‘Mad 24 hours' – Interim boss Joey O'Brien breaks silence on Damien Duff's shock exit from Shelbourne

O'Brien said: 'It was a shock for everyone in the football club. From a personal point of view, I absolutely loved the manager. He will always be my manager.'
When asked if he would be interested in taking the Shels reins, O'Brien said: 'I'm here but I'm as shocked and stunned as everyone else was.
'What has happened is part of the game. The only thing you can do is perform and that's your job. I felt that all of them stood up and put in a performance.'

The post-Duff era was only three minutes old when the champions struck the front.
Tyreke Wilson found space on the left before putting in a cross that saw Mipo Odubeko get a touche that took the ball into the path of Wood at the back post, and he squeezed the ball past Stephen McMullan.

The madness continued five minutes later as Shels gifted their hosts an equalising goal.
McMullan's long clearance was touched back to Kameron Ledwidge but his header to stopper Conor Kearns fell short before Grant Horton nipped in between defender and keeper to finish to an empty net.

It took strong hands from Blues No 1 McMullan to deny the visitors from regaining the lead on 20 minutes.
Ali Coote cut through the centre before slipping the ball out left to his hitman Odubeko only for his stinging to be kept out.
And when Reds attacker Odubeko outmuscled Darragh Leahy on the right five minutes later, he released Wood into a one-on-one run with Jesse Dempsey.
And after the winger got the better of the battle, he could not beat McMullan, who saved at his near post.
A wind-assisted McMullan goal kick on 41 minutes almost bounced for Amond on 41 minutes but keeper Kearns came out to collect just in front of the striker.
HALF-TIME TURNAROUND
An incredible start to the first-half was bettered by a kamikaze start to the second. Within three minutes, the champions were the cause of their own downfall again as they fell behind.
Paddy Barrett got his clearance all wrong and Conan Noonan's effort was parried by Kearns but striker Amond was on hand to finish the rebound from close range.
Sixty seconds later though, interim chief O'Brien was celebrating after Mark Coyle made a lung-bursting run towards goal.
He then sprayed the ball out for Ali Coote who put in a teasing delivery and Wood was on hand to touch home.
There was even time for more drama in the seventh added minute of five added on as the impressive Wood burst from midfield to slip the ball out wide right for Kelly — who let fly with a thunderous strike.
But his effort came crashing back off the bar with McMullan beaten.

Kerry boss Colin Healy admits Damien Duff's sudden departure from Shelbourne had taken him by surprise. Irish football was rocked on Sunday when – as first revealed by the Irish Examiner – the Ireland legend informed his players at training of his intention to immediately quit. 'I think it has. I think it's surprised everybody," said Healy in the wake of his side's 1-0 away defeat to high flying Cobh Ramblers on Monday night. "I suppose what he's done for the league the last few years, winning the league last year, he's been absolutely brilliant. Obviously I would have known Damien through my playing-career. He's never changed from being a player to a coach. "Really, really top person, but an excellent coach. It was a big shock for everybody, but I would imagine he has his reasons for leaving. "I would just wish him the best of luck going forward on his next chapter, but he is a top, top coach.' So could it be the pressure of such a high intensity gig at Shelbourne that might have contributed to Duff's decision. 'I've had a bit of that at Cork, and that's the reason why I stepped away from Cork. Probably my own personal issues as well. 'The job is, there's no break in it. It is full on. The reason that's why I did step away from Cork is that I was a bit burnt out, and I felt that I couldn't give as much as I could have before. 'It was the reason I just stepped away and I let somebody else do it. But it is full on. There's no break. Obviously, you've got your coaching staff, but you're working non-stop, and you're on the phone trying to get players, and it takes its toll. "But that's the job we know we're going into, so we have to accept that as well.' As regards to Kerry's loss to Cobh Ramblers by a single second half goal that was down to keeper error, Healy refused to blame his net minder Tim-Oliver Hiemer. 'I thought first half we had better chances, probably their only chances in the first half probably came from set plays, and we know that they're very, very dangerous on set plays, but at half-time we were happy. "In the second half they changed their system, and obviously they went with the 3-5-2, and they put obviously Whelan and Murphy up top, and they went the small bit more direct. "Their goal came from, listen, we could have done better, but what I would say is that Tim has been, just since I've come in, Tim has been fantastic, and he's been brilliant, and it's just that when a keeper makes a mistake like that, it's probably highlighted an awful lot more. "When the outfield players make mistakes, people don't really, sometimes don't notice it as much, but listen, Tim has been brilliant, brilliant for me since he's come in, and the amount of saves, the amount of games that he's won for us.' So have Kerry play off ambitions as they sit only two points off the top five with an away game to Wexford coming this Friday? 'That's the message that we're saying to the players. I'm only probably talking, since they've come in, and what I've seen so far within the players, and I know there's more in them, and the games that we've played, we've done okay so far. 'We haven't come off the pitch, and I wouldn't say we've been outplayed. We've come off the pitch, we've given away some silly goals, and it happens with all teams. But I think there's a confidence there within the team. "There's good work-rate. We've got some good young players. We would like to get into the playoffs, will it be tough? Absolutely, but we will take one game at a time, and we'll see, where it takes us.' Healy also admits that he will be hoping to strengthen his squad with the transfer window due to open on July 1st. 'Yeah, we are looking, but we've got to make sure we bring in the right players. If they're not available for this window, it might be for next year, but we've got to make sure we get the right ones in. "I don't want to be taking players just for the sake of it either.'

