What happened to football's most notorious Noughties lothario Lee Sharpe after he broke hearts on Love Island and cheated on Abi Titmuss
It was Jayne Middlemiss who famously claimed she'd 'never felt like this about anyone before' after falling for former footballer Lee Sharpe on Celebrity Love Island.
Middlemiss would win the 2005 show - an early prototype for the Love Island we're all too familiar with - but she would do it without Sharpe, who ultimately dumped her in favour of fellow contestant Abi Titmuss.
'I'll always be grateful to you for binning me off on national TV,' the tearful presenter had told him before scooping the prize money alongside Irish club owner Fran Cosgrove, unaware that she may well have had a lucky escape.
Indeed, his short-lived romance with Titmuss would eventually end in tears - and allegations of feckless behaviour after Sharpe was accused of cheating on the former nurse.
But as bitter and acrimonious as that would prove to be, Sharpe's alleged antics with Titmuss following their brief stay in Fiji were mere brushstrokes in a bigger picture, the origins of which can be traced back to the rather less glamorous Manchester.
A talented footballer who initially made his mark with Torquay United, Sharpe's ball-playing abilities were soon acknowledged by Sir Alex Ferguson, who signed the then 17-year old midfielder for Manchester United in 1988.
It would be the catalyst for a series of life-changing moments, both on and off the pitch, with the footballer playing a significant role in United's early-90s resurgence and eventual domination of Premier League football.
Blessed with photogenic good looks and possessed with a sense of style previously lacking in elite sportsmen, Sharpe also spearheaded the rise of the 'celebrity' footballer at a time when David Beckham was still polishing boots and dramatically escalating salaries were giving players the opportunity to live like the proverbial king.
But Sharpe later admitted his weakness for the ladies led to him getting the notorious 'hairdryer treatment' from a furious Ferguson.
He told The Sun: 'I found a house in Whitefield and moved my girlfriend up from Birmingham and everything was great. But then I hit a little bit of form that wasn't quite up to the manager's standards.
'We were at Anfield getting beat at half-time, and he gave me the biggest rollicking of my life and told me to sell my house, move my girlfriend back home and told me to get out there and play!'
He added: 'It's probably the worst place to go if you're not having a good game and not full of confidence.
'I had a nightmare, so he brought me off with about 20 minutes to go. I got back, sold the house, sold the car, and told my girlfriend to go back to Birmingham and that was me!
'He asked me now and then after that if I had a girlfriend or if I was married but I always told him that I'd got rid of my girlfriend, wasn't getting married and not to ask me again! That was the biggest run-in I had with him!'
After winning three Premier League titles during a trophy-laden eight years with Manchester United, Sharpe would see out his career with Bradford City and Leeds United before hanging up his boots for good in 2004.
Little more than a year later, the newly retired footballer would successfully woo Middlemiss in Fiji, before leaving her for Titmuss - an episode that would cement his reputation as a love rat.
His public image suffered further damage after he was accused of romping with shop promotions worker Kathryn Shaw in the back of his car, on his way to meet Titmuss at the 2005 V Festival.
Shaw told The Mirror at the time: 'We've got a little halfway point in-between where he lives and where I live. It's just off the M62 in between Leeds and Manchester.
'We come off the motorway and there's a little bridge near Rochdale so we just abandon a car and go for a drive in his.
'Maybe we stop off for a drink in a pub and do... whatever. It's really nice, it's not really mucky or horrible. We meet up whenever. It depends where he is and what he's doing. We keep in touch all the time.
'We do a lot of texting. I've got about 40 texts on my phone from him at the moment. And I wouldn't be surprised if he's texted other women too.'
In one text, allegedly sent before he romped with Shaw in a lay-by, Sharpe writes: 'I would babe but only here for one night. Go to V Festival tomorrow. halfway in the car could be nice for old times.'
The following day he allegedly texted the shop worker while partying with his girlfriend at the Chelmsford event, writing: 'It was very horny babe, must do it more often and soon.'
