Auburn baseball's Andrew Dutton has 'movie script' home run in first at-bat of season
For the entirety of the Auburn baseball season, Andrew Dutton has had a presence inside the first base coaches' box, serving an unofficial role as an extension of the coaching staff.
But that changed Tuesday in No. 6 Auburn's final non-conference game of the season against Jacksonville State.
With Auburn holding an 18-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, Tigers manager Butch Thompson called his graduate student infielder off the bench to swing. And that's exactly what Dutton did, as the Southside, Alabama native launched one to deep right field at Plainsman Park for his first home run and hit of the season.

"The crowd going crazy was a dream come true," Dutton told Auburn Athletics after the game. "It's what I've been waiting for. It was awesome. The guys have always been super supportive of just me and being the teammate that I am. That's the biggest thing is just having those 40 best friends who really care about you."
Wednesday's game marked the first game that Dutton saw play in a Tigers uniform after transferring in from Birmingham-Southern College before the season. A three-year starter at Birmingham-Southern, Dutton led his former squad to the Division III College World Series last season while leading the team in hitting with a .340 average, 68 hits, 61 runs and 12 doubles.
"It was movie script stuff to me," Thompson added. "That's what it is all about. That's the good stuff. You talk about capitalizing on a moment. We had a blast with that tonight. That was a special moment. He's got that for life, to run around these bases in an Auburn uniform. He's worked every day to be ready to play the game, and you're rewarded for stuff like that."
The Tigers run-ruled the Gamecocks 19-1 in seven innings, earning their 37th win of the season while extending their win streak to five games.
Auburn now heads into an important three-game weekend series to close out SEC regular season play against Ole Miss starting Thursday, May 15 at 6:30 p.m. CT at Swayze Field in Oxford, Mississippi. The Tigers currently hold a two-game lead over the Rebels for ninth place in the SEC standings.

CHICAGO — Kerry Carpenter hit three home runs against the Chicago White Sox on Monday, June 2, in the opener of a four-game series at Rate Field — launching his first shot in the first inning, another in the fourth, and his final blast in the sixth. The Detroit Tigers won easily, 12-1. Advertisement They're the first MLB team to 40 wins, with a 40-21 record. The 27-year-old, a former 19th-round draft pick, became the first Tigers player to hit three homers in a game since Victor Martinez on June 16, 2016. It marked the best game of Carpenter's four-year MLB career, which now spans 292 games. He finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs in five plate appearances. His three home runs combined for 1,156 feet. These were the three homers: In the first, he hit a middle-middle 83.9 mph changeup from right-hander Jonathan Cannon for a 401-foot homer to right-center field. In the fourth, he hit a down-and-in 87.5 mph cutter from right-handed reliever Bryse Wilson for a 357-foot homer to right field. In the sixth, he hit a middle-middle 92.4 mph fastball from Wilson for a 398-foot homer to center field. An amazing catch The Tigers made a one-in-a-million catch in the fifth inning, courtesy of the catcher and the third baseman. It was Dingler to Zach McKinstry. A ball hit into foul territory tipped off Dingler's glove, then ricocheted off McKinstry's leg, and somehow ended up in McKinstry's glove — just before landing in the dirt. Jack Flaherty dominates Cubs, top of the order delivers in Tigers' 4-0 win
In an early-season interleague battle of first-place teams, the Detroit Tigers came out victorious. With a sellout crowd Sunday, June 8, at Comerica Park of 40,343 (the fifth sellout of the season and third in a row), the Tigers beat the Chicago Cubs, 4-0. Advertisement The win clinched the series for Detroit (43-24), which took two out of three games from the National League central-leading Cubs (40-25). "Two out of three in front of our home fans against that team is exactly the type of environment that we want to create for the rest of the summer," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. "There's a lot of quality baseball being played by these two teams that was on display this weekend, and (we) took it to win the series." He finished the game 3-for-4 with a run, registering his seventh game with at least three hits in 2025. "But just a chance to go out and go win a series, win another game, anytime you get a chance to do that it's fun." He then got the next batter Seiya Suzuki — who hit two home runs the day before — to strike out on a foul tip. He also struck out ex-Tigers catcher Carson Kelly on a curve the next inning and Swanson in the third, getting four called strikes and five whiffs of the 17 curveballs he threw in his first three innings. Flaherty struck out five batters through three, eclipsing the total he had from his previous outing (four) in Monday's win against the White Sox. Flaherty got into his first bit of trouble in the fourth inning, starting off with back-to-back walks to Happ and Tucker. He then struck out Suzuki but allowed a single to Crow-Armstrong that looked to score Happ from second. Advertisement A strong throw from Carpenter in right field and a quick tag from catcher Dillon Dingler got the second out of the inning, with the call upheld on Chicago's challenge. Flaherty then walked Kelly to load the bases, but got out of the inning without allowing a run on Michael Busch's hard lineout to center. "Just all throughout these guys have been incredible, and it's just a testament to the work they put in," Flaherty said. "It makes it a lot of fun to watch and easy to trust the defense." Flaherty's seventh strikeout, via a fastball on second baseman Nico Hoerner in the fifth inning, got both Hoerner and Cubs manager Craig Counsell ejected by home plate umpire Derek Thomas for arguing. Detroit Tigers are No. 1 in most MLB power rankings
More than one-third of the way into the MLB season, the Detroit Tigers have the best record in baseball at 43-24. They also solidified their status as a top-tier contender after taking two of three games against the National League Central-leading Chicago Cubs over the past weekend. The Tigers also sold out all three of their home games against the Cubs, the first time this season they have sold out every game of a home series. Advertisement Spirits are high for Tigers fans, and now the national media is starting to recognize Detroit as MLB's premier team. This week's power ranking roundup shows a clean sweep of the Tigers in the top position—with the exception of one outlet (we'll get to them in a second). Here is a roundup of power rankings from MLB analysts and where they place the Tigers: USA TODAY listed the Tigers as the No. 2 team in baseball in last week's power rankings, behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers. But with more Dodgers pitchers landing on the injured list and the team going 5-5 in their last 10 games, they cede the No. 1 spot this week to Detroit. has the Tigers as their No. 1 team for the second week in a row, with Will Leitch highlighting the team's expanding lead in the American League Central: Advertisement "A whole bunch of teams in the AL Central have been losing enough games lately that the Tigers may well put this division away here in the next couple of weeks.
