Mamata Banerjee holds meet on COVID preparedness, says there is no reason to panic
Amid spike in COVID-19 cases, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a meeting on preparedness of the State on Monday (June 9, 2025).
While stressing that there was nothing to panic about, the Chief Minister asked authorities to keep infrastructure updated to ensure immediate response in case of emergencies.
West Bengal reported 747 active cases, among the highest in the country at the moment. Ms. Banerjee has taken note of the situation and asked officials to maintain vigilance.
'Whoever is responsible for handling this disease, including rural and urban healthcare workers, corporation, health department, police, we called everyone and did a COVID preparedness meeting,' Ms. Banerjee said.
'Do not cause panic, but we need to stay alert, in case there is any abnormal spike, we will stay prepared. People who have co-morbidities need to take more care and seek medical help,' Ms. Banerjee, who also heads the Health Ministry in the State, added.
The Chief Minister also urged people to visit government hospitals to treat COVID-19 so that no one incurs extra expenses. She said that medical needs of affected persons will be taken care of at public health facilities.
Similar sentiments were echoed by medical professionals from the State.

Nonetheless, the importance of basic preventive measures cannot be overstated.'

JSR pvt labs must share reports with govt, says civil surgeon
Jamshedpur: The East Singhbhum civil surgeon issued directives to all private pathological laboratories operating in the district to table the clinical test reports of patients on a daily basis with the local office of the health department. Civil surgeon Dr Sahir Pal, "It has been observed for quite some time now that the private laboratories are not sharing any information with the govt. Keeping in view the rising cases of Covid-19 cases across the country, including Jharkhand, it is necessary that private clinics must share their daily test reports with the medical department." There are around 500 big and small pathological laboratories, besides the govt hospitals and health centres, in the district. Terming the move as a vital step to fight the disease, Dr Pal said, "If govt is unaware of the exact data from private laboratories, how can we formulate a plan of action against the contagious disease." "Moreover, diseases like malaria, dengue, and Japanese encephalitis are reported during summer. Testing is vital to curb the spread of these diseases. If the govt is unaware of the number and location of patients detected in tests conducted at private laboratories, how can we take action to control it? All the laboratories across the district have been told to share data of test reports. Else, they would face strict action, including cancellation of licences," he added. Welcoming the order as a necessary step towards maintaining transparency in the health sector, Dr Anurag Biswas said, "How can govt take steps if a large section of the health sector, which is operated by private players keep their test reports under wraps? All private laboratories must send a copy of their reports to the govt at the end of the day without fail so that the department officials are aware of all relevant data in a particular geographical area. "

No immediate Covid-related curbs on Rath Yatra: Health min
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Amid a fresh surge in Covid cases across the country, the state govt on Monday indicated that the upcoming Rath Yatra on June 27 in Puri, expected to attract lakhs of devotees, faces no immediate restriction on public participation. After a high-level Rath Yatra preparatory meeting in Puri, health minister Mukesh Mahaling said authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will follow the central govt's protocols as required. Mahaling assured that the govt is well-prepared for the grand festival. "We are continuously monitoring the Covid situation and as of now, there are no alarming indicators that would affect Rath Yatra celebrations. There is no need to panic," Mahaling said, adding that the latest Covid sub-variants are 'weak'. The announcement came as a relief to devotees after the grand festival was conducted without public participation in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. According to the minister, Covid situation is under control in Odisha. The state has so far recorded 49 Covid cases in the latest wave with the count of active cases currently at 37. "We will strictly follow any protocols advised by the central govt. The safety of devotees remains our top priority. We urge devotees to take basic health precautions during the festival," Mahaling said, adding that people with underlying health issues should stay away from crowded places. He further said, "Our preparation involves comprehensive healthcare facilities and emergency response systems for devotees. At least 300 doctors will be on stand-by in Puri from Rath Yatra on June 27 to Bahuda Yatra on July 5. Adequate number of temporary ICUs and heatstroke wards will be set up at the Puri district headquarters hospital." Local health officials have confirmed that medical teams will be stationed along the Grand Road where the chariot procession takes place. "We will have multiple medical kiosks, ambulances and healthcare professionals ready to address any emergencies," the minister said. Law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said that about 80% of Rath Yatra preparations is complete, expressing hope that the remaining work will be finished before the festival. He said that the progress of the work is being reviewed by ministers of departments concerned. "We are hopeful that the Lord's blessings and coordination of all departments, servitors and Puri locals will result in an incident-free Rath Yatra," the law minister said.

Mamata advises people not to panic over Covid-19
Kolkata, June 9 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said there was no immediate concern about Covid-19 and advised people not to panic. She said if anyone has any problem, like a cold, fever, or cough, then they should visit the government hospitals to clear their doubts. Addressing the media at Nabanna, the state secretariat, the Chief Minister said they had a meeting with the health officials to assess the situation arising out of reports of the return of Covid-19 elsewhere in the country. She said there was no need to panic. "We had a meeting to take stock of the situation in the government health sector, given reports of Covid-19 elsewhere, and we came to the conclusion that there is no need to panic on the issue," Banerjee told reporters. She said if anyone has any doubt, he or she could visit government hospitals to avoid unnecessary expenditure, as the hospitals have all the necessary infrastructure to provide adequate services. She said India reported only 4 to 5 thousand cases so far in a country with 140 crore people, and the WHO declared it endemic and not a pandemic. A separate report on Monday said the total number of active Covid cases in India touched 6,491 as 358 fresh cases of the virus were reported in the last 24 hours in the country, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
