Hailee Steinfeld inspired to direct by Sinners filmmaker Ryan Coogler
Hailee Steinfeld has been inspired to direct by her experience on Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners'.
The 28-year-old actress portrays Mary in Coogler's period horror movie which is set in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta and also stars Michael B. Jordan, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell and Delroy Lindo.
Steinfeld learned so much from Coogler, 38, on set and his talent and passion for filmmaking made her think that she would like to sit in the director's chair.
When asked if working with Coogler had inspired to direct a movie, she said: "Absolutely.
"Directing has always been something I've been intrigued by, and you work with someone like Ryan, and it's impossible not to feel like you have to do that ... I'm like, 'Yeah, there's no question.' But then I think to myself, 'There's Ryan Coogler, so why would I?' I'd just have to call him for everything — to have him do it all.''
When quizzed in an interview with Collider.com on what genre she would like to tackle, she added: "It'd be tough to pinpoint one. With 'Sinners' fresh on my brain, it's been made possible in my eyes … that you can have a million things in one and have it feel so cohesive and grounded.
"I'm inspired at the thought of not feeling like it has to be one thing.'
Steinfeld says 'Creed' helmer Coogler's gift as a director is that he understands how actors work and wants to be as collaborative as possible.
She said: "What I loved so much about working with him was it's like he was an actor in another life.
"The way that he speaks to actors, the way that he works with them, the way that he writes for them - there's a difference.
"He also makes it look incredibly easy.
"I loved so much what a collaboration working on the role of Mary felt like with Ryan. The conversations were endless, the questions were flowing constantly both ways and every time I felt like I couldn't have a clearer understanding of a particular scene, Ryan would come and throw something in there that just broke the whole thing open all over again, whether it was a blocking thing or a line.
"The process of developing this character didn't end.'

Ryan Coogler speaks out on potential Sinners sequel
Ryan Coogler says 'Sinners' will not be getting a sequel. The filmmaker wrote and directed the acclaimed horror movie, which is set in 1932 in the he Mississippi Delta and stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers Smoke and Stack who return to Clarksdale wafter serving in World War I and open a juke joint only to be confronted by a supernatural evil. Coogler has told fans there will not be a follow-up film as it was always his intention for 'Sinners' to be a standalone story, following his work on franchises 'Black Panther' and 'Creed'. In interview with Ebony magazine, he said: "I've been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that. "I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.' Coogler wanted movie goers to watch 'Sinners' - which also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Miles Caton and Jack O'Connell - and come away with the feeling it was a "holistic and finished thing". He added: "I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees and desserts, I wanted all of it there. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention." 'Sinners' has been a box office hit and has earned over $350 million at the global box office and it will be available on streaming platforms and VOD on 3 June. Coogler recently revealed that the plot for 'Sinners' was inspired by the Metallica song 'One', which featured on the metal band's 1988 LP ' ...And Justice for All'. Speaking to the San Fransisco Chronicle, he said: "I wanted the movie to feel like a song, so I used Metallica's One." The filmmaker explained how the song "starts off intense, then gets melodic and going somewhere just crazy. But by the time you're finished, it was clear you were always going to get there." Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich even worked on the score for the horror film.

