This weekend, thousands of people will descend on the Principality Stadium to compete in one of sport's trendiest competitions as Hyrox makes its Welsh debut. Some people will be competing in the functional fitness competition for the first time but for Afan Humphries, Wales' most successful Hyrox athlete, the competition will be a familiar one.
A former Welsh cross-country champion, Afan, 37, has always been sporty. But it wasn't until he tried his first Hyrox three and a half years ago that he realised he could compete with some of the world's fittest athletes.
Hyrox - which is taking over the Principality Stadium from Friday, May 30, until Sunday, June 1 - is a fitness competition which consists of eight one kilometre runs, with eight functional workout stations in between. These stations include rowing, sled pushes, wall balls and burpees.
After finishing 12th overall on his debut, Afan is now the only Welsh athlete competing in Hyrox Elite 15, where he competes against the best Hyrox athletes in the world.
Now, having competed in 19 Hyrox competitions, he admits it's "totally addictive".
Afan lives in Bargoed, having grown up in Ystrad Mynach. The Welsh athlete has competed in Italy, Germany, Spain, the USA and the Netherlands but he says the opportunity to compete on home turf is the most exciting yet.
"I couldn't believe it," he said, as he recalled finding out that the event was being held in Cardiff. "I've been hoping for it for a long time because there's no better place to hold Hyrox than in the Principality Stadium.
"When you've been to Manchester, Birmingham or London and seen the atmosphere there, I just know Cardiff's going to be something similar to that, so it's going be great."

Despite being one of the best in the world at Hyrox, Afan works full time laying and repairing broken water mains. In between the physical demands of his job, he fits in around 16 hours a week of training in his gym in Ystrad Mynach.
He talked me through his strict training schedule which ensures he's able to compete with the best.
"There's a lot of running in it and I'd like to do a lot more but because of my job I'm quite limited to the volume I can get in," Afan explained.
"In the mornings, it would probably be an hour and a half in the gym. It'd be all Hyrox-specific training, a bit of sled pushing and interval running and maybe a bit strength work at the end if I've got time. This is all before work so I'm down there between 4am and 4.15am.

"We've got the key to the the gym. I'll be doing these out-and-out runs around the industrial estate when it's pitch black, before the street lights even come on. I'm just running up the middle of the road sometimes, all against the clock.
"In the evenings, it normally depends on how I feel so I'll do anything between eight and 10 miles steady running, or sometimes further if I feel like pushing it."
To date, Afan's personal best is 56 minutes, 19 seconds, which he achieved in Maastricht this year. However, he must constantly keep improving to maintain his place as one of Hyrox's best and to work towards his goal of being the best in the world.

Hyrox Elite 15 is described as "a high-stakes, global competition within the HYROX fitness racing series, where the top 15 male and female athletes compete for the title of HYROX World Champion".
Afan explained: "They combine two of your fastest races and they get an average time of the two. Obviously there's Hyrox nearly every weekend of the year now so if someone beats my time, they'll jump ahead of me and I'll be pushed out of it.
"You think you've done well and you're back in and next week someone else has broken your time and you've been pushed back out!"

The 37-year-old also shared his tips for people competing for the first time.
"Don't go off too hard because it can ruin your whole race, like it did for my first one," he said. "Try to soak up the atmosphere and think this is what you've trained hard for, so just go out there and enjoy."
Afan will compete in the men's pro competition on Friday night and the men's doubles on Saturday night.

Callum Osmand can be Celtic punisher as Marco Silva gives Brendan Rodgers the key to unlock potential
Osmand is set to join the Premiership champions from Fulham as the Hoops take advantage of cross border transfers yet again Marco Silva has told Celtic how to get the best out of incoming new signing Callum Osmand. The Fulham starlet is set to follow in Moussa Dembele 's footsteps and make the move from Craven Cottage to Parkhead as the Premiership champions once again take advantage of cross border transfers for Under 21 payers. They will land the 19-year-old for training compensation and the Welsh youth international is understood to have already completed his Hoops medical. Cottagers boss Marco Silva rates Osmand highly, and promoted him to train with the first team and take his place on the bench towards the end of last season, although he wasn't given an English Premier League run out. And if the Portuguese's comments on Osmand are anything to go by, he will be disappointed to lose him, although the reason for leaving is exactly what Silva said the youngster needed after bringing him into the top team fold at Fulham. And he reckons a strike partner will allow Brendan Rodgers to see Osmand at his full potential further down the line. 'It's not his first time he's been with us," said Silva towards the end of the 2024/25 campaign. "Last season, he had some sessions with us, pre-season too, and the beginning of the season. "He is much more mobile [than a traditional centre forward], let's see if he is going to have a chance or not to play some minutes, but he is going to have a chance to train much more with us, to be much more involved with the first team. 'He needs more senior football in his legs to see how he can adapt, perform. He's got the profile that I like. When he has a chance, he can punish the opposition. "I can see the talent, in a position that is very difficult to play in the Premier League. Probably if you play another striker by his side … you will take the best from him. Let's hope we can help him to be ready for the Premier League.'

