After starting the game at Manchester City as the Leicester captain, Jamie Vardy looked less than impressed as he took his seat at the back of the dugout after being replaced at half-time by midfielder Oliver Skipp.
And the response from Foxes fans on social media to the removal of a striker in favour of a defensive midfielder at 2-0 down was predictably negative.
Yet, like many decisions Ruud van Nistelrooy has made since replacing Steve Cooper as manager part way through the season, it was akin to shuffling deckchairs on the Titanic.
Deep in the second half, it seemed a moral victory when the visitors got numbers into the home side's box and the ball bounced in the six-yard area, but it was easily dealt with.
The nearest Leicester came to ending their wait for a goal came early in the opening period, when they were already behind, as Bilal El Khannouss attempted a curling effort from just outside the penalty area. For a brief moment it looked as though it might go in, but it did not bend enough and drifted wide.
Manchester City have now recorded seven straight league wins against Leicester, so the Foxes do not need to be as bad as they were here for Pep Guardiola's side to beat them.
But while there is over a fifth of the campaign to go and, mathematically, nothing is certain, it is impossible to see how this miserable season can end in anything other than relegation, which could easily be confirmed before April is at an end.

Premier League champions Liverpool have completed the £100million club-record signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. The deal for the 22-year-old Germany international could potentially become a British record as there are £16m of add-ons included, which would surpass the existing mark of £115m which Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo in 2023. Manchester City, England goalkeeper Khiara Keating has class C possession charges dropped
Manchester City and England goalkeeper Khiara Keating has had the charges of possession of the Class C drug nitrous oxide against her dropped. The crown prosecution service (CPS) confirmed to The Athletic the case against Keating and her mother Nicola has been discontinued as there was not enough evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction. Advertisement Keating told the BBC: 'I'm relieved the charges have been dropped. As I've always said, I did nothing wrong. 'It's been a difficult time, but I've always known the truth. Now I'm just looking forward to focusing fully on the Euros and spending time with my family.' Keating, 20, and her mother Nicola, 49, had been charged with possessing a class C controlled drug on June 18, 2024. The charges related to an alleged incident on Queens Road in Manchester. They both appeared in court on July 23 and were granted unconditional bail. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, became classified as a Class C drug and possession was made illegal by the UK government in November 2023. Keating will be part of England's squad at the 2025 European Championship after being selected by Sarina Wiegman as one of three goalkeepers alongside Hannah Hampton and Anna Moorhouse. She was called up to the national side for the first time in October 2023 but is yet to make her senior debut. The City academy graduate made 12 Women's Super League (WSL) appearances last season, having enjoyed a breakthrough 2023-24 campaign. She won the league's Golden Glove award after establishing herself as City's first-choice goalkeeper, keeping nine clean sheets.
