Wimbledon Day 1 betting preview
It's the day so much of the tennis world has been waiting for, the start of Wimbledon 2025, when all the talk will be about whites, strawberries and hopefully not the weather.

For British players, the pressure is ramping up as the media pin their hopes on someone to replace Sir Andy Murray. For the rest of the field, they dream of lifting the trophies in almost a fortnight's time.
Reigning men's champion Carlos Alcaraz gets play underway on Centre Court against a dangerous opponent in Fabio Fognini, while 14 Brits are in action on day one, including Katie Boulter, Jacob Fearnley, Emma Raducanu and Mimi Xu, who all feature on the show courts.
We've put together a four-fold accumulator from the pick of the action, which pays 57/1 on Betway and equivalent betting sites.
Fabio Fognini vs Carlos Alcaraz prediction
This won't have been the draw either man wanted in the first round at SW19, but it has the potential to be a cracking match to kick off the action on Centre Court.
Alcaraz has already shown good form on grass, winning at Queen's last week but in Fabio Fognini he faces a tricky opponent.
He might be ranked 130 in the world right now, but the Italian has been as high as ninth and reached the third round on seven occasions including last year when he beat Casper Ruud in the second round, so Alcaraz will be wary.
Unsurprisingly, tennis betting sites all have the world number two as favourite for the win at 1/100 while you can get 50/1 on Fognini causing one of the biggest shocks in tennis.
It's hard to see anyone beating the Spaniard on grass but this one might just be a bigger test than many think, after all Fognini has nothing to lose as he closes in on retirement and he will enjoy one last match on Centre Court.

Wimbledon Day 1 prediction 1: Alcaraz to win 3-1 - 5/1 BetVictor
Aryna Sabalenka vs Carson Branstine prediction
World number one Aryna Sabalenka couldn't have had much of a kinder draw as she opens play on Court One against the world number 197 Carson Branstine.
She has been enjoying life back at SW19 after missing last year's tournament through injury and is looking to add the title to the three Grand Slams she has already won.
She was the beaten finalist at both this year's Australian and French Open so can it be third time lucky for the 27-year-old?
Branstine, who came through qualifying, reached the semi-finals of junior Wimbledon in 2017 but this is her first time in the main draw, and it couldn't be a tougher proposition.

Wimbledon Day 1 prediction 2: Under 16.5 games in Sabalenka v Branstine - 19/10 Betway
Jacob Fearnley vs Joao Fonseca prediction
It was this time last year that Jacob Fearnley really made a name for himself after he was given a wildcard to make his Wimbledon debut.
He beat fellow debutant Alejandro Moro Canas and took a set a set off Novak Djokovic before he was eventually beaten in four sets. Twelve months ago, he was ranked just inside the world 300 and now he sits at 51 and as British number two behind Jack Draper.
In Joao Fonseca he faces one of the brightest young stars coming through, who is just three places below him in the world. The 18-year-old reached the last 32 in Paris before he was beaten by Draper, but he has won just twice on grass, losing in the first round in Halle, before he was knocked out in Eastbourne by the eventual winner Taylor Fritz.

This match will be played on Court One and Fearnley has that show court experience from last year so a lot will depend how quickly Fonseca can adapt to his surroundings in his first time in the main draw.
Wimbledon Day 1 prediction 3: Fearnley to beat Fonseca - 9/5 BetVictor
Emma Raducanu vs Mimi XU prediction
There is an all-British affair on Court One as Emma Raducanu takes on wild card Mimi Xu, looking to reach the second round for the fourth time.
The US Open winner is back as British No 1 after an extended run of tournaments, and she will be desperate to keep up that form and move back up the rankings.

17-year-old Xu is making her Grand Slam debut, just as Raducanu did four years ago and she would love to have the same impact but with 278 places separating them in the world rankings we're not expecting a shock in this one.
Wimbledon Day 1 prediction 4: Raducanu to win in two sets - 8/15 William Hill

West Ham United Want To Sign Liverpool Midfielder: Will It Be A Good Signing For The Hammers?

