British & Irish Lions coaching legend Jim Telfer has put forward Ben Thomas as a surprise tourist for this summer's trip to Australia.
Telfer, who assisted Sir Ian McGeechan on the victorious 1997 tour of South Africa, has picked his own 45-man squad ahead of the Lions' official announcement next week - opting to choose three players in each position. And, at a time when many are expecting Wales to have their lowest contingent on a Lions tour since 1993, Telfer ended up plumping for seven Welshmen.
"My third choice may surprise some people but I have been impressed by Ben Thomas of Cardiff and Wales," Telfer told Scotland Rugby News as he picked Thomas as one of three inside centres behind Scotland's Sione Tuipulotu and Ireland's Bundee Aki.
"In a poor Wales team he has been very good. Scotland's Tom Jordan came into my thinking as he is on the up, but didn't make my top three."
Thomas, who has established himself at Test level in the last year, was described as the "best back in Wales" by Warren Gatland last year - although the former Wales coach then played him out of position at fly-half.
As well as Cardiff centre Thomas, he included loosehead prop Nicky Smith, hooker Dewi Lake, second-row Dafydd Jenkins, flanker Jac Morgan, No. 8 Taulupe Faletau and scrum-half Tomos Williams.

Telfer, famed for his iconic 'Everest' speech on the 1997 tour, also noted that Wales full-back Blair Murray would be on his reserve list.
"As a British & Irish Lions coach you should never look at what country a player comes from," Telfer added.
"Any selections, as mine are here, should be based on the quality of the player. I am sure I have made some picks that people won't agree with and I am hoping everybody is fit enough to be considered so obviously things could change but this team I have selected for the first Test can win in Australia.
"There are a lot of good back-row forwards I have picked too and who are available to Andy Farrell, and whoever doesn't make the Test team will feel disappointed, but that is how it goes." 25% OFF DEAL NOW: Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby
Despite that, both Morgan and Faletau make his - admittedly heavily-populated - back-row selection.
Morgan - described by the 85-year-old as a "good captain of a poor Wales side" - is sandwiched between first choice Josh van der Flier and England back-row Ben Curry, while "incredible" Faletau also sits between Irish duo Caelan Doris and Jack Conan.
On the blindside, Telfer opted for England duo Tom Curry and Ben Earl, as well as Scotland's Jamie Ritchie - one of 10 Scots in his squad.
Exeter lock Jenkins is one of six second-rows in Telfer's squad - as he notes that both the Welshman and Irish lock Joe McCarthy are aggressive and will "annoy the opposition".
England duo Maro Itoje and Ollie Chessum are Telfer's first-choices, with Ireland's Tadhg Beirne and Scotland's Scott Cummings the other second-rows.
There's no Welsh tighthead, with Telfer opting for Irish duo Tadhg Furlong and Finlay Bealham to tour alongside Zander Fagerson.
However, Lake is picked as one of the three hookers alongside Dan Sheehan and Luke Cowan-Dickie, while loosehead Smith is picked behind Ellis Genge and Andrew Porter.
Telfer was particularly complimentary of Smith, calling him an "excellent player". He added: "For me, he is a similar player to Tom Smith and I can't pay a prop a higher compliment than that."
In the backline, there's very little Welsh interest. Scrum-half Williams sneaks in alongside Jamison Gibson-Park and Alex Mitchell, with his club form and the fact that Scotland nine Ben White doesn't start regularly for Toulon cited as the reasons for his inclusion.
Finn Russell, Fin Smith and Sam Prendergast are Telfer's fly-halves, with Garry Ringrose, Huw Jones and Robbie Henshaw his outside centres.
In the back-three, Tommy Freeman, Darcy Graham and Tom Roebuck are his right wing options, while James Lowe, Duhan van der Merwe and Kyle Steyn are his choices on the left flank.

As for full-back, Scarlets full-back Murray is the next cab off the rank behind Blair Kinghorn, Hugo Keenan and George Furbank.

