Focus on river pollution prevention not Cauvery Aarti: Forum
Mysuru: The People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Mysuru unit, opposed the state govt's proposal to organise a Cauvery Aarti during the Dasara festival at an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore.The traditional Baagina offered to the Cauvery River whenever KRS fills to the brim, and the Threethotbava at Talacauvery, the birthplace of the Cauvery River in Kodagu district, are sufficient religious offerings, it argued.It said the Karnataka govt should stop imitating the Ganga Aarati, which it described as part of the BJP's political agenda.Instead of the proposed Cauvery Aarathi, PUCL demanded that the state govt spend the amount and take concrete initiatives to prevent pollution of the river. Additionally, the pollution of its tributary, Lakshmanthreetha, due to the effluents from the tobacco industry of Hunsur and surrounding regions, is a long-standing matter of concern that the govt appears to be completely unmindful of, it claimed.PUCL said the govt should also focus its attention and finances on restoring the various lakes and other water bodies in the Cauvery basin.

Maoist leader killed in gunfight with security forces in Chhattisgarh
A central committee member of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) was killed in a gunfight with security forces in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on Thursday, said Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai. The member identified as Gautam, alias Sudhakar, had a bounty of Rs 40 lakh on his head, according to The Hindu. The central committee is the highest decision-making body of the Communist Party of India (Maoist). The gunfight began on Wednesday after a joint team of security forces acted on intelligence reports indicating the presence of suspected Maoist leaders in the Indravati National Park area, Bastar Range Inspector General of Police P Sundarraj told PTI. The Special Task Force, District Reserve Guard, both units of the Chhattisgarh Police and Commando Battalion for Resolute Action – a specialised unit of the Central Reserve Police Force – were involved in the operation, Sundarraj added. He said that an AK-47 rifle, along with a large cache of explosives, weapons and ammunition, was recovered during the operation. Sai stated on Thursday that apart from Sudhakar, ' several other ' suspected Maoists were killed during the security operation. He did not confirm the number of suspected Maoists killed. Sudhakar allegedly led the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist)'s technology team and the Regional Political School, an ideological training school for recruits, Sundarraj told The Hindu. This comes two weeks after Nambala Keshav Rao, the leader of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist), was killed in a gunfight with security forces on May 21. The police have stated that 186 suspected Maoists have been killed in gunfights with security personnel in the Bastar range in 2025. In 2024, 217 suspected Maoists were killed by security forces across Chhattisgarh. Malini Subramaniam has reported for Scroll that while many of those killed in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region in 2024 were declared by the police to be reward-carrying Maoists, several families dispute the claim. The families claim that the persons killed were civilians.

PM Modi in J-K today: Inaugurates Chenab railway bridge, lays off foundation Rs 46,000 crore at Katra, flags off Vande Bharat trains In a major push for the valley, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the world's tallest bridge over Chenab river ahead of dedicating to the nation the much-awaited Kashmir rail service. A multi-tier security setup has been put in place for the prime minister's visit, his first to the Union Territory post Operation Sindoor launched by the Indian Armed Forces across the border to hit terrorist infrastructure during the intervening night on May 6 and 7 in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 dead on April 22. After inaugurating the Chenab bridge, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to inaugurate India's first cable-stayed Anji bridge and flag off Vande Bharat trains to mark the completion of the 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway link (USBRL) that will provide direct train connectivity between Kashmir and rest of the country. Modi will also lay the foundation stone, inaugurate and dedicate to the nation multiple development projects worth over Rs 46,000 crore at Katra, the base camp for pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine atop Trikuta hills in Reasi district. The USBRL project, constructed at a cost of around Rs 43,780 crore includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119 km) and 943 bridges. The project establishes all-weather, seamless rail connectivity between Kashmir and the rest of the country aiming to transform regional mobility and drive socio-economic integration. Flags off two Vande Bharat Express Prime Minister Modi will also flag off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to Srinagar and back. They will offer a swift, comfortable, and reliable travel option for residents, tourists, pilgrims among others. In a major boost to last mile connectivity especially in border areas, Modi will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate various road projects. He will lay the foundation stone of the road widening project from Rafiabad to Kupwara on National Highway-701 and the construction of Shopian bypass road on NH-444 worth over Rs 1,952 crore. He will also inaugurate two flyover projects at Sangrama Junction on National Highway-1 in Srinagar and at Bemina Junction on National Highway-44. These projects will ease traffic congestion and enhance traffic flow for the commuters. Lay foundation stone of major projects Prime Minister Modi will also lay the foundation stone of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Katra worth over Rs 350 crore. It will be the first medical college in Reasi district contributing substantially to the healthcare infrastructure in the region. Out of the total 272 km USBRL project, 209 km was commissioned in phases with the first phase of the 118 km Qazigund-Baramulla section commissioned in October 2009 followed by 18 km Banihal-Qazigund in June 2013, 25 km Udhampur-Katra in July 2014 and 48.1 km long Banihal-Sangaldan stretch in February, last year. The work on the 46-km Sangaldan-Reasi section was also completed in June last year, leaving a total 17 km stretch between Reasi and Katra and this section was finally completed in December 2024.
