Couple publicly flogged in Indonesia for sex outside marriage
Banda Aceh - A man and woman were publicly flogged 100 times each in Indonesia's conservative Aceh province on June 4 after they were found guilty of sex outside marriage by a court operating under strict Islamic law.
Sexual relations between an unmarried couple is outlawed in Aceh, which imposes a version of sharia, the Islamic legal code.
Indonesia banned sex outside of marriage in its latest criminal code in 2022 but that law will not come into force until 2026.
The two were lashed in sets of 10 with a rattan stick as a small crowd watched on at a park in provincial capital Banda Aceh, and the female suspect was lashed by a woman, according to an AFP reporter at the scene.
Three other suspects were caned a combined 49 times for alleged gambling and alcohol consumption.
'Today we are carrying out flogging punishment for perpetrators of adultery, alcohol consumption, and online gambling,' Banda Aceh Mayor Illiza Sa'aduddin Djamal told reporters.
'This becomes a moral lesson for the community at large. This flogging punishment becomes a gateway to repentance for them.'
Medical services were on standby for all of those convicted.
Rights groups have condemned the punishment as draconian.
Yet caning retains strong support among Aceh's population as a common punishment for a range of offences including gambling, drinking alcohol and adultery.
In February two men were publicly flogged more than 150 times after being found guilty of sexual relations. Gay sex is outlawed in Aceh.
The region started using religious law after it was granted special autonomy in 2001, an attempt by the central government to quell a long-running separatist insurgency. AFP

Ukraine denied Russian allegations on Saturday (June 7) that it had indefinitely postponed prisoner swaps, accusing Moscow of "playing dirty games" after overnight Russian missile and bomb strikes on Kharkiv left three people dead and 22 injured. "Today's statements by the Russian side do not correspond to reality or to previous agreements on either the exchange of prisoners or the repatriation of bodies," he said on the Telegram app. Overnight, Russian forces used high-precision long-range weapons and drones to attack military targets in Ukraine, hitting all of them, according to Russia's Defence Ministry. The northeastern city of Kharkiv, one of Ukraine's largest, is just a few dozen kilometres (miles) from the Russian border and has been under frequent Russian shelling during more than three years of war triggered by Russia's full-scale invasion. She was arrested at Terminal 1 after the police received a call for assistance at around 6.25pm on June 6. Police investigations are ongoing. Video footage of the arrest was circulated on Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu on June 7. In the clip, three police officers can be seen pinning down an individual on the carpeted ground in the baggage check-in area in view of onlookers, including children. A woman can be heard screaming incoherently, while two bags can be seen near her in the area just below Terrace Chinese Kitchen. The Xiaohongshu original poster said the woman had brown dyed hair and multiple tattoos on her left arm and appeared to be ethnically Asian. She was seen hitting the self-service check-in machines agitatedly, said the user who wanted to be known only as Mr Liew MK. Some airport personnel, possibly security officers, had approached her to stop, raising a commotion, he said. The woman was later seen taken away in handcuffs, he said, with the whole commotion ending within around 10 minutes. The 39-year-old senator, who is running for the presidency in 2026, is a member of the opposition conservative Democratic Center party founded by former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe. The two men are not related. According to a party statement condemning the attack, the senator was hosting a campaign event in a public park in the Fontibon neighborhood in the capital on Saturday when "armed subjects shot him in the back." The party described the attack as serious, but did not disclose further details on Uribe's condition. Colombia's Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez said a suspect had been arrested in the shooting and that authorities were investigating whether others were involved.
