The annual free Tacoma Pride celebration will take place in Wright Park this year on July 12 from noon to 6 p.m., according to the Rainbow Center, the LGBTQ+ organization that runs the event.
For the past decade the Pride festival has been held in Fireman's Park in downtown Tacoma, said Troy Christensen, the Rainbow Center's Board President. In the last few years more than 20,000 people attended the event, which pushed the center to look for alternative locations that could accommodate that traffic, he said.
The 27-acre Wright Park, 501 S. I St., was found to be the only park in town that could accommodate crowds of that size plus food trucks, Christensen said. The park is also near bus and train lines.
'The parks department is on board, the city's on board, the county executive's excited about the location change,' he said. 'We think it will allow us to continue to expand.'
This year attendees can expect musicians, singers, dancers and drag performances on two stages, he said. Although the event is open to all ages, there will likely be a beer garden limited to attendees who are 21 and older, Christensen said. A line-up will be published at a future date on tacomapride.org.
Pride celebrations in Tacoma began in the early 1990s in Lincoln Park before moving to the Theater District downtown and then Fireman's Park, Christensen said.
Tacoma's annual Pride celebration is funded primarily through sponsorships from local companies, vendor fees and a grant from Tacoma Creates, as opposed to large corporate sponsors, Christensen said.
Although he wasn't aware of any big sponsors pulling their funding this year, Christensen said he is concerned there will not be enough funding for Pride given 'everything that's happening federally.'
'You see companies you would never expect to see pulling their pride flags and decimating their DEI programs and their commitments to equity,' he said. 'We don't know what will happen this year, but assuming that even the LGBTQ population of the South Puget Sound all shows up, it's still going to be huge.'
Those looking to sponsor or support Tacoma Pride can reach out to info@rainbowcntr.org.
Christensen said the federal government is pushing the message that LGBTQ+ people are 'wrong and bad,' and events like this combat that message and show people they are celebrated, wanted and loved.
Every year the Rainbow Center fields threats targeting the LGBTQ+ community, he said. The center will be working with the city to make a security plan for Pride, like it does every year, Christensen said.
'People often confuse Pride with one of the seven deadly sins. That is not what we mean by Pride. We mean Pride as opposed to shame,' Christensen said. 'And it is important because, you know, for most of human history, there has been shame associated with being a member of the LGBTQ community, and there is not any longer. As people come out and they find themselves, they want to say, 'Look, I am here, and I am not ashamed to be who I am.''

F2P Friday: A DATE WITH DEATH

Welcome to this week's installment of F2P Friday, where we highlight our favorite Free-2-Play games. The video game market is oversaturated, and sometimes, hidden gems fall through the cracks. This is where we dig for you and feature a new F2P game we know you will enjoy every week. This month, we celebrate Pride with LGBTQ+-focused and inclusive games featured every week in June. Today, we log into a mythic chat room for A Date With Death . RELATED: Check out our F2P Friday archives A Date With Death You're just an ordinary person, except that for your entire life, you've been narrowly avoiding death. You'd always considered yourself extremely lucky until one night when a strange program suddenly appeared on your computer, and someone claiming to be the Grim Reaper said he's come for your soul. Your life as you know it is thrown upside down. As you delve deeper into the mysterious man that calls himself the Grim Reaper, you begin to wonder if fate brought you two together for a reason. Can you resist his charm, or will you fall for the one destined to take your soul? RELATED: May's Most Anticipated Video Games The Basics Let's get down to the basics of A Date With Death by Two and a Half Studios. A Date with Death is a supernatural romance, chat simulator, and visual novel about the week-long bet you enter against the Grim Reaper to attempt to keep your soul. Create your own character, from appearance to pronouns, decorate your apartment and spend the (possible) last week of your life getting to know the one hunting for your soul. The gameplay comprises two main elements: character customization and dialogue. Often in visual novels, there is either no image of the protagonist or players have little to no input on them so the in-depth customization is an impressive addition. Players have control of their physical appearance, their pronouns, and their name, which can be updated throughout the game if needed. Visual novels are made great in their dialogue, and A Date With Death excels at building interesting characters and a compelling world through the chat options. Chatting with Grim reveals that your virtual date is snarky, but reading his replies builds a natural, believable conversation that is the basis for a great dating sim. RELATED: Fields of Mistria Is Finally Getting a Dating Mechanic Why Should I Play? So why should you play A Date With Death ? I went into this game not assuming much, only to have any expectations I did have, blown away. If you are a fan of the dating sim genre or well-written visual novels, this is a must-play. The art is beautifully stylized, which creates a charming world and impressive character models. Several mini-games break up the days between chat sessions, and though they don't add to the story, they are remarkably well done anyway. The game is short but memorable and even worth a replay to explore the branching endings. This game is free , but if you would like to support the creator, there is a paid DLC that expands the lore and gives you a little more time with Grim Reaper. If you are ready to log on and chat with Death, you can download A Date With Death to play for free on Steam and F2P Friday: Razzopolis