In her book, Titmuss described the moment she found out about the betrayal when she received a flurry of text messages from friends and relatives asking if she was OK, including ex-boyfriends John Leslie and David Walliams.
'I feel like I'm being physically torn in half,' she said. 'I have my boyfriend looking me straight in the eye, telling me he loves me and totally denying it. And in my hand I have the front page of a national paper with a woman looked out at me swearing he has slept with her.
'He just kept telling me it wasn't true. My whole world is torn apart.'
Their relationship limped on in an on-off fashion into the following year, but she was unable to trust him and he was unhappy with her penchant for partying.
When they finally split, she described how she 'blamed herself', saying: 'If only I had been thinner, prettier, smarter, more together, drank less, been a better girlfriend.'
Elsewhere, former Big Brother contestant Lisa Jeynes claimed she enjoyed a 'marathon sex session' with Sharpe after the pair spent months texting each other.
'We had a marathon sex session that went on for hours. He satisfied me in every way,' she told People in 2013. 'Afterwards he was very cuddly and we curled up like spoons. I thought he really cared for me.'
But she says the retired footballer left her heartbroken after choosing to break off their romance and rekindle his relationship with Titmuss.
She said: 'I was devastated. He never mentioned Abi when he was with me and looked uncomfortable if I asked him about her. Now I know why.'
'I couldn't believe that he didn't have the decency to just tell me. I think he should have been more of a man about it and admitted that he was trying to have a go with Abi.'
After subsequent romances with actress Kym Marsh and Michelle Heaton, Sharpe eventually found lasting love with Lucy Gardner in 2011.
Six years later, Sharpe proposed in front of more the 250 guests while they attended a Pied Piper fundraiser at Cheltenham Races in 2017.
'It was absolutely wonderful to witness,' Pied Piper board member Cathryn Hage told Gloucestershire Live.
'We filled the marquee with friends and supporters of the charity, and raised around £15,000 as a result.
'It was so nice because we had a great day, the weather was beautiful and then Lee proposed. It was very special and everyone wished the couple well. It was a real buzz in the tent.'
Two years later the couple exchanged vows on the Amalfi Coast and now live in Spain, where they raise three children.
It's quite a turnaround for the former footballer, whose peaceful life on the Spanish coast has enabled him to build on his love of golf in the hope of turning pro.
'I've always loved golf. I started playing when I got to United when I was 17, so I was a bit of a late starter,' he told the Express in 2023.
'But I always loved it, and I had a mate who was a golf pro on the European Tour at the same time I was trying to get my handicap down as an amateur to scratch.
He added: 'The idea was that I was going to try and qualify for the British Open as an amateur, and he was going to try and qualify as a pro. Move on a few years down the line, and I turned pro in the UK.
'Over here in Spain, it's a bit of a different regime, and I've got to go down a different route to do it. That's what I'm trying to do at the moment: turn pro in Spain.'