West Ham United have faced a lot of issues in the 2024/25 season due to the lack of quality in the midfield. The departure of Declan Rice has impacted the club a lot. James Ward-Prowse and Edson Álvarez have displayed moments of brilliance, but they have not been able to maintain the consistency level in the middle of the pitch. Graham Potter is now eyeing possible reinforcements in the squad, and he might be looking at the midfield as one area to strengthen in the summer. The scouts have been looking for talented young players who could serve the club for a long time. In this situation, Tyler Morton of Liverpool has emerged in the headlines in the summer transfer window. West Ham United Want To Sign Tyler Morton The West Ham Way has reported that the Hammers are keeping tabs on the Liverpool midfielder, who has not been regular in the first team under Arne Slot. The midfielder only started five games in the last season and then suffered a setback due to a shoulder injury, followed by surgery. Advertisement However, his performances on loan spells at Blackburn Rovers and Hull City have proven his mettle and talent. The 22-year-old Englishman is not an empty promise, as he has shown good judgement with his decision making, ability to read the game, and ability to impose himself in the midfield. However, at a club like Liverpool, injuries and competition have reduced his game time. Opinion: Tyler Morton could be a useful addition for West Ham. He will not arrive as an immediate solution, but as a player with high potential who would fit into the club's current context: betting on young players who can offer long-term performance and growth. His experience in the Championship, where he played more than 60 games on loan, shows that he is seasoned in demanding environments. Technically sound, organised and with a good touch, Morton would provide a different alternative in a squad that sometimes looks predictable in that area of the pitch. The move could also be relatively inexpensive, considering his lack of opportunities at Liverpool. In an inflated market, finding quality in that price range is rare. Betting on him now would be a smart and quick move. If West Ham manage to close the deal without major costs, they would be getting a player with an acceptable present and a future with many possibilities.

Aaron Ekblad takes hometown discount, signs 8-year extension with Cup-champion Panthers

The two-time defending Stanley Cup-champion Florida Panthers are keeping defenseman Aaron Ekblad, signing him to an eight-year, $48.8 million contract extension on Monday, league sources told The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun. The contract carries an average annual value of $6.1 million, a steep discount compared to what Ekblad presumably would have fetched as an unrestricted free agent starting Tuesday. The franchise leader in all main categories among blueliners, Ekblad was coming off an eight-year deal with a $7.5 million AAV. Advertisement Ekblad, 29, was considered the top defenseman on the market because of his ability to play in all situations and log heavy minutes as a right-handed shot and top-pairing presence. He had spent his first 11 seasons with the Panthers and clearly wanted to stay, saying at the start of the Stanley Cup Final, 'I live and breathe for the Florida Panthers. I bleed for the Florida Panthers. I've given my body and everything to this team. I want to keep doing it forever, for as long as they'll let me keep coming to the rink.' say it with me everyone: Aaron Ekblad took a hometown discount to stay with a championship-caliber roster and become a part of a dynasty — Shayna (@shaynagoldman_) June 30, 2025 Drafted as the No. 1 overall pick in 2014, Ekblad is the Panthers' all-time leader in goals (118), assists (262), points (380) and games played (732) among defensemen, with the last category ranking second to Aleksander Barkov among all players. Ekblad won the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie in 2014-15 and has a cumulative plus-96 rating in even-strength play, with just two seasons in which he finished as a minus player. There are some questions that come with Ekblad, most notably in his ability to play a complete season: He has missed 110 games over the last five regular seasons. He was relatively healthy in 2024-25 but had to serve a 20-game suspension — the last 18 regular-season games and the first two in the playoffs — for what he said was mistakenly taking a banned substance that violated the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. Ekblad was suspended again for two playoff games after elbowing Tampa Bay's Brandon Hagel in the first round, but played a big role in the Panthers' successful run to a second straight Cup. He finished with four goals and nine assists in 19 playoff games, with his 13 points trailing only Edmonton's Evan Bouchard and Dallas's Thomas Harley in playoff scoring among defensemen. Advertisement TSN's Bob McKenzie was first to report that the Panthers and Ekblad were nearing completion on a long-term deal. It is another bit of impresive work by Florida general manager Bill Zito to keep the band together and take a run at a three-peat. Zito signed Conn Smythe Trophy winner Sam Bennett to an eight-year extension last week.

Steelers-Dolphins trade: Who won and lost as Jalen Ramsey, Minkah Fitzpatrick get moved?

