Reformed Nuneaton Town promoted at first attempt

BBC News24-03-2025

Reformed Nuneaton Town have begun their intended journey back to the top of English football's non-league pyramid by winning promotion at the first attempt.Loyiso Recci, James Harrison and Louis Baker scored the goals in a 3-0 win at Kirby as they won the Midland Football League Division One with three games to spare. It matches the achievements of Leicestershire side Quorn FC, who won the Northern Premier League Midlands title, and Robbie Savage's Macclesfield, who took the Northern Premier League Premier Division title with six games to spare, as the earliest teams to clinch promotion this season.Nuneaton, who have 99 points, the highest anywhere in the country, while their tally of 118 goals from 39 games makes them joint top scorers in English football, along with Bury FC.The achievements of joint managers Russell Dodd and Darren Acton in breezing through the league with only two defeats, having taken over with no players signed up, is also a happy short-term outcome to the journey the club have been on since running into major financial problems last season."It is nice to see so many smiles again," club legend Acton told BBC Sport. "This is only the beginning. I hope we can go onto even better things. "This was just testament to the lads and how hard they've worked. And the support from the fans has been unbelievable. Without them this club wouldn't be possible."Nuneaton Borough were originally formed in 1899, but reformed in 1937 and again in 1991, before being recreated as a phoenix club in 2008 after Borough were liquidated. The club, founding members of the first national non-league in 1979, were allowed to resume playing under the old Boro name again but, after withdrawing from the Southern League Premier Division Central in January 2024, were wound up by His Majesty's Revenue & Customs. But, after being placed back in the 10th tier, they have now overcome two challenges this season, moving the club back up a level, whilst also generating further funds to cover the costs of finding a home back in Nuneaton.
Currently on a two-year rental deal at nearby Bedworth United, they have generated £40,000, mostly off the back of surplus gate receipts from their above-average following."Everyone's played a part, the board, the volunteers, the players, the management, the kitman and the physio, but especially the fans," agreed Dodd. "They've been with us home and away. We're one family. The league title is for us all."When we got offered the job, we did not have one player. Within the month we built a squad of about 25 for pre-season training, which we reduced to 20. It was selection game-by-game until we found our settled team and formation.
"As the season continued we kept the good run of winning games. Only losing twice is a massive credit to the lads. Since we last lost we're on a 17-game winning streak. We have that winning mentality."The club have already started feasibility studies for a ground back in Nuneaton - one with the potential to host crowds close to 1,000 at every home game. The club expect to be placed in the United Counties League Premier next season rather than the Midland Football League Premier, but they will not find out until the allocations are announced by the Football Association in June.

Raith Rovers close in on first summer signing as defender targeted

Raith Rovers are poised to make non-league defender Jai Rowe their first summer signing. The Kirkcaldy outfit are understood to be in talks with the 23-year-old as they bid to strengthen Barry Robson's squad ahead of the new campaign. It is thought the right-back has been recommended by contacts south of the border. Rowe is out of contract at Boston United and had been offered fresh terms by the National League club. However, it is understood the former Scunthorpe United and Aldershot Town full-back could instead complete a move to Stark's Park. Rowe began his senior career with Barwell in the seventh tier of English football before spending three seasons with Scunthorpe in League Two. Following relegation in 2022, he stayed on with The Iron before making the switch to Aldershot for a brief spell the following January. He has since spent the last two years with Boston and was a regular last term playing under the former Livingston defender, Graham Coughlan. Described as being capable of playing 'across the backline or in midfield', the ever-present Rowe scored nine times in 55 appearances in 2024/25 to finish as Boston's second-top scorer. Right-back has been something of a problem position for Rovers in recent times. Ross Millen was a regular pick until a falling out behind the scenes led to him being frozen out in February 2024. Since then, Raith have had St Johnstone loan player James Brown, ex-Dundee United defender Kieran Freeman and one-time Chelsea youngster Fankaty Dabo on the right side of their defence. With Middlesbrough's George Gitau arriving on loan in January with an injury and failing to make a single appearance, they finished last season with attacker Josh Mullin filling in admirably at right wing-back. But it was clear they needed more defensive cover and it appears they are hopeful Rowe is the answer. Robson has not yet made a signing since it was announced last month that five players – Freeman, Kevin Dabrowski, Aidan Connolly, Euan Murray and Jake Nicholson – had been freed. With Ross Matthews and Callum Smith having since agreed fresh terms, Jamie Gullan and Liam Dick have also departed, whilst youngsters Andy McNeil and Callum Hannah were also said to be 'in discussions'. There have also been changes behind the scenes, with assistant-manager Colin Cameron being axed in favour of a move for former Brechin City boss Andy Kirk.

Cristiano Ronaldo makes 'very difficult' Lionel Messi claim with time almost up

Cristiano Ronaldo's deal with Al Nassr and the Portugal legend has been asked about the prospect of playing against Inter Miami star Lionel Messi before the end of his career Cristiano Ronaldo has not ruled out playing alongside long-time rival Lionel Messi before the end of his career, but has admitted it would be very difficult to do so, with time running out. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United superstar is set to see his contract with Al Nassr expire at the end of the month. Both Ronaldo, 40, and Messi, 37, are likely in the twilight years of their careers with the former playing in the Saudi Pro League and the latter in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami. Nevertheless Ronaldo finished as top goalscorer in his division, while Messi has 10 goals in his 12 starts this season. ‌ Seeing the GOAT contenders playing in the same colours appears unlikely even with Ronaldo possibly eyeing a fresh move however. Although, the ex-Juventus sharpshooter did find some interest from Argentina ahead of the Club World Cup in the United States. ‌ It is clear Ronaldo has respect for the nation and his adversary however. Asked about the prospect, Ronaldo provided a thoughtful answer. "You know I have a lot of affection for Argentina, my wife is from there," Ronaldo replied. "I have already been invited to play in the Club World Cup for an Argentine club. "You never know… the time is there. I am already 40 years old, but you never know. But I think it is very difficult. I have never been to Argentina, I want to go, I have a lot of affection for the Argentines. "And I have affection for Messi, we were rivals for many years, but I have already said that we were in that scenario for 15 years and I remember that before he didn't speak any English, I don't know if he does now. And I translated for him when they explained to us what we had to do at a gala. "I have affection for him, he has always treated me well and respected me as I respect him. I find it very difficult, but you never know." ‌ With less than a month remaining on Ronaldo's deal, there has been no shortage of speculation over his next step. To some degree, there was an expectation a deal would be set up to see him play in the Club World Cup, but Ronaldo has now suggested the possibility of that is noow over. "It's irrelevant, at this moment it doesn't make sense to talk about other things other than the national team," he said. "There have been a lot of contacts, I see things that make sense, others that don't, as the other guy says, you can't go to everything, you have to think short, medium and long term. "It's a decision that has practically been made on my part, which is not to go to the Club World Cup, but I've had a lot of invitations."
