What Each PWHL Team Is Watching For During the World Championship

Yahoo18-04-2025

The Women's World Championships are entering into the medal round in Czechia and soon the PWHL will resume with only three games remaining for all six PWHL teams.
Here's what each team is keeping an eye on as the tournament play reaches its crucial stages.
No doubt the Victoire are watching the line of Poulin, Gardiner, and Stacey shine as a unit for Canada and show that they can step up under pressure, which they'll need to do in the playoffs. But the biggest focus for the team is the performance and return to form for goaltender Ann Renee Desbiens. She's still the #1 Canadian goalie and it will be important that she is healthy and at the top of her game.
Kristen Campbell has played well in her first game action for Canada at the World Championship, which is encouraging for Toronto. They have to be holding their breath that Campbell stays healthy since backup Raygan Kirk is currently on LTIR. It's also been worth noting the play of Hayley Scamurra for the U.S. since her game will likely thrive in the playoffs where checking is tighter.
Hilary Knight, Megan Keller, and Aerin Frankel have simply continued their reliable games so far in the WWC. The Fleet are looking for defender Daniela Pejsova to find some confidence while playing with Czechia in her home country, since she's struggled to find a consistent role with Boston and has even played some minutes at forward. They could use her rugged game in the playoffs.
With coach Carla MacLeod and the Czech contingent playing well and gaining momentum, the Charge are hoping that Katerina Mrazova remains healthy so she can be a contributor in the final three games to clinch a playoff spot. Ronja Savolainen has been outstanding defensively and offensively for Finland, and a possible injury in the quarterfinal game vs. Sweden could be a huge factor for Ottawa.
A good result for Team USA would boost the Frost's stars as they push to regain their place in the top four. Kelly Pannek has had a great tournament. If Grace Zumwinkle and Taylor Heise step up and deliver, it would be a boost for Minnesota who desperately need their scoring. The team's two goalies stayed home for the break and have either polished some of their rough spots, or might need to shake off some rust to help get crucial points in the last three games.
The Sirens' two superstars, Alex Carpenter and Sarah Fillier, have been playing huge roles for their teams, so no surprises there. Noora Tulus appears very comfortable with Finland, where she returned to a larger scoring and power play role. It appears that she has more to give, so a strong finish in the final games with New York would at least bode well for a return to form next season if the team doesn't pull off a miracle and qualify for the playoffs.