Wales fan suffered broken back bone in stadium fall as TV star rushed to help
Wales fan suffered broken back bone in stadium fall as TV star rushed to help The 29-year-old fell from the upper tier of the Stade Roi Baudouin into the lower tier during Monday night's World Cup qualifier Wales' players acknowledge their fans at the end of the game in Brussels (Image: AFP or licensors ) A football fan has issued an update from hospital after falling from the stands while watching Wales' World Cup qualifier against Belgium on Monday night. Welsh supporter Scott Rees fell from the upper tier of the Stade Roi Baudouin into the lower tier while celebrating a goal for Craig Bellamy's side during the 4-3 defeat in Brussels and was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital. Remarkably, the 29-year-old has now reassured fellow fans that he is "fine", although he has also revealed he broke a small bone in his back in the fall. In a post on a Wales football fans group page on Facebook, Mr Rees shared a photo of himself doing a thumbs up alongside two fellow Welsh fans and wrote: "I'm fine. "I fell from the top tier and only broken a small bone in my back. Hope everyone had a good night." He later added: "Really appreciate all the messages, had lots of people checking in on me. I'm battered and bruised but thankfully I'll live to tell the tale with no long term damage." Mr Rees was later seen at Brussels airport in a wheelchair as fans made their way home. Article continues below Reports emerged late in the second half of Monday night's match that a fan had fallen from the top tier of the stadium, with some of the 4,500 Welsh supporters in attendance said to be in tears as the concerning scenes unfolded. Content cannot be displayed without consent Wales fan Ian Hamer told BBC Radio Wales that he had heard a "loud thud" and "huge commotion" shortly after Wales scored their third goal, with Brennan Johnson drawing the teams level at 3-3 having been 3-0 down after 27 minutes. "Police, stewards, paramedics rushed into that area [the lower tier] and three, four rows were cordoned off," said Mr Hamer. "Word got around quickly that a Wales fan had fallen from the front of the top tier into the lower tier of the stadium and had landed, had sort of clipped some fans as he fell. "The next sort of 15 minutes the paramedics were treating the man and eventually they took him out on a stretcher and brought an ambulance to the back of the concourse, blue lights flashing from where he was taken to hospital after the game. "Everyone's relieved to know that the man who fell is OK." Comedian and broadcaster Elis James is believed to have been one of the first responders to the incident and he has been hailed as a 'Red Wall legend' on social media for how he and several other fans in the lower tier helped Mr Rees. One post said James was among a group of fans who rushed to get help from stewards and emergency services at the stadium, with supporters working with stewards and FAW liason staff to clear the area as paramedics helped the 29-year-old before moving him out of the stands on a stretcher. Welsh comedian, broadcaster, actor and football fan Elis James (Image: Adrian White ) A statement from the FAW on Monday night read: "We can confirm that one male fan fell from the upper to lower tier during the match at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels this evening. "He was conscious and speaking and has now been taken to hospital for further checks." Article continues below The match saw Bellamy's men come close to pulling off an incredible comeback result as goals from Harry Wilson, Sorba Thomas and Johnson put them level with Belgium - who looked home and dry with a 3-0 lead after less than half an hour - with just 20 minutes left of the contest. However, it was to be heartbreak in the end as an 88th-minute strike from Manchester City star Kevin de Bruyne saw the men in red head home from Brussels empty handed.

Wrexham eye big-money target who showed true character after manager bust-up
Wrexham are reported to be eyeing a £2million move for a Championship captain, who once showed his willingness to stand up for himself after being sent on loan by a former boss Wrexham have been linked with a big-money bid to sign the captain of one of their Championship rivals. The Red Dragons are among several clubs reportedly eyeing up Blackburn Rovers man Lewis Travis. The midfielder only has one year left on his current deal at Ewood Park, with Rovers yet to open talks over fresh terms. After earning promotion from League One in April, Wrexham have now expressed an interest in securing his services, as per the Lancashire Telegraph. It's been claimed the 27-year-old would cost the Welsh side, owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, in the region of £2million. That figure matches the club record fee, which they paid to sign striker Sam Smith from Reading in January. Travis is understood to be one of Rovers' top earners, but Wrexham are said to be willing to offer him even higher wages. Signing the Liverpool academy graduate would signal a huge statement of intent by Reynolds and McElhenney, who have made their aim of reaching the Premier League very clear. The combative midfielder has made more than 260 appearances for Blackburn since signing his first professional contract with the club in January 2017. Travis has mostly been a regular in the team ever since, although it hasn't always been plain sailing. One of the most difficult periods in his time at Rovers came following the appointment of Jon Dahl Tomasson as head coach in June 2022. The pair initially enjoyed a positive relationship, with Tomasson rewarding Travis with the captain's armband shortly after his arrival. However, things turned sour as the player struggled for regular football during the first half of the 2023/24 campaign. In January 2024, Travis was sent out on loan to Ipswich Town for the rest of the season. Former Newcastle and AC Milan striker Tomasson claimed at the time that wanting to play in a different position was the main reason for the midfielder's move. But Travis later described the Danish head coach's comments as "unfair" and was not afraid to stand up for himself. In a show of character, he told BBC Radio Lancashire:"I found it very unfair how himself and (former director of football) Gregg Broughton came out and said I wanted to leave because I wasn't playing in the right position. "I would have had a lot more respect if they said the gaffer didn't put me in the captain's meeting or the gaffer didn't put me in the centre mid(fielder)s meeting even though there were under-23s there. I think it was a bit tough and hard to hear for him to come out and say that without me being allowed to say anything." Travis helped Ipswich to secure the club's first promotion to the Premier League in 22 years after they finished second in the Championship in 2024. He returned to Blackburn in the summer of that year, by which point Tomasson had left the club by mutual consent, later taking charge of the Swedish national side. Travis has since re-established himself as an important part of Rovers' midfield, making 38 appearances in their most recent Championship campaign. As well as Wrexham, it's also been speculated that Sheffield United could be keeping tabs on Travis' situation after previously expressing an interest in signing him last summer.
