. She was awarded an Olympic scholarship before the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, but her sporting career was cut short by injury and she retrained as an actress. After appearing as a stunt double in the underwater sequences of period feature Gateway To The West, she landed her breakthrough role in the Regency drama. A source was previously quoted as saying: 'Genevieve showed real bravery throughout. It was a very shocking incident. 'It shows what is happening on London's streets on a daily basis. 'This was just another young woman going about her daily business. She's handled it brilliantly.' Genevieve Chenneour, pictured here at the premiere of Netflix's The Gentlemen at London's Theatre Royal Drury Lane in March last year, had her phone stolen in February this year Boulares went on to rob Ms Chenneour after being released from youth detention for the attack on chorister Mr Jones on July 7 2023. The Algerian national threatened Mr Jones with a 20-inch blade, demanding the 'f***king Rolex' on the singer's arm, while threatening to cut his limb off. Boulares could not be named at the time due to his age. After the terrified baritone gave the menacing youth his Dayton, Boulares later said he would 'cut [Jones's] head off' if the Songs of Praise star continued to follow him. The now 18-year-old appeared late to magistrates court late several times before he eventually pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of an offensive weapon at Wimbledon Youth Court. It was also heard the youngster had also stolen a £20,000 gold Rolex from a pensioner. His record was dubbed 'appalling' by Chairman of the bench Rex Da Roach. A Detention and Training Order (DTO) can be handed to teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17, where they serve half of their time in custody and are later supervised, by a Youth Offending Team. However after only 14 months the Algerian national was freed, and later went on to commit a spate of crimes, including at Joe & the Juice. A spokesman for the Met Police said: 'Police were called to a restaurant on Kensington High Street on Saturday, 8 February following reports of a theft and an assault. 'CCTV showed the suspect stealing a phone from the table and then assaulting a separate member of the public who confronted him. 'The victim of the assault was kicked and punched before the suspect left the premises. 'CCTV enquiries identified Zacariah Boulares as the suspect and he was arrested.

Family of tragic Scots dad savagely murdered by ‘cold-blooded' best pal say he should never be freed
THE family of a murdered dad have told of their horror at him being killed by a childhood pal who considered himself a 'cousin'. Relatives of Chris McMahon, 31, found it 'unbelievable' that Stephen Kelly stabbed him in the neck and chest with an 18-inch hunting knife. 5 5 5 He also hit Chris on the head with a bottle, stamped on him and poured bleach into his mouth during a 'sustained' 20-minute attack. Chris's devastated mum, Margaret, 69, said: 'Never in a million years did I think Stephen would have done this to Chris. 'He would come to our house all the time. He was always here having his dinner as a wee boy.' Kelly claimed he killed Chris in the dad-of-two's home in Carluke, Lanarkshire, because he was being 'bullied' by him. But the dead man's older brother John, 37, said: 'He's a coward. He's hit Chris with a bottle to knock him out, then sat on top of him and stabbed him, then poured the bleach. 'That's not someone who has snapped because they were bullied. He's a cold-blooded killer.' Sister Kirsty, 41, said: 'There's two little kids here who will never see their daddy again.' Mum Margaret told how Kelly's mother knocked on her door after the brute called her, topless and covered in blood, to tell her what he had done. She said: 'She told me, 'You better call for help'. 'After I found out I couldn't believe she hadn't told me what happened. But then, maybe she couldn't say it.' Stabbing rampage leaves 11 people injured as witnesses describe horror of 'screams & blood everywhere' in Salem Kelly, of Carluke, was caged for 22 years at the High Court in Kilmarnock on May 28. Following the sentence Chris' parents Margaret, 69, and John 76, along with siblings Kirsty, 41 and John, 37, said they were relieved Kelly had been given life. Kirsty added: "It's been an agonising 19 months for our family, and justice has finally been served. But no sentence would ever be long enough because Chris is never coming back." 5 5

Inside Austrian school massacre: Students rang parents to say they were going to die while others pretended they were dead as 'bullied' ex-student fired 'in a circle' in classrooms, slaughtering 10 people