Snoop Dogg plans to open burger truck at iconic UK football stadium - and even wants to serve fans himself
Snoop Dogg plans to open a burger truck at an iconic UK football stadium. American rapper, 53, real name Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr, has taken an interest in Celtic Park - the home of Scottish Premiership team Celtic, in the Parkhead area of Glasgow. World away from his California roots - Snoop has spoken in the past of his love for the team saying he was inspired by Ryan Reynolds' transformation of Wrexham. He has told The Sunday Mail: 'I would love to bring a pop-up burger [van] to a sports stadium to show fans that food at stadiums can be good. 'It's got to be Celtic Park, man. The secret to a good burger is the love in the preparation. The ground beef has got to be mixed with some secret spices, then add a good quality cheese and some maple-cured bacon. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'The Celtic fans are gonna love it, and to make sure they are just right, Snoop is going to be serving them himself.' He cheekily added: 'Am I going to bring my burgers to Rangers as well? Nah, I think we will give that a miss.' He also claims to have spoken to famous chef Gordon Ramsay about the possible business opportunity. Last October Snoop revealed his plans to invest in Celtic, taking inspiration from Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The Hollywood duo took over Welsh side Wrexham for just short of £2million in November 2020, when they were in the fifth tier of English football and had been for nearly 15 years. But they earned promotion to League Two two seasons later in winning the National League, and they secured a consecutive promotion the year after to take their spots in League One. And it seems the club's owners' work is rubbing off on millionaire rapper Snoop Dogg. Speaking to the Daily Record, the 53-year-old, real name Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr, has outlined his desire to become involved with sport, and in particular Celtic. 'I love what Ryan has done with Wrexham,' he said. 'It's just a great story. 'Investing in a sports team has been something I have been looking at for a long time. 'If the chance came to invest in Celtic, I would be crazy not to take a look at it. 'I have watched so much soccer in Europe but I have never seen fans like the Celtic fans. There is something so special about them. 'There is a reason why their fans are talked about across Europe. The best players and coaches in the world tell you there is nowhere like Celtic Park and I want to be a part of that. 'Their mascot is a hound. You couldn't make that up. Snoop Dogg becomes Hoopy the Hound – that's gotta be a match made in heaven. The headlines write themselves.' Snoop has been pictured in a Celtic shirt in the past, also saying the club are 'his boys' in a previous interview.

ANDREW PIERCE: Celebrate Mrs T! Just what would grumpy Ted say?
The feud between Ted Heath and Margaret Thatcher, who ousted him as Tory leader, was one of the most long-running and rancorous in politics. So what a nice surprise to learn that the Sir Edward Heath Charitable Foundation, set up to promote his memory, is to honour the Iron Lady. Next month they will mark the centenary of her birth with a tribute at the Sarah Thorne Theatre in Broadstairs, the genteel seaside resort in Kent where Heath was born in 1925. There will be a discussion chaired by Iain Dale, who has written a new biography of her. The panel on July 20 includes John Redwood, who ran Mrs T's Downing Street policy unit, Virginia Bottomley, who served in her government, and veteran MP Roger Gale, who – as a former TV producer – advised the Iron Lady on how to conduct herself when parliament was televised in 1989. Steve Nallon, the voice of Maggie for Spitting Image, will also be on the panel. Michael MacManus, who worked for Heath and Thatcher, said: 'I don't think my fellow trustees ever expected to stage an event celebrating Mrs T, but I think it's a great departure.' Truss could make a dram out of a crisis Much mockery of 49-day PM Liz Truss after she promoted an Irish whiskey brand alongside bare-knuckle fighter Dougie Joyce, once jailed for punching a pensioner. Sir Roderic Lyne, our former ambassador to Russia, suggests Truss might follow the example of Alec Douglas-Home after his 14 months in No 10: 'Perhaps she could take up salmon fishing like Douglas-Home. It goes down very well with a wee dram.' What a bunch of heels Labour MPs were cock-a-hoop after Prime Minister's Questions last week amid suggestions they had discovered Kemi Badenoch's 'Achilles heel'. They claimed they could see the Tory leader had forgotten to remove a 'bargain sale' label from the sole of one her shoes. Quipped one Labourite: 'She must know she's on the way out and will soon lose that nice extra salary as Opposition leader. She's already cutting back on essentials!' But is this yet another Labour dirty trick? The Tory leader's office certainly thinks so. The footwear was from M&S, said a source. And there was no such 'bargain' tag upon them. Flushed with Labour's surprise success in last week's Scottish Parliament by-election, party insiders know who to thank for victory over the SNP. 'Virtually every Labour MP came up to campaign in Hamilton. The only one who didn't was Keir Starmer – so it definitely was Keir 'wot won it',' sniped one. Labour historians noted that the Govan shipyard, where Starmer outlined his defence strategy last week, was earmarked for closure by the Heath Tory government in 1971. It was saved after a 'work-in' organised by Communist union leaders Jimmy Airlie and Jimmy Reid. Lefty Labour MPs grumble that the massive expansion in defence spending, which will benefit the Govan yard, will be paid for by trimming benefits – the sort of cuts those Communist diehards would have fought to resist. Labour MP Markus Campbell-Savours may now sport a Trotskyite beard, but he wants reform of the House of Lords to be delayed. Young Markus should perhaps have declared a family interest. His father Dale, a former Labour MP, is now a life peer. The status quo suits the Campbell-Savours family just fine. Meanwhile, peers are feathering their nests. Last week they increased their hotel expenses allowance from £103 to £125 a night. That's well above the rate of inflation.

