The Only Woman in the Room, But the Strongest Presence: Joumana Karam

TECHx09-04-2025

Joumana Karam, Head of Marketing – MEA and New Business Development Manager – MEA at Acer, embodies a rare blend of strength, warmth, and humility. Growing up in war-torn Lebanon, she found solace in education, determined to carve a future beyond the hardships surrounding her. With resilience and an unshakable belief in her abilities, she navigated the male-dominated tech industry, proving that talent and perseverance know no gender. Today, she plays a pivotal role in driving innovation and growth at Acer while uplifting those around her, embodying the true spirit of dedication and excellence.
A Childhood Shaped by Resilience
Born and raised during the Lebanese civil war, Joumana's earliest memories are of a world overshadowed by conflict. Yet, amidst the chaos, she found solace in education. School was her sanctuary, a place where she excelled, always striving to be at the top of her class, despite being the youngest. Her mother, an avid reader, instilled in her a love for books, making them the most cherished gifts in their household.
'Being Lebanese meant mastering multiple languages at a very young age,' Joumana recalls. 'This early adaptability would later prove invaluable in my career.'
In a time when many girls faced educational barriers, Joumana was fortunate to be raised in a family that championed education for all. While the war raged on, studying by candlelight in bomb shelters became the norm. Education was not just an escape but a beacon of hope, a path to a better future.
Engineering a Future
Joumana's passion for mathematics and science led her to pursue engineering at the prestigious Lebanese University. Inspired by her maternal aunt and uncle, both engineers, she set her sights on the male-dominated world of telecommunications and electrical engineering.
Getting into the university was no small feat; from hundreds of applicants, only 100 were selected, and Joumana was among the top ten. As one of the few women in her field, she was often reminded of her minority status, but that never deterred her. She pursued a dual master's degree in electricity and electrical engineering while already setting her sights on the next frontier, the tech industry.
'In my final year, I knew IT was where the future lay. I wanted to be part of the innovations that would shape our world,' she says.
Breaking into Tech: The Lone Woman in the Room
Just a month after presenting her final university project, Joumana entered the workforce. She was the only woman in the room, a recurring theme in her career.
'At first, I was met with curiosity and skepticism. My work was scrutinized more than my male counterparts. But rather than being discouraged, I let my work speak louder than words,' she explains.
After a challenging first year, she landed a role in a technical IT department, once again as the only female. But this time, she had found a clear path for growth. Over the years, she witnessed firsthand the rapid evolution of the tech industry, from bulky desktops to sleek, high-performance laptops, the rise of the internet, social media, and now, the era of Artificial Intelligence.
Challenges, Setbacks, and the Mindset of Growth
Navigating a male-dominated industry came with its share of obstacles. There were moments when her voice wasn't heard, when she was labeled as 'too aggressive,' and when she faced outright negativity. But Joumana never backed down.
'Whenever my voice was ignored, I let my results do the talking. Whenever my decisions were questioned, I let data and analysis prove my point. And when faced with negativity, I responded with positivity and problem-solving,' she shares.
Her career trajectory is a testament to resilience. From an IT technician to a call center agent, from IT management to sales and marketing leadership, Joumana climbed the ranks, holding key positions in Lebanon and the UAE. Today, she is no longer the only woman in the room, she remains part of the minority.
Leading at Acer: A Dual Role of Strategy and Innovation
Currently, Joumana Karam holds a dual leadership role at Acer, overseeing marketing across the Middle East and Africa while also driving new business development.
As Head of Marketing – MEA, she orchestrates regional marketing strategies, digital and retail campaigns, influencer relations, and PR initiatives. She is also instrumental in product positioning and brand storytelling, ensuring Acer's innovations reach the right audiences.
In her Business Development role, she drives the expansion of Acer's non-PC product lineup, including e-mobility solutions, connectivity devices, and power solutions.
Since joining Acer in 2006, she has worn many hats, achieving multiple milestones and breaking barriers in the process. Yet, for her, success isn't just about numbers and targets—it's about the people she leads and inspires.
'My greatest reward is seeing my team grow. The joy on their faces after completing a challenge, whether small or big, is what keeps me motivated,' she says.
A Message to Women in Tech
For women aspiring to enter or grow in the tech industry, Joumana has a clear message:
'Technology is an ever-evolving field, and the challenges women face here are no different than in any other industry. There will be good managers and bad ones, opportunities and setbacks. The key is to listen, learn, adapt, and most importantly—trust your own voice. Never let self-doubt hold you back. Encourage young women to embrace STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). And when you enter a room, speak up. You belong there.'
Joumana Karam's journey is not just about breaking barriers, it's about redefining them. From a childhood marked by war to a career at the forefront of technological transformation, she continues to inspire the next generation of women in tech, proving that resilience, ambition, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge can pave the way to success.

