Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is committed to creating elite chemistry with his wideouts—and early indications are that there's a huge jump on the way this season.
Following a strong conclusion to the 2024 season and a series of offseason workouts, Penix and standout wideout Drake London are building the foundation for what could be the NFL's most potent passing attack.
Michael Penix Jr. aims for breakout synergy with Drake London, Darnell Mooney, and Ray-Ray McCloud
Michael Penix MAKING PLAYS At Atlanta Falcons OTAs Practice - Drake London NASTY
In only his third week of full work with Atlanta Falcons starters during his previous season, Michael Penix Jr.
made some noise. One of the loudest was in Week 18 versus the Carolina Panthers. With three seconds remaining before halftime, Penix launched a laser of a back-shoulder pass to Drake London in tight coverage for a 20-yard touchdown — a glimpse of what their relationship could be.
Now solidly entrenched as Atlanta's opening-day quarterback in 2025, Penix is laser-sharp on building that trust with his receivers. London, who had a career-high season in 2024 with 100 catches, 1,271 yards, and nine touchdowns, is the focal point for that process.
Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson was effusive in his praise of the instant chemistry between Penix and London, calling them 'might've prepared a play once in practice and called it flawlessly in a game.' With Penix now fully taking over the offense, Robinson and the coaching staff are hopeful of more improvement.
Outside of London, Penix will also have a decent set of targets in Darnell Mooney and Ray-Ray McCloud III.
Mooney, a former Bears receiver, had five touchdowns and 992 yards last season. McCloud set personal highs with 62 catches and 686 yards. Tight end Kyle Pitts also emerged as a safety valve late in the season.
Wide receivers coach Ike Hilliard thinks Atlanta's depth is better than ever. Second-year players Casey Washington and Chris Blair are likely to battle for bigger roles after developing chemistry with Penix on the second team last season.
Veterans such as KhaDarel Hodge—who caught a game-winning clutch pass against Tampa Bay—and special teamers like Jamal Agnew bring experience and versatility.
New additions are undrafted standout San José State's Nick Nash, who set the FBS record at 16 receiving touchdowns in 2024. Also in the running are former CFL standout Makai Polk and former Giants wide receiver David Sills V, who timed 22 mph in recent team drills.
As the Falcons start offseason training, expectations for Penix and his receiving group are high. With Drake London's fifth-year option being exercised and exciting young players such as Bijan Robinson on board, Atlanta may be putting together a long-term offensive core.

If the offseason training is any measure, the Falcons are wagering that Michael Penix Jr.'s development and his synchronicity with London, Mooney, and Pitts will elevate Atlanta's offense from a work in progress to a serious playoff contender in 2025.

Shreyas Iyer shares insights on growth by leadership, says ‘Captaincy brings in a lot of maturity and responsibility'
Shreyas Iyer has emerged as a standout leader in Indian cricket, guiding Punjab Kings to their first IPL final in 11 years in 2025 and powering Sobo Mumbai Falcons to the semifinals of the T20 Mumbai League. Iyer has expressed about the positive impact of captaincy on him. His skills and composure under pressure have started discussions about his potential as India's next white-ball captain and even a Test call-up for the England series. At 30, Iyer's captaincy experience spans nearly a decade, starting at age 22. Looking back at his journey, Iyer said, 'Captaincy brings in a lot of maturity and responsibility.' Iyer's approach to leadership is rooted in staying present and focused. 'I just try to get into my zone and I try to do things which are there in front of me. I try to stay focused as much as possible, just to stay in the present, embrace the situation, embrace the crowd,' he explained. Iyer's captaincy for Punjab Kings in the 2025 IPL season was a defining moment, marking their first final appearance since 2014. His leadership was instrumental in navigating Punjab Kings through high-stakes matches. Beyond captaincy, Iyer scored over 600 runs in the IPL, proving his dual role as a reliable batsman and leader. Immediately after the IPL final on June 3, 2025, in Ahmedabad, Iyer returned to Mumbai to lead Sobo Mumbai Falcons in the T20 Mumbai League. Under Iyer's captaincy, the Falcons won four out of five matches, securing a semifinal spot. Iyer emphasized the demands of leadership, stating, 'You are always expected to perform and contribute in the best way possible for the team because whenever there is a hurdle or some kind of adversity you face as a team, they always come to the captain.' His consistent leadership in the IPL and Mumbai League has positioned him as a strong candidate for India's white-ball captaincy. Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir at the press conference ahead of India's tour of England gave his take on Iyer's late inclusion in the squad. "Look, anyone can be called. Anyone can be called if they are in good form," Gambhir recently said. "We could only pick 18, and the chairman-selector has already answered that question. For me, I think it is always about being open to people who are in good form and who can come and deliver," he added.

T20 Mumbai League: SoBo Mumbai Falcons ready to face NaMo Bandra Blasters in semis
Mumbai: Shreyas Iyer will be hoping to reach a second successive final when his side SoBo Mumbai Falcons takes on NaMo Bandra Blasters in the second semifinal of the T20 Mumbai League at the Wankhede Stadium here on Tuesday. A week back, Iyer had guided Punjab Kings to the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at Ahmedabad, where they finished runners-up to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Having already secured their spot in T20 Mumbai League semifinals, SoBo Mumbai Falcons warmed up for the knockout stage with a facile win against Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs in the last league stage match at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night. The five-wicket win – set up by Ishan Mulchandani's second fifty of the season and his crucial partnership with captain Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who took over from Shreyas Iyer for Sunday night's game – was SoBo Mumbai Falcons' fourth win in five league games. Eagle Thane Strikers were the only other team to win four league games. It means that the Falcons will take on NaMo Bandra Blasters in the second semifinal on Tuesday under lights at the Wankhede Stadium. The Falcons' troupe – led by Shreyas and Raghuvanshi and ably guided by Team Principal Vikrant Yeligati – has all the bases covered heading into the business of the tournament. As he showcased during his 99-run partnership with Raghuvanshi at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night, Mulchandani was in sublime touch. With 147 runs, he is the Falcons' highest run-getter of the tournament. Similarly, Siddharth Raut continued his exploits with the new ball as the seasoned pacer justified his billing as the leader of the pace pack. Add to that the fact that the allrounder duo of Vinayak Bhoir and Akash Parkar – who had a four-wicket haul against Aakash Tigers – are in top gear, underlines that the Falcons are a well-oiled machine that's raring to go at full throttle against the Blasters. Both Bhoir – the left-arm spinner and left-handed batter – and Parkar, the big-hitter and a right-arm pacer, have had at least one notable contribution both with the bat and the ball. While the seasoned duo has maintained the balance of the team, the Falcons have also unearthed the find of the tournament in Harsh Aghav. The young batter can dominate the bowlers with textbook shots. He will be hoping to withstand the big-match pressure at the Big W on Tuesday night. The winner of the first semifinal between Eagle Thane Strikers and MSC Maratha Royals – to be played on Tuesday afternoon – will be keeping a close watch on the Falcons' semifinal, just like scores of the Falcons' fan army that will be cheering the squad at the top of their voice.