June is typically the quietest month on the NFL calendar – for whatever that's worth. But Monday offered further proof that America's favorite sports league never really goes dormant, the final day of the month coming with quite the exclamation point as the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins completed a trade as notable as any that's occurred this offseason. CB Jalen Ramsey and TE Jonnu Smith are headed to the Steel City, while FS Minkah Fitzpatrick returns to South Florida eight years after the Fins took him with the 11th selection of the 2018 draft. The teams also swapped Day 3 picks of the 2027 draft, Miami upgrading with a fifth-rounder in exchange for a seventh-rounder. On a day when the winners and losers are usually reserved for Wimbledon, we've got quite a few more to sort through … WINNERS Not only did the three-time All-Pro engineer his departure from Miami, the Steelers also gave Ramsey a $1.5 million raise – he'll be paid $26.6 million in 2025, according to ESPN and the NFL Network. He jumps to a team seemingly in better position to contend as he heads into the 10th season of his exceptional pro career, and – as a defensive back – it certainly doesn't hurt to play behind a pass rush that includes T.J. Watt (presumably), Cam Heyward an Alex Highsmith, among others. TRADE GRADES: Report cards for Steelers, Dolphins following blockbuster The Steelers' new quarterback and offensive coordinator, respectively, welcome another weapon with the arrival of Jonnu Smith. Whether it was his protection, body, age or scheme (and maybe all of the above), Rodgers spent much of last season getting the ball out quickly and throwing down the seams in the intermediate part of the field – which means Jonnu Smith could get a steady of diet balls. And he should hit the ground running given this will be his third stint playing for Arthur Smith, who also coached him in Tennessee and Atlanta and now has another component for his attack on whom he can rely. Much has been made of the fact that Tomlin, who's about to embark on his 19th season as Pittsburgh's head coach has never suffered a losing season … nor has the man who took the Steelers to the Super Bowl twice in his first four years won a playoff game since the 2016 postseason. But you can't accuse him or Khan, entering his fourth season as general manager, of operating conservatively in recent months. Monday's deal follows the long-awaited signing of Rodgers and trade for WR DK Metcalf plus the departure of WR George Pickens in recent months, among other moves. TBD whether a more aggressive approach translates into a deeper playoff run, but it does seem to indicate a shifting mindset for a team that might up hosting a very eventful draft in 2026 – regardless of what happens in 2025, which is likely to be Rodgers' final ride. All due respect to Robert Woods, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, Scotty Miller, Ben Skowronek and others, but Metcalf remains the only bona fide wideout threat on this roster – though it's still worth wondering if Khan makes a run at an unsigned veteran like Keenan Allen or Amari Cooper. Regardless, Smith instantly provides a genuine threat in the intermediate part of the field – one who will doubtless make opposing safeties think twice about shading too far toward Metcalf on the boundary and should consequently create more opportunities for a player who averaged 121 targets during his six seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. Speaking of target share, barring the acquisition of an established pass-catching tight end – and that could still happen – it's not immediately clear who gets the bulk of the 111 Smith had for the Dolphins in 2024. Regardless, Achane (his 78 receptions last season trailed only Smith and WR Tyreek Hill for the Dolphins), a running back whose speed is especially frightening when he has space to operate, figures to benefit. And given QB Tua Tagovailoa's penchant to get the ball out quickly − per Next Gen Stats, his average time to throw, 2.42 seconds, was the fastest among qualifying quarterbacks in 2024 − Achane seems particularly likely to see more balls coming his way. And, for what it's worth, Achane may also have to run the ball more, too – out of necessity – though he does seem to be a guy where less volume means more big plays, his touches more than doubling to 281 in 2024, though his yards per fell by more than 2 yards. Not only does he get to team up with Rodgers while joining a scheme he's intimately familiar with, the veteran tight end gets his contract extended through the 2026 season, during which he stands to make $12 million. LOSERS He's coming off a career year, his 88 catches for 884 yards and eight touchdowns for the Dolphins last season rendering Smith one of the most productive tight ends in the league. As well as he should fit into Pittsburgh's offense, Smith is highly unlikely to ever approach those numbers again with this team (he never caught more than 50 passes in a season during his other hitches with Arthur Smith). But