Springboks unfazed by rain forecast for Barbarians game
This Saturday's match in Cape Town marks the first encounter between the Springboks and Barbarians since 2016, and it's the first time ever the teams will cross paths on South African soil.
Unfortunately, a strong cold front is expected to hit Cape Town from Wednesday, bringing plenty of rain with it this week.
Heavy cloud cover and some persistent rainfall is also forecast for most of Saturday, and so perhaps the expectation for free-flowing attacking rugby will need to be watered down to some degree.
With that weather forecast in mind for Saturday, Springbok attack coach Tony Brown said although it could influence the match, he was comfortable that the Springboks would be able to cope.
'It's obviously tougher playing attacking rugby in the rain, but we are an adaptable team,' said Brown. 'It might be tougher for the Barbarians given their style of play, but we feel we know what is expected of our players.'
Zoning in on what they expected from the Barbarians, Brown said: 'They are renowned for their attacking rugby, and they are very unpredictable, so we have to be prepared for that and prepare as well as possible for the match.'
The Springboks are expected to select a strong backline, which will also include X-factor superstar Cheslin Kolbe.
'I haven't played against them, but from what I've seen, they are a good team with a lot of experienced players, so it will be important for us to stay calm and prepare as well as we can,' said Kolbe.
'It's great to be back. We haven't seen each other in six or seven months, so it was exciting to assemble as a group again. And then being in Cape Town is a home away from home for me, so it's always great playing in the Mother City.'
The Springboks will continue their preparations on Tuesday and Wednesday, and will have Thursday off to rest and recuperate, before wrapping up their on-field preparations for the match on Friday with their captains' run.
The match kicks off at 17:10 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport.

Will Springboks don unpopular Pick n Pay kit for 2025 test series?
The Springboks test series is just days away from kicking off. But will the thrice-winning World Champions be wearing new jerseys, courtesy of sponsors Pick n Pay? In recent weeks, the yellow and green training kits have been a hard pass for many rugby fans. Like the aqua-jade 'Checkers Sixty60' alternative kit, which was introduced during the 2023 World Cup, supporters have voiced their disapproval of the design. In March, the Blitzboks debuted their new look, which featured the retailer's large logo on the back. On social media, many South Africans, including rugby experts, have given the Springboks 'Pick n Pay kit' a thumbs down. The national rugby team were seen wearing the yellow and green jerseys as part of their training kits following two alignment camps in Cape Town this year. Speaking to The South African, SA Rugby's Commercial General Manager Andy Colquhoun confirmed that Springboks replica jerseys and training kits would go on sale this week, ahead of the test series season. The jerseys would not feature the Pick n Pay logo, as was anticipated, as the signing of the new sponsor was too late to incorporate into production. Images of new jerseys – different from last year's – would be released on Tuesday, 24 June, and would go on sale the next day. Replica jerseys featuring Pick n Pay's logo will be released to the public in 2026. Earlier this year, SA Rugby announced that Pick n Pay had signed a four-year contract as a Tier 1 sponsor. The sponsor's logo is featured on all Springboks match-day jerseys and on the front of all training apparel. The retailer replaces MTN, which previously sponsored the Boks from 2017 up until last year. The brand's name will feature on the back of the jersey in gold above the position number and player name. According to reports, the significant move will cost the supermarket group around R70 million per year. In March, the Blitzboks sported the new kit for their game against Uruguay. The Springboks will play a friendly against the Barbarians at Cape Town's DHL Stadium on Saturday, 28 June. Home games include the following dates… Castle Lager Incoming Series 5 July: South Africa vs Italy, Loftus Versfeld (Pretoria) 12 July: South Africa vs Italy, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium (Gqeberha) 19 July: South Africa vs Georgia, Mbombela Stadium (Nelspruit) Castle Lager Rugby Championship 16 August: South Africa vs Australia, Emirates Airline Park (Johannesburg) 23 August: South Africa vs Australia, DHL Stadium (Cape Town) 27 September: South Africa vs Argentina, Hollywoodbets Kings Park (Durban) The Springboks will also play these away games. 6 September: South Africa vs New Zealand, Auckland (Eden Park) 13 September: South Africa vs New Zealand, Wellington (Sky Stadium) 4 October: South Africa vs Argentina, London (Twickenham) 8 November: South Africa vs France, Paris (Stade de France) 15 November: South Africa vs Italy, Turin (Allianz Stadium) 22 November: South Africa vs Ireland, Dublin (Aviva Stadium) 29 November: South Africa vs Wales, Cardiff (Principality Stadium) Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 . Dam levels in the Western Cape RISE as heavy rain lashes the province
The latest official dam level stats for the Western Cape show that cumulatively the six major dams in the province are back above 65% of capacity – and are continuing to rise as winter rain falls. The six major dams in the Western Cape – the Berg River, Steenbras Lower, Steenberg Upper, Theewaterskloof, Voelvlei and Wemmershoek – have all seen dramatic increases as rain lashed the province in recent weeks. And the good news is that a near week of heavy rain is forecast as the latest cold front hits the Western Cape. The City of Cape Town uploaded its latest stats on Monday, 23 June. The latest figures show the six dams are a combined 65.1% of total storage. That's up from the 64.5% last week. The current levels are down on the same period a year ago when the combined percentage stood at 68.3%. Theewaterskloof, which accounts for more than 50% of the Western Cape's total dam capacity (480 188 MI of a total of 898 221 MI) is at 63.4% of capacity, while the next biggest dam, Voëlvlei (164 095 MI), is at 61.1%. Western Cape residents need no reminding of life during the 'Day Zero' water crisis from mid-2017 to mid-2018. Finally, Vaal will be represented in the top flight football
SEDIBENG.- At last, the Vaal will have a representative in the top-flight football as part of the ABC Motsepe League. This was after Young Pirates FC were promoted to the second division of South African football, the ABC Motsepe League, for the 2025/2026 season. Pirates FC was crowned the Gauteng Champions after their overall performance at the Inter-Regional Promotion Play-offs held in Pretoria over the weekend. The latter represented the Vaal in this promotional play-offs after being crowned the SAFA Sedibeng Hollywood Men's Regional League for the 2024/2025 season. Back to the Inter-Regional Play-offs, Pirates FC was unbeaten in all their games, which made them the Gauteng Champions. This is great news for Vaal football after a long time. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport after the play-offs, SAFA Deputy President Velaphi Motsepe was overwhelmed with joy as he made bold predictions that Pirates FC would gain promotion to the ABC Motsepe League. 'As SAFA Sedibeng, we want to take this opportunity to congratulate Young Pirates on their achievement. This is something to celebrate, as this league was declared null and void for the past two seasons. I am happy that our league was declared the best in Gauteng, regardless of our challenges in previous years. As SAFA Sedibeng, we give Young Pirates FC our support as much as we can to sustain their ABC Motsepe League status. I do not doubt that the club is in this league to compete, not to add numbers,' said Motsepe. Sedibeng Ster Sport attempted to get hold of the club's chairperson, but was unsuccessful as he was out of the country at the time.
