Sze Fei-Izzuddin need Malaysia Masters title to become world No. 1

KUALA LUMPUR: Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani are on the brink of becoming world No. 1 in men's doubles, but only if top-ranked Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen suffer an early exit at the Malaysia Masters.
The Danish pair, currently ranked world No. 1 and defending champions, eased into the second round at the Axiata Arena with a commanding 21-10, 21-17 win over China's world No. 29 Xie Hao Nan-Zeng Wei Han.
Next up for Astrup-Rasmussen is a clash against Malaysia's world No. 39 Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong on Thursday.
Despite the threat from world No. 2 Sze Fei-Izzuddin, the Danes remain confident they will retain their top ranking next week unless the Malaysians lift the title on home soil.
Second seeds Sze Fei-Izzuddin also reached the second round by overcoming world No. 48 Eloi Adams-Leo Rossi of France 21-16, 21-13.
The Malaysians will face Taiwan's world No. 38 Chen Zhi Ray-Lin Yu Chieh on Thursday.
Astrup-Rasmussen have struggled this season, suffering early exits at the Malaysia Open, India Open and All England.
This is a sharp contrast to their red-hot 2024 campaign, which saw them win three titles, including the World Tour Finals and land five podium finishes that catapulted them to world No. 1.
"We remain humble. There are many strong pairs out there, and our form hasn't been the best," said Astrup, 33, on Tuesday.
"We're working hard to get back to top form. We're still world No. 1, so obviously, we can still play badminton. That's why we continue to believe in ourselves despite recent results."
The pair's form has also been hampered by Rasmussen's battle with tennis elbow in his playing arm.
"For the past four or five months, I've been dealing with tennis elbow, which made training and competing very difficult," said the 36-year-old.
"But we're on the other side of the injury now, and I believe we'll be back to our best soon."
The Danes have faced Hang Yee-Eng Cheong once before - at the 2021 Swiss Open - winning 21-17, 16-21, 21-13.

Cklamovski fires up team to work harder after beating Vietnam for first time in 11 years

Going all out: Malaysia's Rodrigo Holgado heading the ball during their match against Vietnam at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil. — Bernama PETALING JAYA: Results don't come without action, and national football team head coach Peter Cklamovski knows work is never done if they are to keep Malaysia's Asian Cup dreams alive. Harimau Malaya delivered a powerful performance against Vietnam on home turf in their 2027 Asian Cup third round qualifiers, thrashing their opponents 4-0 at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday. Cklamovski hailed his players' performance in front of 61,512 fans, as Malaysia got past their first tough fixture in the group against Vietnam to keep their Asian Cup dreams burning strong. 'Dream for it, because we've got that dream, without a doubt. We see the commitment the players have for that dream. 'We don't just think about it, but we have to do it by action, every day. And the performance the players put in is a reflection of what I see every day. 'I see a committed group of players hungry to build a team mentality that will make Malaysians proud. I'm very proud of the players,' he said. Cklamovski was quick to field fresh legs in the squad, giving playing minutes to newly arrived heritage players Joao Figueiredo, Rodrigo Holgado, Facundo Garces, Jon Irazabal, and Imanol Machuca. And they were quick to deliver. Figueiredo was first to break the deadlock in the 49th minute, followed by Holgado in the 58th. Seasoned heritage players La'vere Corbin-Ong and Dion Cools sealed the win in the 66th and 88th minutes, respectively. Malaysia also ended their 11-year winless streak against Vietnam as their last victory over the Golden Star Warriors was at the 2014 AFF Cup, when Harimau Malaya won 5-4 in the semi-final. Cklamovski was thrilled with his team, as they now sit top of Group F, three points clear of Vietnam in second, while Laos are in third with one win and Nepal remain without a point. 'I thought the first half was good, we probably could have gotten in front but it was important that we stayed focused in the second half. 'We stayed disciplined and worked hard as a team. That's important because we don't just rely on one player but 11, regardless of who is out there,' he said. Although the dream to qualify for Saudi Arabia stays alive, Cklamovski reminded the team that the win against Vietnam is just a small step in their long journey. 'We can dream, but we have to recover, analyse the game, and then get on to the next one. 'We just got three points from the game, that's all. We've got more work to do and more steps to take,' he said. Harimau Malaya will play their next qualifier match against Laos on Oct 9.

Cklamovski's men don't just dream, they work very hard

KUALA LUMPUR: The man from Down Under has put Malaysia on a high. And Australian coach Peter Cklamovski feels that the Asian Cup qualification is not just a dream as Malaysia now have the performance to back it up. Malaysia have surged to the top of Group F after demolishing Vietnam 4-0 at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday. Cklamovski's men, who beat Nepal 2-0 in their group opener in March, are well on course to qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia. Cklamovski said in the post-match press conference: "We got that dream, without a doubt, and you saw the commitment the players have for that. "We don't just think about it, we have to do it by action, and we have to do it by action every day, and that performance is a reflection of what I see every day from May 19, phase one, through to phase two, and then to the final phase. "I see a committed group of players hungry to build a team mentality that will make Malaysians proud, and tonight's a reflection of that. "To recover, we have to analyse this game, and then we get on to the next one. We've just got three points, that's all. "We've got more work to do, and we've got more steps to take to performance. Again, you'll hear me say it a lot, because that's everything that we think and talk about, because it's not about one player, it's about 11 players. We have 11 captains on the field, whoever plays. "We have 30 players training hard, being leaders in training. That's a mentality that will grow. We've got more work to do, physically improving, football's improving, and we've got more work to do." After seeing Malaysia end an 11-year barren record against Southeast Asia big guns Vietnam, Cklamovski said: "There's a lot of speculation around our opponents, and from people saying that we can't outwork Vietnam. I'm really proud of the players for pushing 97 minutes out, and I want to say a big thank you to all the supporters that turned up. That was a special atmosphere, I'm sure. "It made all the players feel special playing for Malaysia, and we wanted to play football to get them united. We wanted to play football to inspire them, and tonight we showed them the team we want to be," he added.

Badminton coach Iskandar leaving Ireland for Malaysia?

KUALA LUMPUR: Former national shuttler Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin is in the frame to fill the vacant position of national women's singles coach. BAM singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen feels that Iskandar could be a valuable addition to the national set-up. But the Dane stopped short of naming him as the frontrunner to replace Indonesian Jeffer Rosobin who resigned in February. Iskandar joined Badminton Ireland in 2021 as a sparring partner, but has transitioned into the role of singles coach. The 33-year-old said during last month's Malaysia Masters that BAM had approached him earlier this year on a coaching role. However, Iskandar remained non-committal then as his family were residing in Ireland. Jonassen acknowledged that Iskandar's experience makes him a strong candidate, but said BAM is still looking at several prospects. "I can't confirm if he's on the shortlist, but of course, he's an experienced coach, someone who would certainly be a good fit for our set-up," said Jonassen.