MMA Junkie's Knockout of the Month for May: Barriault puts Silva on a stretcher

MMA Junkie's Knockout of the Month for May: Barriault puts Silva on a stretcher With another action-packed month of MMA in the books, MMA Junkie looks at the best knockouts from May 2025: Here are the five nominees, listed in chronological order, and winner of MMA Junkie's Knockout of the Month award for May. At the bottom of the post, let us know if we got it right by voting for your choice. Nominee: Aleksandr Maslov def. Yuriy Fedorov at ACA 186 After facing some early adversity in their heavyweight bout, Alexandr Maslov got the last laugh against Yuriy Fedorov. In a heated exchange early in the second round, Maslov (12-1) threw a multi-punch combination at Fedorov (10-7), one of which was a right hook that landed clean to the chin and immediately send him folded to the canvas unconscious. Nominee: Connor Hughes def. Sebastien Di Franco at 2025 PFL Europe 1 The devastating knockout power of Connor Hughes was felt by Sebastien Di Franco when the pair met in a lightweight showdown. At roughly the midway point of the fight, Hughes (11-2) took advantage of poor movement from Di Franco (10-4) with a clean punch that instantly knocked him out. No follow-up shots were needed with Di Franco's lifeless body falling and smacking his head off the canvas. Nominee: Mike Malott def. Charles Radtke at UFC 315 Mike Malott gave the Canadian crowd plenty to cheer about – especially after Charles Radtke talked trash on the country prior to their welterweight bout. A "Proper" left hook from Malott (12-2-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) spelled the beginning of the end for Radtke (10-5 MMA, 3-2 UFC). Malott found the chin early in Round 2 with the cracking shot, leading to the finish seconds later after hard, accurate follow-up punches. Nominee: Jared Gordon def. Thiago Moises at UFC Fight Night 256 Jared Gordon scored the biggest highlight reel win of his octagon tenure so far when he knocked Thiago Moises out cold. After getting a takedown early in the lightweight bout, the action returned to its feet where Gordon (21-7 MMA, 9-6 UFC) landed a brutal right hand that floored Moises (19-9 MMA, 8-7 UFC). He followed up with a few shots on the ground to seal the deal. Nominee: Dustin Jacoby def. Bruno Lopes at UFC on ESPN 68 Dustin Jacoby prioritized violence over technique, and it paid off against Bruno Lopes. Jacoby (21-9-1 MMA, 9-6-1 UFC) knocked out Bruno Lopes (14-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) with a swarming attack for a stoppage just minutes into the opening round of the light heavyweight bout. The winner: Marc-Andre Barriault def. Bruno Silva at UFC 315 Marc-Andre Barriault finished Bruno Silva in scary fashion at UFC 315. Barriault (17-9 MMA, 6-8 UFC) unleashed an array of elbows in the clinch to knock out Silva (23-13 MMA, 4-7 UFC) at the 1:27 mark of Round 1 in their middleweight bout. Silva was rendered unconscious after being finished by an emotional Barriault and had to be stretchered out. With the win, Canada's Barriault snapped a three-fight losing skid. Meanwhile, Silva has now lost five in a row, and seven of his past eight fights. Cast Your Vote!

Oilers 'Inquired' About $66 Million Goalie Before Trade Deadline

Oilers 'Inquired' About $66 Million Goalie Before Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Edmonton Oilers are back in the Stanley Cup Final for the second straight year, earning their rematch with the Florida Panthers following a 6-3 Game 5 win over the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference finals. Advertisement The victory capped a dominant 12-2 stretch for the Oilers, who enter the rematch against Florida with momentum, the experience of last year's loss, and a goaltender playing the best hockey of his postseason career. Stuart Skinner has steadied Edmonton's net after early playoff struggles, taking over Calvin Pickard once the latter went down injured, and recording three shutouts with a .904 save percentage in 10 postseason appearances. Skinner's rise, however, came after a season filled with scrutiny, one that nearly led the Oilers to make a major change in goal, according to NHL insider David Pagnotta. Pagnotta reported that Edmonton explored a potential trade for Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman earlier this year, even after the netminder signed a long-term extension with Boston. Advertisement "Edmonton inquired about Jeremy Swayman this season, well after he signed his deal with Boston," Pagnotta wrote. "But with how much Stuart Skinner gets criticized, Stu seems to be doing fine in net for the Oilers." Swayman signed an eight-year, $66 million contract right before the start of the season and finished the year with a .892 save percentage, allowing 3.11 goals-against on average in 58 games. Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner (74) reacts against the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Miron-Imagn Images Despite a down year in Boston compared to his prior level of play, Swayman's resume and playoff experience drew league-wide interest, including from Edmonton. The Oilers' decision to stick with Skinner ultimately paid off for the Canadian franchise, as Edmonton is positioned to challenge for its first Stanley Cup since 1990. Advertisement Game 1 of the finals is set for puck-drop at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Wednesday, June 4 at 8 p.m. ET. Lance Stroll to miss Spanish GP due to pain in hand and wrist

MONTMELO, Spain (AP) — Aston Martin says that Canadian driver Lance Stroll won't race in the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday due to pain in his hand and wrist. Aston Martin won't be able to replace Stroll since he qualified for the race. That means Fernando Alonso will be the only driver in an emerald green car. The team did not specify which hand was hurting Stroll. It said that he had been 'experiencing pain in his hand and wrist' for six weeks and that doctors believe it is related to a medical procedure he underwent in 2023 following a cycling accident to treat fractures and a broken toe.
