Considering solar for your business? Here's what you need to know

A growing number of businesses are turning to solar power to help offset energy costs and be good environmental stewards.
As Pennsylvania's largest electric and natural gas provider, PECO has both the financial incentives and technical expertise to help its businesses large and small begin converting sunlight into electricity. By combining the company's incentives with federal or state tax credits, businesses can recover some of the up-front cost of the solar energy system to shorten the payback period.
'The increasing cost of doing business and growing sustainability trends, like decarbonization and vehicle electrification, are major factors contributing to solar adoption in the business community,' said Brett Riley, senior energy efficiency program manager for PECO. 'Companies also have a growing interest in sustainable business practices and alternative energy commitments. Going solar could also help advance their energy-efficiency goals.'
According to Riley, trade allies bring expertise to the program and facilitate the completion of projects. These contractors are trained in the PECO Ways to Save solutions and incentives, including solar power. Working with a trade ally is the best way to ensure a project qualifies for PECO financial incentives.
'We've developed relationships with a wide variety of contractors and service providers in our territory who are trained to perform energy efficiency work on behalf of our program,' Riley said. 'When working with a trade ally, our customers can be sure they are the most qualified provider to bring these projects to life.'
Helping customers transition to cleaner energy options is a key priority in PECO's Path to Clean. By supporting customers and communities in their climate goals, PECO is powering the Greater Philadelphia Region's transition to a cleaner energy future. This can be seen in the recent work that PECO completed with a local school district serving more than 5,000 K-12 students to make significant upgrades to its buildings. Improvements included fixing and upgrading solar panel systems on the middle and high school roofs, which now generate an estimated 30 percent of the energy needed for the buildings.
'Solar is a great option to offset even a portion of your electric needs. It doesn't matter how big or small a building is,' Riley said. 'All types of businesses and organizations are using solar to boost energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.'
Businesses with land can do even more. By installing a large solar array, commercial customers could create their own solar power plant, which can be an additional source of revenue.
Getting started with solar
Solar is part of PECO's energy-efficiency program designed to help businesses save on their operating costs by also improving interior and exterior lighting, upgrading HVAC equipment and increasing the efficiency of compressed air systems.
There is a four-step process for working with PECO to uncover energy-savings opportunities.
A solar contractor submits the interconnection service agreement to PECO's Green Power Connect interconnection team and installs the solar system.
Once the system is in service and the contractor receives 'permission to operate,' the contractor submits the pre-approval application with the PECO Ways to Save program.
A PECO engineer collects proper documentation plus two-to-three months of data to verify solar production.
The customer receives the incentive, which is $0.10/kWh of net electric production over a one-year period.
As a first step, Riley recommends completing this form or connecting with a PECO representative at 844-424-9728.
By taking advantage of financial incentives for reducing energy use by going solar, businesses can not only save money but also play an important role in building a sustainable future.

Springfield Rep. Alex Riley launches bid for Speaker of the Missouri House

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Local state representative Alex Riley announced he will be running to become the next Speaker of the Missouri House of Representatives. Riley is vying to replace the current speaker, Representative Jon Patterson (R-Lee's Summit), who will be term-limited out of office by 2026. The speaker of the Missouri House is elected by fellow House members. Riley was first elected to the Missouri House in 2020 for District 134, which encompasses much of southern Greene County. In 2023, Riley was appointed as the House Majority Leader, becoming the first elected official from Springfield in 100 years to serve that role. If elected, he will become only the second Speaker of the House from Springfield in state history. Springfield residents give feedback on Sunshine Street corridor study 'It is my goal to restore legislative authority to the people's elected representatives to address real issues facing Missouri – like reforming the state's broken initiative petition process, addressing crime and public safety, building our economy, improving education outcomes for our state's kids, and providing meaningful tax relief to hard-working Missourians,' Riley stated in a press release. In addition to being a state representative, Riley also practices law at Healy Law Offices in Springfield and received a law degree from the Southern Illinois University School of Law. Hyperfine trading spiked on algorithms caching ‘AI,' says B. Riley

B. Riley analyst Yuan Zhi reiterates a Buy rating on Hyperfine (HYPR) with a $1 price target after the company's premium Swoop received FDA 510k approval weeks ahead of schedule. The new next-generation MRI system includes a new scanner and Optive artificial intelligence software, producing the highest level of image quality and uniformity, the analyst tells investors in a research note. The firm says Hyperfine kept the hardware development confidential up until yesterday, so it is likely not on many investor radars. Riley points out the trading volume of Hyperfine on Monday was greater than 100M shares, more than the entire float. This trading abnormality could be related to trading algorithms catching the keyword 'AI,' the firm contends. Pat Riley Sends Strong Message to Jimmy Butler on Friday

The 2024–25 Miami Heat season will be remembered more for the drama than the basketball. Star forward Jimmy Butler was suspended three times for "conduct detrimental to the team" and for "intentionally withholding services," a situation that quickly spiraled into a full-blown distraction. Tension had been building since the offseason, when Butler didn't receive the contract extension he wanted from team president Pat Riley. From that point on, the relationship between Butler and the organization seemed beyond repair. Advertisement Meanwhile, the constant lineup changes left the rest of the roster scrambling to find consistency on a nightly basis. Riley ended up trading Butler to the Golden State Warriors at the NBA trade deadline in a deal that brought the Heat Andrew Wiggins, Kyle Anderson, Davion Mitchell (via the Toronto Raptors), and a first-round pick. On Friday, Riley spoke to the media and had a message for Butler, saying he wishes him well and hopes "deep down in his heart somewhere, he wishes us well too." "I've been through those kinds of situations before, even with this team, a couple times, uh, and so it's over," Riley said. "He's done. I wish him well, good luck to him, and I hope deep down in his heart somewhere, he wishes us well too." Their run didn't last long—the Cleveland Cavaliers swept them in the first round. Butler and the Warriors are now tied 1-1 in a second-round playoff series.
