
New evidence suggests surprise reason behind fall of Roman Empire
Scientists have uncovered evidence that sheds light on a little-known ice age that may have contributed to the decline of the Roman Empire.
"Unusual rocks," discovered in Iceland, are believed to have been carried by icebergs travelling from Greenland sometime between 540 and 800 AD.
This period of intense, rapid cooling, known as the Late Antique Little Ice Age, coincided with the crumbling of Roman power.
Researchers suggest this climatic shift may have been the final blow to the already weakened empire.
The ice age is thought to have been triggered by three major volcanic eruptions, the resulting ash clouds blocking sunlight and causing a drop in global temperatures.
A University of Southampton spokeswoman said: 'Historians have long debated the role of climatic cooling in the fall of the Roman empire.
'This new research strengthens the case that a brief but intense period of cooling may have kicked an already declining empire and played a key role in inciting the mass migrations that reshaped Europe in this period.'
Tom Gernon, professor of earth science at the University of Southampton and co-author of the report, published in the journal Geology, said: 'When it comes to the fall of the Roman empire, this climate shift may have been the straw that broke the camel's back.'
Dr Christopher Spencer, associate professor at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and lead author of the research, said that the team, which also involved the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, analysed the age and composition of the rocks found on a raised beach terrace on Iceland's west coast
He said: 'We knew these rocks seemed somewhat out of place because the rock types are unlike anything found in Iceland today, but we didn't know where they came from.'
The analysis involved examination of tiny mineral crystals called zircons, locked inside the rocks, which enabled the team to pinpoint their source.
The scientists were able to locate the source to specific regions of Greenland.
Dr Spencer said: 'This is the first direct evidence of icebergs carrying large Greenlandic cobbles to Iceland.'
Prof Gernon added: 'The fact that the rocks come from nearly all geological regions of Greenland provides evidence of their glacial origins.
'As glaciers move, they erode the landscape, breaking up rocks from different areas and carrying them along, creating a chaotic and diverse mixture, some of which ends up stuck inside the ice.'
He said that the study showed that the 'ice-rafted' rocks were likely deposited during the 7th century.
Prof Gernon said: 'This timing coincides with a known major episode of ice-rafting, where vast chunks of ice break away from glaciers, drift across the ocean, and eventually melt, scattering debris along distant shores.'
Dr Spencer added: 'What we're seeing is a powerful example of how interconnected the climate system is. When glaciers grow, icebergs calve, ocean currents shift, and landscapes change. Climate-driven iceberg activity may have been one of the many cascading effects of rapid cooling.'

A pioneering device could help patients with the incurable neurological disease Parkinson's walk again, researchers suggest. Nearly 150,000 people in the UK suffer from Parkinson's disease, a degenerative condition that can cause tremors, muscle stiffness and slowness of movement as nerve cells in the brain die. As the disease progresses, patients tend to develop difficulty walking, as automatic movements like picking up and landing each foot become harder. This can lead to slower, shuffling steps that increase the risk of falls – often leading to hospitalisation. Now medics say a new device – which uses tiny electrical shocks to contract muscles in the foot and help raise the toes during each step – could help those with Parkinson's to regain their stride. Researchers at Salisbury District Hospital, in partnership with the University of Southampton, are conducting the first large-scale trial of the technology for Parkinson's patients, called a Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) device. It is already used by patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), and those who have had a stroke, to improve their walking. Previous studies have shown its effectiveness at increasing walking speed and reducing falls in Parkinson's patients – even after participants stopped using the device. Participants also reported important wider benefits to their overall wellbeing, independence and family life. Professor Paul Taylor, consultant clinical scientist at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust and leader of the trial, hopes the FES device can soon be used for Parkinson's patients in the UK. 'Nearly four in ten people with Parkinson's disease are recurrent fallers, experiencing an average of 21 falls a year,' he said. 'This can lead to a reduction in overall activity, fitness, health and social participation. 'FES is already recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence as an assistive device for people with dropped foot due to a stroke or MS, and we believe it could offer similar benefits to those with Parkinson's disease.'

When you think of Antarctica, you probably picture flat, cold and desolate landscapes, perhaps with the odd penguin here and there. But did you know there are actually rugged and rocky mountain ranges, valleys and hills not only above ground but also hidden one - buried deep below the surface of the icy continent? The ancient Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains in the middle of East Antarctica were discovered beneath the highest point of the East Antarctic ice sheet in 1958. A group of explorers discovered them using sound waves to study the Earth's surfaces. But new research has shone a light on how this huge underground mountain range came to exist. Usually mountain ranges, like the Himalayas and the Andes, rise up due to movement of two tectonic plates in the Earth's crust clashing together. But there are no such plates in the Antarctic, leaving geologists scratching their heads as to how the Gamburtsev Mountains came to exist. However, the new study, published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters, suggests the hidden mountain chain appeared more than 500 million years ago when the supercontinent Gondwana, which was made up of what is now Africa, South America, Australia, India and Antarctica, was formed. Usually, as with the European Alps and other mountain ranges, the geography changes because they become worn down by erosion or re reshaped by later events. But because they have been 'hidden' by a deep layer of ice, the Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains are one of the best-preserved ancient mountain belts on Earth.

One frustrated user vented: 'That just scrambled my brains.' At the centre of this geological Russian nesting doll is a small, sea-horse-shaped island measuring just over 300 metres (1,000ft) long from end to end. As the glaciers moved, they carved out a network of channels and deposited small hills made up of glacial till, a mixture of clay, sand, and rock dug up by glaciers. Dr Daniel Kerr, a geologist from the Geological Survey of Canada, told NASA's Earth Observatory: 'This area became ice-free by about 8,000 years ago. 'But because of the weight of the ice sheet, the land was depressed and the waters of the Arctic Ocean flooded the land.' That left the region dotted with millions of small lakes, many of which had islands of them which, in turn, had their own nested lakes and islands.