Major European holiday destination opens e-gates to British travellers
UK holidaymakers will soon be able to skip long passport queues at a major European airport, thanks to a new UK-EU deal. Portugal will be the first country in the EU to allow UK passport holders to use e-gates after the deal was struck. The rollout will begin at Faro airport in the Algarve, just in time for the busy summer travel season. The Algarve region is one of the most popular holiday destinations for British holidaymakers, with millions of travellers passing through Faro airport last year. Since Brexit, UK passport holders have had to queue at manned border control desks to get their passports stamped when entering the Schengen area countries. But under a new agreement struck at a UK-EU summit in May, it was confirmed that there would be no legal barriers to UK travellers using e-gates. Fuel your wanderlust with our curated newsletter of travel deals, guides and inspiration. Sign up here. Cabinet Office minister Nick Thomas-Symonds confirmed the news in Parliament last week, saying: 'The historic deal that we signed with the EU on May 19 is in our national interests. 'Good for bills, borders and jobs. It slashes red tape and bureaucracy, boosts British exporters and makes life easier for holidaymakers.' The Prime Minister's official spokesman said that millions more Brits heading to the Algarve will be able to use the e-gates in time for summer holidays. He added: 'We're obviously continuing to work with other countries and other airports to ensure Brits can use more e-gates as soon as possible and that work continues.' Just last week, Portuguese media reported large queues at passport control at Faro airport, with delays of up to two hours. More Trending Last year, tourists were met with three-hour delays at Faro airport, due to e-gates reportedly not working. Pictures shared on social media showed travellers crammed in like sardines before passport control. The EU's Entry/Exit system (EES), expected to launch in October 2025, will eventually replace manual passport checks from non-member countries. According to the UK government website, when EES is introduced, travellers to the Schengen zone will need to create a digital record on their first arrival at the airport. It explains: 'If you are travelling to a country in the Schengen area using a UK passport, you will be required to register your biometric details, such as fingerprints or a photo, when you arrive.' Chris Eubank Sr issues honest plea to son as Conor Benn rematch looms
The British boxing icon shocked the world after he attended his son's fight with Benn - but has now offered his verdict amid talks of a potential sequel Chris Eubank Sr believes his son 'got away with it' and insists he is able to make money 'out of other things' amid talks of a potential Conor Benn sequel. Eubank Jr finally went head-to-head with Benn back in April after years of trading barbs online. In an epic back-and-forth dust-up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, Eubank Jr would eventually go on to get his hand raised on points. The event was not without drama though. At the official weigh-ins, Eubank Jr failed to make weight after coming in in first at 160.2lb before weighing 160.05lb at his second attempt and was therefore forced to pay Benn £375,000. That said, on the day of the fight, he avoided another hefty fine after coming in under the 170lb limit. Ahead of the contest, Eubank Sr had slammed the fight and believed his son was 'killing himself' in order to make the 160lb limit. The 58-year-old shocked the world on fight night after turning up to support his son. A little over a month on from the first encounter, Sr has shared his thoughts following reports that the pair will renew their rivalry again later this year. Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Sr addressed his son, saying: "So, the rematch is... Jr you have everything. You're rich. Those promoters... they hate you because they can never get close to anything that you do. The analogy I will use is that they are looking at you like you are a rocket, you have taken off. All the fuel burners and tanks have fallen back to Earth and you are now in space. They do not have the oxygen to be in the world you live in. They will do anything to live at that atmosphere. "Jr, you are rich, and you can make money out of other things. You said it, 'my dad is open and honest. He is not sneaky.' I am being open and honest. I am not being sneaky now. I am telling you of the state you were in. You got away with it. You have taken all the goods. "You have chastised them You have told them 'you do not talk when I am in this press conference. You do not talk. This is about me and my opponent.' Because, yes, you can always see that they are riding on your back or the backs of the fighters. Trying to make themselves something on the strengths of your work. The fact that you have put a stop to that, it hurts them in a way that you could never imagine. You have done it, son. Do not play a game with them, son. They do not have any scruples." Article continues below Benn remains desperate to secure a rematch with his long-time rival, with September 27 eyed as the potential date for a second fight, according to boxing promoter Eddie Hearn. "I know September 27, back at Spurs, is a date that he [Saudi financier Turki Alalshikh] has put forward and proposed. We're ready, really. We signed the contract for two fights," Hearn told Sky Sports. "Conor's just desperate to run it back. He feels like he's going to improve a lot going into that fight. [It was] his first fight in 14, 15 months, at 160lbs. Look, they provided us with just a night we'll never forget in so many ways. And both fighters deserve so much credit. We'd love to run it back."

Australian astounded after visiting UK as he says Brits are 'built differently'
An Australian who visited the UK said Brits are "built differently", and there's a key reason why. He was left astounded after stopping by as he ventured on a trip to Venice An Australian who visited the UK was left astounded when he touched down in the airport. Liam Dowling was left totally floored by one thing when he landed on British soil, and claimed there's a specific reason why Brits are "built differently" to other people around the world. Liam's video has gone viral after he shared it on TikTok and his explanation left people in total hysterics. In the clip, he admitted he was travelling to Venice, but stopped at an airport in the UK on his travels and, when he called by the Wetherspoons, he couldn't get over one thing. In the video, he said: "I'm here at the Spoons airport, on my way to Venice. It's 5am - there's not a single person in here not drinking. It's 5am. "I feel like in Aus, we kind of wait until like 7am/8am - you get some looks if you're drinking in the airport at 5am. No one here gives a f***. "I reckon you could come here at 4am, and it would not matter. Like, Britian just - they don't care. Maybe it's the Europe/Aus thing, but everyone here is boozing and I love it. Bit too early for me though, so, I'm just going to stick to my coffee." The video has been viewed over 100,000 times since it's been shared, and people have been left gobsmacked by it. Natually, some Brits just couldn't stop laughing. One said: "God forbid a nation has hobbies." Another wrote: "Time doesn't exist in the airport or on Christmas Day." A third replied: "I'm Polish (we're infamous for drinking a lot) and I have been living in the UK for 10 years, but even I can't hack how they do it. Brunch time, 11ish, I can get, but 5am is crazy business." Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: "Got to a NY airport at 6am. Asked for a Bacardi and they said no alcohol til midday. I was gobsmacked." One more also quipped: "Spoons in Birmingham airport was absolutely rammed at 2am when I last went." People had all sorts of stories about drinking at airports, but many seemed to agree on one idea - time doesn't exist when you're about to hop on a plane. Many Brits couldn't help but laugh in the comments, with a cheeky pre-flight tipple appearing to be the norm for many - no matter what time it may be. Thoughts and theories were super varied, but many Brits couldn't help but make jokes about it. The video really did make many people chuckle. Another wrote: "If you think about it, 5am is just really late at night. 7am would be more unacceptable, as I consider that morning. Regardless of time though, if I'm at an airport, then I'm at Spoons drinking." One more added: "Every time I fly from Manchester Airport, I choose as early as I can 4am/5am, grab a burger and sit in the bar with a few pints and watch the planes until my gate opens. Like my father, and my father's father." Meanwhile, someone else chimed in with: "Time does not exist in airports. Except the time you've got to catch your flight - that one's important."
