An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 on the Richter Scale struck Afghanistan on Sunday, a statement by the National Center for Seismology (NCS) said.
As per the NCS, the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10km, making it susceptible to aftershocks.'EQ of M: 3.8, On: 08/06/2025 07:53:19 IST, Lat: 36.61 N, Long: 71.36 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Afghanistan," the NCS said in a post on X.
Shallow earthquakes like this one are more dangerous than deeper ones due to their greater energy release closer to the Earth's surface.
his causes stronger ground shaking and increased damage to structures and casualties, compared to deeper earthquakes, which lose energy as they travel to the surface.
Earlier on Saturday, an earthquake of 4.2 magnitude jolted the region, NCS said.
NCS shared details of the earthquake on X, 'EQ of M: 4.2, On: 07/06/2025 01:05:55 IST, Lat: 36.50 N, Long: 67.82 E, Depth: 126 Km, Location: Afghanistan.'
Afghanistan has a history of powerful earthquakes, and the Hindu Kush Mountain range is a geologically active area where quakes occur every year, according to the Red Cross.
Afghanistan sits on numerous fault lines between the Indian and the Eurasian tectonic plates, with a fault line also running directly through Herat.
Its location on several active fault lines along the collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates makes it a seismically active region. These plates meet and collide, causing frequent seismic activity.
As per the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), Afghanistan remains highly vulnerable to natural disasters, including seasonal flooding, landslides and earthquakes.
These frequent earthquakes in Afghanistan cause damage to vulnerable communities, which are already grappling with decades of conflict and under-development and have left them with little resilience to cope with multiple simultaneous shocks, UNOCHA noted.

The early onset of the southwest monsoon brought continuous rainfall across southern and eastern India, contributing to this record. In a social media post on X, the IMD wrote, 'The average monthly rainfall for May 2025 over All-India (126.7 mm) and Central India (100.9 mm) was highest since 1901.' As per the Met Department, rainfall over the country in the month of May 2025 was 126.7 mm, which is 106 per cent more than its Long Period Average (LPA) of 61.4 mm. An official press release from the IMD reads, 'Rainfall over the country as a whole for the month of May 2025 was 126.7 mm, which is 106% more than its Long Period Average (LPA) of 61.4 mm...' 'The average monthly rainfall for May 2025 over All-India (126.7 mm) and Central India (100.9 mm) was the highest since 1901. While the monthly rainfall over South Peninsular India reached 199.7 mm, marking the second highest total since 1901, it was surpassed only by 201.4 mm recorded in 1990. Similarly, the monthly average rainfall over Northwest India (48.1 mm) was the 13th highest since 1901 and the 4th highest since 2001. The monthly rainfall over East & Northeast India region was 242.8 mm, which is the 29th highest since 1901 and the 4th highest since 2001,' it added. According to the IMD, during May, 25 subdivisions received large excess rainfall, five subdivisions received excess rain, and six subdivisions received normal rainfall. In May 2025, extremely heavy rainfall (>204.4 mm) was recorded along the West Coast, as well as in Assam and Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Mizoram, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Madhya Maharashtra, and South Interior Karnataka. As per the weather department, very heavy rainfall (115.6-204.4 mm) occurred in Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, East Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Marathwada, North Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Saurashtra and Kutch, Telangana, Vidarbha, and West Madhya Pradesh. Additionally, heavy rainfall events (64.5-115.5 mm) were observed across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Gujarat Region, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Lakshadweep, Odisha, Uttarakhand, and West Uttar Pradesh. The IMD stated that there were seven Western Disturbances (WDs) observed over the Indian region, which caused frequent occurrences of rain and thunderstorm activities accompanied by gusty winds and hailstorms across the Western Himalayan region, plains of Northwest and central India. In the month of May, most parts of India experience thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and activities at regular intervals. The average maximum, average minimum and mean temperature for the country as a whole during May were below normal. The release reads, 'The average maximum, average minimum and mean temperature for the country as a whole during May were 35.08oC, 24.07oC and 29.57oC respectively, against the normal of 36.60oC, 24.17oC and 30.38oC based on data of 1991-2020. Thus, the average maximum, average minimum and mean temperature were below normal with departure from normal of -1.52oC, -0.10oC and -0.81oC, respectively, for the country as a whole.' Notably, this year, the Southwest Monsoon set in over Kerala on May 24, eight days earlier than its normal onset date of June 1. (ANI)

Official Pakistani data shows that Pakistan released 15 per cent less water from its dams this week when compared to the same period last year, amid concerns that India's move to restrict water flow in western rivers can cause a serious shortage. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD On June 5, water release in Pakistan's Punjab fell to 124,000 cusecs from 144,000 cusecs the previous year, according to recent data. The Indus River at Tarbela Dam in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is at 1,465 meters, close to its dead level of 1,402 meters. At Chasma Dam in Punjab, also on the Indus, the water level is 644 meters, just above its dead level of 638 meters. Mangla Dam on the Jhelum River in Mirpur is at 1,163 meters, slightly above its dead level of 1,050 meters. The dead level is the lowest level where outlets are present to drain the water into reservoirs by gravity. Below the dead level, water pumps have to be used to drain the water. A top government source in Pakistan told Network 18 that situation in Pakistan was critical, especially for late Kharif season. 'The situation in Pakistan is clearly grave, especially for the late Kharif season from June till September," the source said. They added that the situation will only improve once Monsoon season arrives. 21% water shortage anticipated Pakistan expects a 21 per cent water shortage because of India's actions during the early Kharif season, which runs until June 10. The situation is especially serious at Marala in Sialkot, Punjab, where the Chenab River's average flow fell to 3,064 cusecs on June 5 from 26,645 cusecs on May 28, according to Pakistani data. Heatwave makes matters worse Pakistan is facing worsening conditions due to a severe heatwave forecast from June 8, with daytime temperatures expected to be 5 to 7°C above normal in central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Last month, Pakistan stated that a 'crisis had been created by Indian short supplies in Chenab River", leading to shortages in the Kharif season. Pakistan has called India's actions an 'act of war' and warned that water could spark the next conflict.