Nick Frost reveals he's been targeted by trans activists as he prepares to work with JK Rowling after accepting role of Hagrid in HBO's Harry Potter series
Nick Frost has revealed he has been targeted by trans activists after accepting the role of Hagrid in the new HBO Harry Potter series. The actor, 53, will star as the legendary Hogwarts groundskeeper in the much-anticipated show, which is set to begin filming this summer. However after sharing the exciting announcement on Instagram, Nick revealed he was forced to turn off the comments on the post due to being swamped with criticism for collaborating with JK Rowling. The famous author, who is also serving as an executive producer of the new series, has become a vocal presence in the transgender debate. Distancing himself from Rowling's trans views, Nick told the Observer: 'She's allowed her opinion and I'm allowed mine. They just don't align in any way, shape of form.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Rowling has been vocal on the subject of trans people for several years; in 2018, a spokesperson explained that her 'like' of a tweet calling trans women 'men in dresses' had been a 'middle-aged moment'. And following the Supreme Court judgement on April 17, Rowling has consistently referred to transgender women as being 'men'. Despite turning off interaction with fans, the publication asked Nick if he believes the debate may overshadow the new series. He added: ' I don't know but maybe it shouldn't blow over? We shouldn't just hope it will go away because if makes it easier maybe we should educate ourselves.' In his announcement post, the actor posed with a classic copy of the first book in JK Rowling's series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. He is set to play the role that was made famous by veteran actor Robbie Coltrane in the original film series, before his death in 2022. Nick captioned his post: 'You're a wizard, Harry!!! 'Thank you for trusting me with such a loyal, gentle and courageous half-giant like Rubeus Hagrid. Robbie, I promise I won't let you down.' Elsewhere, critics of the Harry Potter author criticised her role as an executive producer on the show because of her views on transgender issues. HBO chiefs later defended her role, saying Rowling had a 'right to express her personal views'. In a move that's sent shockwaves of excitement across the fandom, Hollywood heavyweight John Lithgow has been announced as the new Albus Dumbledore. Janet McTeer, known for her powerhouse performances on stage and screen, will step into the sharp heels of Professor McGonagall, while rising star Paapa Essiedu takes on the darker, more complicated role of Severus Snape – a part made famous by the late Alan Rickman. The casting, which was officially announced earlier this month, forms part of HBO's hotly anticipated reboot of J.K. Rowling 's seven-book series – a full-scale, decade-long adaptation that promises to stick far more closely to the original storylines than the blockbuster films. Fans say this could be the most exciting reboot yet, with many calling the casting 'perfectly magical' and praising the diverse, inclusive approach taken by producers. Showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner said: 'We are happy to announce the casting of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse to play Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell and Filch.' Executive producer and director Mark Mylod added: 'We're delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can't wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.' The new series is aims to 'lead a new generation of fandom' and hopes to recapture the beloved details Harry Potter fans have enjoyed for 25 years. It will be executive produced by Harry Potter author JK Rowling, Ruth Kenley-Letts, Neil Blair and David Heyman. Back in 2023, the Mail's Alison Boshoff revealed how Rowling would personally approve all of the key castings in the forthcoming series. The author previously said: 'Max's commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me. 'And I'm looking forward to being part of this new adaptation, which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series.'