A 'bullied' drop-out pupil turned an Austrian school into a bloodbath yesterday as he massacred ten innocents in a gun rampage. More than a dozen others were wounded as shots and screams rang out when the 21-year-old stormed into his old classroom blasting a shotgun and a pistol which he legally owned. In the country's worst mass school shooting, terror-stricken pupils pretended to be dead as they cowered in corridors and two classrooms or ran for their lives. Chilling video captured the sound of shots followed by screams as the gunman picked off his victims at the Dreierschuetzengasse high school in Austria's second largest city, Graz. Pupils and teachers were said to be among the dead. Six female and three male victims died quickly, with one adult said to be among them. The tenth victim, a woman, succumbed to her injuries in hospital last night. The former pupil – named locally as 'Artur A' – ended his deadly rampage when he turned a gun on himself in a toilet cubicle. Police later found a suicide note at his home nearby, which said he had 'felt bullied' at the school, according to Austria's Krone Zeitung newspaper, although authorities said only that he was an ex-pupil who had quit before completing his studies. It was also reported that a 'farewell video' was discovered, adding to the idea that Artur A may have meticulously planned his atrocity. Detectives are scouring data on his mobile phone and computers to build a picture of his recent movements and search for clues as to his motivation. Austria was plunged into a state of shock, with Chancellor Christian Stocker flying to Graz and declaring a 'dark day in the history of our country' as he announced three days of national mourning. More than 300 police and special forces descended on the school after 'screams and gunshots' were heard by emergency service workers during frantic calls at 10am local time. Armed Cobra police commandos charged into the four-storey building as part of an emergency response that included 65 ambulances, at least two air ambulances and 158 paramedics. Terrified pupils filmed themselves as gunshots rang out, and later as they fled down corridors as armed officers helped evacuate them from the 400-pupil school. Two schoolgirls were shown clinging on to each other as they ran from the school building. One teacher described being barricaded inside a classroom with pupils as they heard the gunshots. A distressing video showed victims lined up on stretchers outside of the school while dozens of paramedics tended to them. Some were covered by white sheets. Helicopter ambulances airlifted the most severely injured straight to Graz Regional Hospital. Desperate parents raced to the school as word of the massacre spread, with police reuniting them with evacuated survivors at a local hall. One father told how his son had survived by pretending to be dead. The man, named as Farag, told television channel Puls 24: 'Out of fear, he lay down to pretend that he was killed so that he wouldn't be targeted any more.' He added: 'Who did this? What kind of problem did he have?' One mother said: 'My son called me to say he was in school and that he was being shot at, and that he thinks he is going to die. I've only found out now, two hours later, that he's still alive.' Metin Ozden, who was in his kebab restaurant near the school, said: 'I've never seen so many emergency services in my entire life.' He said parents passing his restaurant were crying as they rushed to the school. Police commander Franz Ruff said 'at least' a dozen people had been injured in addition to those killed. Krone Zeitung newspaper previously reported that 28 people were taken to hospital, with at least two of them in an 'extremely critical condition'. Seven required emergency surgery. Some victims had reportedly been shot in the head. The numbers have not been officially verified. Police confirmed the killer had legally owned the weapons, with the Salzburger Nachrichten newspaper reporting he had purchased one of the guns just days ago. Attacks in public are rare in the nation of almost 9.2 million people, which ranks among the ten safest countries in the world, according to the Global Peace Index. Last night the country's Chancellor said: 'A school... is a space of trust, of security, of the future. The fact that this safe space was shattered by such an act of violence leaves us speechless.' Austria's foreign minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger said: 'As a mother of three children, my heart is breaking.' The local state governor Mario Kunasek said 'the green heart of Austria is crying', while president Alexander van der Bellen said: 'This horror cannot be captured in words.' Leaders from across Europe sent their condolences including Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky who said he was 'deeply saddened'. French education minister Elisabeth Borne said that one of those who died was a 'young fellow citizen' of France. At a news conference earlier in the day, Austria's interior minister Gerhard Karner refused to be drawn on 'speculation' in the case, saying it was the job of the criminal office to investigate. Police did confirm the killer was not 'known' to authorities before the attack. Last night Graz Cathedral held a service of reflection and the city's main square became a 'sea of lights' as candles were lit for the victims. In a nearby parish church, prayers were said for victims including one called Leo. 'We are lighting a light for Leo,' said Father Pesendorfer, who was in tears. Today, a nationwide minute's silence will be held at 10am local time. Flags on the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, where the president has his office, will fly at half mast. Yesterday afternoon long queues formed outside a blood donation centre in Graz. Johanna, 30, said: 'I'm here because I wanted to do something. I felt helpless.' Austria has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in Europe, with roughly 370,000 Austrians legally owning 1.5 million registered firearms, according to the interior ministry. Wild hunting is popular in the country and more than half of Austria's registered firearms fall under the category of weapons that can be owned by any adult without a licence.
