London Marathon gets record 1.1 million applications for 2026 race
LONDON: The London Marathon has received more than 1.1 million applications for the 2026 race, breaking the world record of 840,318 set in last year's public ballot, organisers said today.
A total of 1,133,813 people across the globe applied for a place in next year's race on April 26.
Nearly 870,000 people in the UK applied, split almost equally between men and women. Around 264,000 people from overseas entered the international ballot.
"This is an absolutely staggering total which reaffirms London as by far the most popular marathon on the planet," London Marathon Events CEO Hugh Brasher said in a statement.
"Marathon Day is always an extraordinary and inspirational day when we celebrate the very best of humanity."
More than 56,000 runners completed the 45th edition of the marathon last week, a world record. - REUTERS

The 45-year-old described Armstrong, who was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles for doping, as a "great strength and inspiration" after receiving his support since ending his career. "Lance has been very, very good to me. That's not something everyone wants to hear because people only like to hear the bad stuff," Wiggins said in an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live on Friday. "It's on a human level. You can only take someone how they treat you. "Lance has been a source of inspiration to me and a constant source of help towards me and is one of the main factors why I'm in this position I am today mentally and physically, so, I'm indebted to him for that." Wiggins became the first Briton to win the Tour de France in 2012 and collected a then-British record eight Olympic medals, including gold in the time trial at the 2012 London Games. He is now collaborating on Armstrong's podcast The Move, where they will be covering this summer's Tour de France, and said their relationship has been grounded in mutual understanding beyond cycling. England are top of Group K after two games with a perfect record while Andorra are bottom with two losses ahead of Saturday's game in Barcelona. Tuchel said England are fully committed to the qualifier where he wants "a win that is never in danger" but also said fans should not "over-expect" them to go all guns blazing right from the start of the game. "It will be on us to get going, it is on us to keep the tempo high, to bring the attacking energy to the pitch and to do this in a relentless way," Tuchel told reporters. "I can fully understand that this is not the easiest time of the season for an international break. The players come from a long and tiring season and then again accepting the role to be responsible for the majority of the game can be demanding. "But at the same time, what I feel from the group is that they are happy to be here. We are quite new together, it is our second camp and I have trust and belief that we will do what is necessary to get the result that we want."