Controversial Married At First Sight groom Ryan Donnelly shocks fans as he debuts his latest acting role after interim restraining order from TV "bride"
Controversial Married At First Sight groom Ryan Donnelly has shocked fans as he debuted his latest acting gig. It's understood the project manager, 36, has pursued acting amid reports he is unable to find work after Nine's reality hit finished airing in April. On Sunday, the reality star took to Instagram Stories to share a photo of himself dressed as a police officer for a new role. Ryan looked every inch the real-life cop, complete with his faux attire that included a badge, patches, a blue shirt, and a bulletproof vest. "We on," he wrote, along with a screenshot notifying his 19,000 followers his account has been verified with a blue badge. MAFS fan account mafsgossip quickly reshared the new gig along with two other of Ryan's past dress-ups. He could be seen rocking a 70's moustache in one, while the other showed him posing with claws and a white tank top at a festival. Fans flocked to the comments section to say the MAFS star was well suited to the force. "He actually suits it," one person said. "Suits you. It's never too late to join the police force," another person said. It's not the first time the aspiring actor has stunned fans by posing as an officer. In March, one fan took to social media to point out Ryan's cameo appearance in the new BINGE Original Series The Last Anniversary. 'Just watching new series on BINGE, is this who I think it is? It's called The Last Anniversary,' they wrote, along with a screenshot of the star. The Last Anniversary, based on the book of the same title by author Liane Moriarty, is executive produced by Australian A-lister Nicole Kidman. The Campbelltown groom can be seen around 20 minutes into episode one, sporting a white shirt and muli-coloured jacket in an office scene. Ryan confirmed to Yahoo Lifestyle he played a 'simple police officer guarding the star patient in that episode'. 'Always amazing fun on sets like those,' he said. The role on BINGE isn't Ryan's first, as he has previously starred in Neighbours and NCIS: Sydney. The 36-year-old also appeared briefly on Nine's Beauty and the Geek in 2022. Earlier this year, he was spotted on the streets of Sydney acting in a major upcoming Hollywood horror film starring American actor Dylan O'Brien. Ryan could be seen strutting across a footpath dressed in a corporate navy blue suit, white shirt and tie for the gig. He was clean-shaven and completed the look with a carry bag and a pair of shiny black dress shoes. Ryan's tumultuous relationship with his on-screen wife Jacqui Burfoot dominated season 12 as the pair frequently fought and made up over seemingly mundane details like having a TV in the couple's bedroom. Jacqui also raised several concerns about Ryan's financial skills and his ability to contribute to their future family. The Kiwi bride suggested his career choice might not be "enough" financially. She later took to TikTok to clarify she raised the concerns about his acting ambitions, not his salary as a project manager. Ryan and Jacqui's rows spilled over into court around the time they dramatically ended their union at Final Vows in April. In March, Jacqui obtained an interim restraining order against Ryan, which prevented him from commenting on social media about her. Ryan subsequently applied for an Apprehended Domestic Violence Order (ADVO) against her. The matter was heard at Campbelltown Court House in April. Magistrate Shane McAnulty told the court he was unwilling to grant the order in Jacqui's absence and asked the parties to prepare submissions for the matter to return to court on Tuesday, June 24. has reached out to Ryan Donnelly for comment.

Hailee Steinfeld and Josh Allen marry in California
Hailee Steinfeld and Josh Allen have got married. The 28-year-old actress and the Buffalo Bills quarterback were photographed walking down the aisle at a ceremony in California on Saturday (31.05.25). The couple were initially linked romantically back in 2023 and went on to announce their engagement in an Instagram post last November - although the NFL star's proposal caught Hailee by surprise. Asked if she suspected that Josh would pop the question, the 'Sinners' star told Who What Wear: "Oh my God, no! You talk to your girlfriends about that, right, where you're like, 'I just don't want to know.' She added of the proposal: "It was magical. That's the word." Hailee was also delighted that Josh, 29, made sure that she was dressed appropriately for the occasion. She said: "I'm so grateful that he did it the way he did so that I looked good, and we have these photos that we'll have to cherish for the rest of our lives that I'm not looking at being like, 'What was I wearing?' Josh recently described how he was really "proud" of Hailee following her starring role in the critically acclaimed horror movie 'Sinners'. He said: "I'm so excited for her and so proud of her. "It's getting some great reviews and it's a fantastic movie, so go watch it." The quarterback is one of the top players in the NFL and signed a six-year deal with the Buffalo Bills worth $330 million in March but is happy to let his sporting talents take a backseat to Hailee's acting success. Josh said: "I'm just there trying to support her in whatever way that I can. "That was her moment and I'm so glad she got to shine." Hailee had claimed in April that she was focusing on promoting 'Sinners' - in which she plays the character Mary - before sorting out arrangements for her and Josh's wedding. The 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' star told 'Extra': "We are in the middle of a press tour. We got a movie coming out in 12 days? Six, something. We're focused on that." Steinfeld explained that she had learnt a lot about herself and her family during the making of the film, which is set in the south of the United States during the 1930s. She said: "I would say I learned a lot about my myself through Mary and even more about my family history … I had so many amazing conversations with my mom about her family and about her dad, my grandfather, who is half black, who I wish every day - because of this movie and for so many other reasons - I could call and ask him all the questions, and I would absolutely do that if he were here."