Middle East & Africa peports strong mishandled bag numbers as global air travel hits records

SITA report shows the Middle East & Africa reported one of the lowest total number of mishandled bags globally in 2024, reflecting the positive impact of regional investments in smart airport infrastructure and modernizing baggage solutions GENEVA – The Middle East & Africa's air transport sector kept pace with global passenger surges in 2024, achieving remarkable baggage results despite increasing system demands. According to the newly released SITA Baggage IT Insights 2025, the region maintained one of the world's strongest performances, reporting 6.02 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers, slightly up from 4.5 in 2023, but still among the best worldwide. The global picture also tells a story of progress. Despite an 8.2% increase in worldwide traffic in 2024, the overall mishandling rate dropped to 6.3 bags per 1,000 passengers, down from 6.9 the previous year and 67% lower than in 2007. The total number of mishandled bags decreased to 33.4 million, compared to 33.8 million the previous year. Of the 33.4 million mishandled bags, over 66% (22 million) were resolved and closed in SITA WorldTracer® within 48 hours, underscoring the industry's ability to quickly reunite passengers with their luggage. Specifically, out of the 22 million, 25% were resolved within 12 hours, 38% within 24 hours, and another 38% within 48 hours. But while these results show clear improvement, baggage mishandling still cost the industry an estimated $5 billion in 2024 and passengers are increasingly expecting more from the industry. The costs, from courier returns and customer service to claims handling and lost productivity, highlight the urgency of continued investment in real-time, automated, and data-driven baggage systems. 'In air transport, transformation isn't a phase, it's the norm. The industry is constantly evolving, driven by technology, passenger expectations, and global change.' said David Lavorel, CEO of SITA. 'We've seen a radical shift with automation and the widespread use of real-time tracking. Passengers now expect their baggage experience to be as easy and transparent as using a rideshare or delivery app. It's no longer just about moving bags, it's about delivering a smooth, connected journey. Airlines are ready to tap into technology that improves the passenger experience while keeping costs down and being simple to roll out. Together with our partners, we're reimagining baggage handling to give passengers full visibility and control from departure to arrival, giving them peace of mind and making travel simpler and better." Tech maturity, not experimentation Airports and airlines are now handling greater baggage volumes with more precision. Real-time tracking, AI-powered analytics, and self-service solutions are no longer experimental, they are becoming standard and they are clearly having an effect. This shows the real impact of investing in smart, data-driven baggage systems. In 2024, 42% of passengers had access to real-time baggage updates, up from 38% the year before. Nearly half of travelers say mobile tracking would boost their confidence in checking in a bag, and 38% value the addition of digital ID tags. Airlines have responded by prioritizing visibility across the baggage journey. Currently, 66% offer automated bag drop, and another 16% plan to by 2027. On the airport side, 65% plan to roll out biometric self-service bag drop by the same year. A partnership between tech and trust One of the standout innovations in 2024 was the integration of Apple's Share Item Location feature with SITA WorldTracer®. Passengers can share the location of their Apple AirTag with airlines, allowing quicker baggage recovery. British Airways, Lufthansa, Qantas, Cathay, and Virgin Atlantic are among the adopters. This integration also powers WorldTracers Auto Reflight, which automatically reflights bags on the original bag tag, identifies the cause of mishandling, and begins resolution with no human intervention required. Where most bags go missing and how the industry is responding Delayed bags remain the most common issue, accounting for 74% of mishandled baggage, down from 80% in the previous year. Lost or stolen bags made up 8%, while damaged or pilfered bags increased to 18%, up from 15% in 2023. Transfer mishandling was the biggest contributor at 41%, showing improvement from 46% the previous year. Tagging or ticketing errors, security issues, and similar factors rose slightly to 17% (up 3 percentage points), while loading failures remained steady at 16%. Operational issues such as customs delays, weather, or capacity constraints increased to 10%, up from 8%. 'We're making progress, but baggage still causes stress,' said Nicole Hogg, Director of Baggage at SITA. 'Passengers want reassurance. The future of baggage is rapidly evolving with automation, computer vision, and mobile tools, we're making the experience much more reliable.' New standards aim to cut mishandling further In 2025, the air transport industry approved the new Modern Baggage Messaging (MBM) standard. Designed to enhance data quality, MBM Version 2 is expected to reduce mishandling by another 5%. These improvements build on IATA Resolution 753, which mandates baggage tracking at four key stages. The focus now is on using shared data to predict and prevent issues, not just report them. Baggage as a service, not a challenge Airports like Red Sea International in Saudi Arabia are already implementing next-generation baggage solutions, including off-airport check-in and real-time tracking, powered by SITA Bag Journey. 'Every bag matters,' Hogg added. 'This isn't just about reducing errors. It's about creating trust in the journey and the technology is clearly making that possible.' The SITA Baggage IT Insights 2025 report reflects the views and data of 280 airlines and IATA passenger traffic. SITA applies a weighting system, based on IATA passenger traffic statistics, to its WorldTracer® data to calculate the baggage mishandling rates. Lebanon's Middle East Airlines considers setting up low-cost arm amid 'new phase' of growth