'I am sad to see him leave... He's a good manager and a good person'
SHAMROCK ROVERS manager Stephen Bradley paid tribute to Damien Duff after it was confirmed on Sunday that the former Chelsea star had stepped down as Shelbourne manager. The pair had been at odds this season, with Duff earlier this month accusing Bradley and Shamrock Rovers of showing a lack of class. But Bradley put those issues behind him as he accentuated the positive aspects of his rival's impact since becoming a League of Ireland manager in 2021. 'First of all, I am sad to see him leave Shelbourne and the league as a whole,' Bradley said after Rovers' 2-0 loss to Bohemians last night. 'He's obviously a good manager and coach, he's a good person, and he is and was very, very good for the league. Sad to see him go, and hopefully he comes back in the league at some point. 'I'm sure he has his reasons for making the decision. 'If he's made that decision, he obviously feels strong about it, so you've got to respect that.' Advertisement Bradley said he had not spoken to Duff since Sunday's shock announcement. Asked whether they would talk in time to try resolve their differences, the Hoops manager added: 'That's between me and Damien, when we're in it, and we were in it, he will do everything to win for his team, and I will do everything to win for my team. 'I don't think people realise the pressure of managing. It's 24/7. You go away from the ground losing a game, and there's no feeling like it. 'You try to describe to people how you've put in so much, it's 24/7 all of the time, and it has an effect. 'We have had our different views and not a great relationship. We don't know each other, but I'd still admire him from a distance.' On the game itself, Reynolds lavished praise on his side after a deserved 2-0 victory against the league leaders. 'I was just talking to [former Bohs player and coach] Derek Pender. He said he hasn't seen such a good 45 and he's been here such a long time. I thought it was the best I've seen us without the ball, but I'm not surprised. With the ball, there were transitions when they lost the ball from us winning it back, we pressed and tried to score. 'Stevie O'Donnell [and the other coaching staff] are outstanding at what they do, and the information, we're all on the same page about what we're passing on. And that's key.' Reynolds also addressed the criticism he received from the club's supporters after some disappointing results earlier in the season. 'I know our relationship [with the fans] has been fractured at times, but we're in a good place now. 'I think the dressing room is really good, and I don't have any doubts that the dressing room's been behind me, even last year, when the results weren't going well.' Bradley, meanwhile, admitted his side had not been up to the standard required for a big Dublin derby, as they suffered a fifth defeat in six matches against Bohemians. 'First half we were miles off the game, a million miles off what's required in any game but especially in this type of game, so as a result they were two up and could have been three or four to be honest, we were that far off the level, but that's football. 'There are loads of factors that we have to try and understand why we were so far off it in that first half. You've got to credit Bohs, they were good but we were a million miles off it in every aspect, in every way, and you don't win games of football in this league if you're that far off the levels.'

RTE provide Shelbourne with much-needed good news amid fallout from Damien Duff's shock resignation
RTÉ have announced that they will be showing Shelbourne's Champions League clash with Linfield live.
