Lewis Hamilton entering ‘critical' phase of F1 season after ‘concerning' Ferrari start
Karun Chandhok believes Lewis Hamilton is entering a 'critical' period of the season after a disappointing start to life at Ferrari. Aside from his sprint victory in China, seven-time world champion Hamilton has not finished in the top three. His best grand prix result came in Imola last month, where he finished fourth, and he came home an underwhelming sixth last time out in Spain. In contrast, Hamilton's teammate Charles Leclerc has finished on the podium in the last two races and is 23 points ahead of the Brit going into round 10 in Canada this weekend. Ex- F1 driver Chandhok, who works as a pundit for Sky Sports, believes Hamilton's team of engineers should be 'concerned' and looking at changing the set-up of the temperamental SF-25 car to suit the British driver. "It's starting to get a bit critical,' Chandhok said of Hamilton's season, on the latest episode of the Sky Sports F1 podcast. 'We're coming into the second third of the season now, and he's not finding the rhythm. 'He's not finding consistency where week in, week out, he's in a happy place of the car. In Imola, he was woeful in qualifying, then suddenly the car's brilliant in the race. In Monaco, he wasn't quite there. He was a chunk behind Charles throughout. 'There's got to be a degree of concern creeping in. When you look at Spain, the fact that Charles overtook him and drove away from him quite comfortably, even before we go into the different tyres and stuff later on. "If I was on the Lewis side of the garage, I would be concerned. We are nearly at halfway through the year now, we need to start understanding whether this a fundamental issue, that we need to change the direction of the set-up of the car.' Despite his struggles, Chandhok believes the 40-year-old still has what it takes to win races, if given the machinery to do so. "I'm not disputing that he's still got the ability… he clearly does,' he added. 'He's able to win races, we saw that in China, but they need to find a sweet spot for him, where every weekend he knows what he's got, and they haven't got that. 'He's still having too many good days and bad days. The fluctuations are too much." Hamilton will be eyeing his first podium of the year this weekend in Montreal, where he claimed his first F1 victory back in 2007. He is currently a whopping 115 points off championship leader Oscar Piastri.

Barcelona are prepared to go 'all out' to sign Liverpool star this summer - despite Premier League champions already 'rejecting' an approach
Barcelona are readying themselves to go 'all out' to sign Liverpool winger Luis Diaz during the summer, according to reports. The winger's future is uncertain as he enters the final two years of his deal and Mail Sport understands he is due to discuss the situation with club chiefs. Diaz has enjoyed a successful time at Anfield since joining from Porto midway through the 2021-22 season, winning five trophies and scoring 41 goals. Liverpool rejected an approach from Barca and are seemingly happy to let him run his contract down and leave on a free, The Athletic has reported. However, new reports from Spain now claim that the Catalan giants will push forward for a move this summer as they look to bolster their attacking depth. According to Mundo Deportivo, both Diaz and Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams have caught the attention of Hansi Flick's side as they head into the window but, due to the latter's immense contract at his current club, Diaz is the more viable option. Liverpool are open to selling the 28-year-old provided the price is right and they can source an adequate replacement. Diaz blew hot and cold this season but still had a grand impact overall, scoring 17 goals and providing eight assists in 50 appearances as Liverpool won the Premier League. Dias, speaking on international duty with Colombia earlier in the week, did not commit his future either way. 'I'm very happy at Liverpool,' he said. 'They've treated me well since the first day. 'We're talking with other clubs. It's the transfer window, it's normal. If Liverpool renews my contract, or if I have to stay the two years I have left, I'll be happy. It's up to them.' His partner, Gera Ponce, posted an emotional message on Instagram which some fans took as a farewell message. On the other hand, it could just be interpreted as them insisting on their love for the club. 'From the first day we arrived, we felt first hand what it means to be a part of this club,' she wrote. 'We knew the slogan was "You'll Never Walk Alone", but to hear them sing it with so much passion, support us every moment and show such unconditional love... confirmed to us that here you never walk alone. Speaking to Telemundo last month Diaz insisted he was happy at Anfield and relaxed about his contract situation. 'Yes, happy. From the first day I arrived, I've always been happy, calm, enjoying the football played at this great team. 'We'll be talking about it, we'll talk about it (about the renewal). For me, I would stay however many years it takes, it also depends on the club, everything. 'These are details that are sorted out separately. Very calm, I'm happy and enjoying the Premier League.'

Nevin picks out the best deals so far
The mini transfer window has been interesting with some intriguing stories. Matheus Cunha to Manchester United seems to make some sense, certainly more that many of their transfer deals in the past few years. At least Cunha has proved he can do it in the Premier Delap had his pick of a few clubs because of his affordable £30 million buyout fee. Well done to the agent who got that written into his contract. Trent Alexander-Arnold is older but still big news. However, I do not think he is the most important deal done in this window thus was not too much fanfare following Dean Huijsen's £50million move from Bournemouth to Real Madrid but it is hard to imagine any other transferred player having the same long-term might have been tempted by him as the eventual replacement for Virgil van Dijk, but then Huijsen was unlikely to turn down Real, having already elected to represent Spain over his birth nation, the 20-year-old is a class act. It is very unusual for such a young centre-back to be so assured and mature. My suspicion has always been that he will be an enduring world star if he steers clear of major injuries. Trent grabbed much more attention in the short term, but Dean is more likely to be the long-term superstar Galactico in up to read more from Pat Nevin in his Football Extra newsletter