Lebanon's Middle East Airlines (MEA) is studying setting up a low-cost carrier aimed at serving destinations in the Middle East and Europe, as the country plans to construct a second terminal in Beirut airport. The budget airline would be a wholly-owned subsidiary of the wider MEA group but fully independent, Mohamad El Hout, MEA chairman, told The National. 'We are thinking of preparing within the next two years to launch a low-cost airline under MEA, starting with four aircraft,' he said. 'This depends on finding aircraft we can receive, the search is ongoing. 'A lot of airlines now have a low-cost carrier … several destinations require low-cost service, rather than the configuration we have in our fleet now.' The airline has studied the market and sees demand for low-cost flights to destinations in Europe and the Middle East, he said, pointing to Germany, Denmark and Egypt as examples. Lebanon's flag carrier was a standout in the airline industry when it became the only remaining commercial carrier to continue operating out of Beirut airport amid intensified Israeli attacks in the country last year. Entering a 'new phase' However, MEA's chairman said the airline is now turning a corner and embracing a new era of growth. 'We were in one phase, and now we're moving into a new phase,' he said, pointing to the UAE lifting a travel ban on Emirati citizens flying to Lebanon. While Israeli attacks in Lebanon are still ongoing, they are 'targeted and precise' rather than wider military operations. 'They do not impact the significant growth in passenger traffic that we are seeing this month,' Mr El Hout said. The airline is forecasting year-on-year growth of 10 per cent to 15 per cent in the second half of 2025, he added. In terms of its fleet, MEA has an order book of nine aircraft. Six of these are scheduled to be delivered in 2026, two in 2027 and one in 2028. MEA expects to receive four of the extra-long range Airbus A321 XLR aircraft next year. 'The narrowbody aircraft has the capability to fly for nine hours and this will allow us to open new markets, in Africa particularly,' he said. It will also receive two Airbus A330 Neo wide-body aircraft to replace older jets. The airline is also seeking four A320 Neos but the market supply for jets is 'tight' and Airbus' backlog stretches to five years, he said, adding that the plane lessors have some availability. Once these A320 Neo narrowbodies are secured, the airline can proceed with its plans for a low-cost arm, Mr El Hout said. Like the rest of the airline industry, MEA is facing delayed aircraft deliveries amid industry-wide supply chain bottlenecks. Airbus planes that it will receive next year should have been delivered in 2023, Mr El Hout said. 'There are frustrations but my duty is to find solutions,' he said. New terminal at Beirut airport Plans are also under way to construct a second terminal at Rafic Hariri International Airport, MEA's home hub. The master plan, which is being developed by Dar Al Handasah in Beirut, calls for a second terminal with a capacity of five million passengers, he said. The project may be developed through a public-private partnership (PPP). 'The Lebanese government is preparing a book of terms for the project and MEA is very interested in this new terminal, especially as it can be a dedicated terminal for the operations of the airline, its partners and SkyTeam [alliance member airlines],' he said. 'It will be equipped and operated in a very modern way, with state-of-the-art technology for processing passengers without the need for passports, which is what we see in other new airports.' The master plan for the second terminal calls for eight piers or 'fingers' to accommodate narrow-body aircraft and three piers for wide-body aircraft, making a total of 11 piers, he said. The master plan is completed and the next step will include issuing a request for proposals (RFP). The second terminal will provide sufficient capacity to meet Lebanon's air travel requirements for several years ahead. 'We expect that phase one of this project will be enough for the next 10 to 15 years,' Mr El Hout said. 'If there is more stability, and more movements, there is a plan for phase two to accommodate 8 million passengers.' The project is estimated to cost between $400 million and $500 million, the MEA chairman said. 'There is interest, not just from foreign investors, but Lebanese as well,' he said. 'It's a successful project. We've had discussions with several people and we already see the interest.' Last month, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced that the master plan for a second international airport in the country will be unveiled within a month, pledging to open the project to foreign investors. 'The master plan for the new airport, the Rene Mouawad Airport in Qlayaat, will be presented in the coming weeks – in less than a month,' he said in May. Speaking on Tuesday at a conference in downtown Beirut, the prime minister said: 'We are advancing plans to rebrand and launch a second international airport. The second airport could play a strategic role in facilitating cargo movement and affordable travel.' He was speaking at a conference organised by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Ciarb) called 'Rebuilding Lebanon: Investment framework, business opportunities, and dispute resolution'.