at least the Steelers have already handsomely rewarded Jonnu Smith, who signed a two-year, $8.4 million deal with Miami last year. As much as Arthur Smith fancies double- and triple-tight sets, Jonnu Smith's arrival is going to cut significantly into the playing time for Pittsburgh's three other tight ends. Washington is mostly a glorified tackle, so his role and snap count may not change all that much. But Freiermuth's numbers seem like to suffer and Heyward, the younger brother of team captain Cam Heyward, could even find himself on the roster bubble. It's rare to see a Round 1 pick dealt midway through his second season, but Fitzpatrick wanted out of Miami in 2019 – he didn't feel like his abilities and role with the team aligned – yet now he's reunited with GM Chris Grier, who drafted him in the first place. Miami certainly had a hole to fill in its lineup after losing S Jevon Holland in free agency this year, so Fitzpatrick certainly helps from that standpoint. But he'll no longer get to leverage a Watt-led pass rush. And despite being a five-time Pro Bowler, including each of the past three seasons, Fitzpatrick hasn't been producing the big plays that forged his reputation years ago – generating just one turnover, total, since the start of the 2023 campaign. Smith led Miami with 88 catches last season. Now a quarterback who's eager to distribute the ball but is also prone to concussions, has lost his security blanket. Maybe this will make more sense down the line, but for right now...? Miami's GM and head coach, respectively, seem to have authored a transaction that doesn't exactly smack of "win now" – though it was clear they had to move on from Ramsey, who was ready to depart. And much as Steelers fans might be desperate for postseason success, the Dolphins haven't won a playoff game since 2000 − the longest drought in the league. Owner Stephen Ross gave his leadership a vote of confidence after last season's 8-9 finish but also said '(C)ontinuity in leadership is not to be confused with an acceptance that status quo is good enough. We will take a hard look at where we have fallen short and make the necessary changes to deliver our ultimate goal of building and sustaining a winning team that competes for championships." Hard to see how this trade cools the other kind of Florida heat Grier and McDaniel, who have now lost four team captains this offseason, are trying to beat. And the reaction one of their former players, RB Raheem Mostert, had to the trade speaks (to some level) on how things could unfold … Hot take: Be a Pro-bowler on the Dolphins, get treated like sh*t. Happy for my guys though! GO BALL OUT!! After the Baltimore Ravens recently signed CB Jaire Alexander, the AFC North now welcomes another elite corner with the arrival of Ramsey, a Pro Bowler in seven of his nine NFL seasons. It's certainly not the most welcome development for the division's high-profile quarterbacks. It remains to be seen how Pittsburgh's lineup shakes out, specifically as to whether Ramsey, always a fantastic ball hawk, gets a look at free safety or not. But that seems unlikely given a trade of this magnitude – and especially so since the Steelers have experienced players like Miles Killebrew and Juan Thornhill available to step into Fitzpatrick's role. And if Ramsey does remain at corner, it begs the question of what happens to recently signed Slay and Porter, a second-round pick in 2023. All of them play predominantly on the outside, Ramsey's 185 snaps in the slot last season nearly double the total of Slay, who spent 2024 in Philadelphia, and Porter combined in 2024. But is a 30-year-old star going to live in the slot, which was typically manned by Bishop, an undrafted rookie in 2024? It's a very solid bet that Ramsey will operate however he's most comfortable in 2025, and then the others fall into place as circumstances dictate – which may or not benefit them from an individual perspective. Are the Steelers suddenly a bona fide Super Bowl 60 threat? That will likely be primarily dictated by whatever version of Rodgers they're getting. But adding Ramsey and Smith also undoubtedly makes a team that's qualified for postseason four of the past five seasons more formidable. And even if Pittsburgh doesn't complete its 'Stairway to Seven' in 2025, the Steelers are starting to increasingly look like a team that could ambush one of the conference favorites – Kansas City, Buffalo, Baltimore – along the way while getting Tomlin that next playoff win he's been awaiting for nearly a decade. The presumed favorites to reacquire Ramsey's services – he played 3½ seasons in LA, starting in 2019, and was a key performer for the Super Bowl 56 champions in 2021 – a team that may have the best chance to dislodge the Eagles on the NFC side of the bracket in 2025 couldn't find a way to broker a reunion. Doesn't mean the defending NFC West titlists aren't still a clear and present danger to the reigning Super Bowl champions but sure seems like adding a familiar star like Ramsey would have nicely furthered the cause.