Pride on High viewing area to benefit Columbus LGBTQ+ groups

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Those heading to the Stonewall Columbus Pride March this weekend can reserve their spot at a special viewing area that benefits central Ohio LGBTQ+ organizations. Boasted as the ultimate parade watching experience, Pride on High is a ticketed event allowing guests to view the march from Parlay Sports Club and Kitchen, Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse, or the recently opened El Vaquero. The event is the only one in the Short North offering live entertainment, food and beverages during the parade, along with shade and private restrooms. In its 15th year, Pride on High was created by organizer Mike Maly and his husband, who noticed in 2010 that nearly all of the restaurants in the Short North were closed during the Pride march. Watch a previous NBC4 report on Pride on High in the video player above. Out in Ohio: Stonewall Columbus gets ready for Pride 2025 'All of the restaurants were closed for the Pride parade, and my husband and I actually went down to Hyde Park and there was a high-top table, an umbrella and two chairs, and we sat there,' Maly said. 'That following Monday, I called them and said, 'Would you consider being open?' And that was the start.' Their first year, Pride on High just welcomed 25 guests. But the event has steadily grown, from about 440 attendees right before the COVID-19 pandemic to more than 770 last year. Tickets to Pride on High cost $75 per person, with every dollar benefiting the LGBTQ+ organization of your choosing: Stonewall Columbus, Kaleidoscope Youth Center, Equality Ohio, or Mozaic by Equitas Health, a community center for transgender, gender nonconforming, and nonbinary Ohioans. 'The mission is to bring the Columbus community together and provide funding for LGBTQ+ youth and community initiatives that, in turn, provides resources for a safe, educated and healthy future,' Maly said. 'Each and every one of these organizations, I know exactly where every dollar goes, and it's not wasted.' List: 2025 Pride Month events, festivals in central Ohio NBC4 will be streaming the march from Pride on High, with anchor Colleen Marshall hosting alongside Columbus drag queen Virginia West and Amber Nicole, who will be performing two songs before the parade. Maly said this year, 'It's important for everyone to be seen, to be heard, to celebrate who we are' in the wake of federal measures and legislation at the Ohio Statehouse that opponents deem 'anti-LGBTQ+.' Maly said the rhetoric is having a tangible effect on Pride on High, as sales are down 50% compared to this time last year. 'I think with the political environment and everything that's going on out there, it's impacting the sales,' Maly said. 'This has been very tough this year. I've worked for over 30 years and making people's lives better and making sure that kids have a better future, and that's what keeps me going.' Nissan, Walmart dial back Stonewall Columbus sponsorships for Pride 2025 While ticket sales may be down, Maly said donations to operate Pride on High are higher than they've ever been before. 'That tells me that there are people out there that truly do believe in who we are, what we are, what we bring to the world, and this is ridiculous what we're going through right now,' Maly said. 'Hopefully, we'll get some of the folks to come and join the party.' Learn more about Pride on High and purchase tickets here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
