Racehorse death toll rises to 9; activists question clean chit by probe
Bhopal: Another racehorse brought from Hyderabad to Jabalpur has died under mysterious circumstances, raising the toll to nine at a time when a district-level investigation has given the clean chit to all parties involved in the transport and care of 57 horses.

Jabalpur collector Deepak Verma defended the inquiry, saying, "This report is from three senior doctors. We will escalate the matter and investigate if there are any objections to the documentary evidence."
Animal welfare groups and local activists allege that the horses were transported and kept in miserable conditions, and call the probe a "whitewash".
The horses were transported between April 25 and April 29, 2025, under the supervision of
, acting on behalf of a Hyderabad-based firm.
Several of the horses were reported unwell on May 5, and the MP animal husbandry department began an investigation the following day.
A three-member committee — Manoj Vaishya of Panagar, Sanjay Gupta of Kandrakheda and Vishnu Gupta of Jabalpur — conducted the probe and concluded that all legal and veterinary procedures were followed. There were no signs of negligence or mistreatment during or after transport, they said.
According to their report, all 57 horses had valid health certificates and passports at the time of travel. They were transported in 10 trucks with adequate space, food, water and caretakers. Although eight horses sustained minor injuries during the journey, they were promptly treated. The deaths of eight horses (then) were attributed to transportation-related stress, climatic changes, and heat stroke.
Officials said the horses are now at a private property in Amkhera village on the outskirts of Jabalpur, where suitable arrangements for their feeding, care, and treatment were observed during inspection.

Animal welfare activists, however, remain unconvinced and have accused the administration of downplaying the issue. "How can a report that admits to eight deaths conclude that everything was done properly? There needs to be accountability, not just paperwork," said an activist, requesting anonymity.
Critics have demanded a fresh investigation by a neutral body.
Rajasthan-based polo player Lavanya Shekhawat, who initially raised concerns over the horses' condition, said: "I am deeply disappointed with this so-called investigation.
It is not justice—it's a whitewash."
"We have sworn testimonies from doctors and veterinarians confirming that the horses were left without proper food for three to four months. Their medical reports detail animals in terrible condition, carrying untreated, deep wounds. Many have died. Yet the committee refuses to fix responsibility or take meaningful action. Even the transport — portrayed in the report as 'smooth' — was anything but.
It was chaotic and risk-laden, further endangering lives.
Everything has been smoothed over, covered up, and pushed aside. This isn't what I fought for. These animals suffered horribly, and those responsible must be held accountable. Justice must actually be served — not merely spoken about," she said.
While Sachin Tiwari has yet to make a public statement, sources confirmed that the surviving horses are under his care at the Amkhera property.

Mithi river desilting: ED raids actor Dino Morea, BMC officials, others
This includes the premises of Dino Morea in the Bandra (West) area of Mumbai, those linked to his brother Santino, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, contractors and some others, the sources said. The raids covered more than 15 premises located in Mumbai in Maharashtra and Kochi in Kerala. Mumbai, Jun 6 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate on Friday conducted searches at the premises of actor Dino Morea, some BMC officials, and contractors among others, as part of a money laundering investigation linked to an alleged Rs 65 crore worth Mithi river desilting 'scam', official sources said. The searches were conducted in Kochi as one of the companies that provided desilting equipment to the BMC — Matprop Technical Services Pvt Ltd — is based in this city, they said. The investigation is being conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said. The ED case stems from a Mumbai Police economic offences wing (EOW) FIR filed in May against 13 people, including contractors and civic officials, for an alleged Rs 65.54 crore scam in the tenders awarded from 2017-2023 for desilting of the Mithi river which flows through Mumbai and acts as a stormwater drainage channel for the metro city. The Uddhav Thackeray-led undivided Shiv Sena controlled the cash-rich BMC from 1997 till the party's split in 2022. After the expiry of the general body in 2022, the civic body was controlled by the state government, which was then headed by Eknath Shinde. It was alleged by the police in its complaint that BMC officials tailored the tender for the desilting contract in such a way that it benefited a particular supplier of machinery, and the contractors reportedly generated fraudulent bills for transporting the sludge out of Mumbai. Morea and his brother were questioned by the Mumbai Police EOW in this case last month. The 49-year-old actor has been questioned twice by police. The Morea brothers, it is understood, were questioned by the police about their alleged links with alleged middleman Ketan Kadam, arrested in the case along with another accused, Jai Joshi, apart from some financial transactions made in a company linked to Santino. Kadam and Joshi, according to police, were involved in the renting out of 'silt pusher' machines and multi-purpose amphibious pontoon machines to contractors who were carrying out Mithi river desilting work. This is the second time that the actor has been in the crosshairs of the ED, as, in 2021, the agency had attached his assets as part of a money laundering investigation linked to an alleged bank fraud case against Gujarat-based pharmaceutical company Sterling Biotech and its promoters. The plan to desilt the river was planned by the Mumbai civic authorities following the 2005 floods, which brought the city to a grinding halt. Russian missile, drone attack across Ukraine kills 3 in capital Kyiv
Kyiv, Jun 6 (AP) Russia targeted six regions of Ukraine with 407 drones and 44 missiles in one of its largest aerial attacks of the three-year war, Ukrainian officials said Friday. The nighttime assault killed three emergency responders in the capital Kyiv, according to authorities. The barrage included ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as a mix of strike drones and decoys, Ukrainian air force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat said. Ukrainian forces said they shot down about 30 of the cruise missiles and up to 200 of the drones. Ukrainian cities have come under regular bombardment since Russia invaded its neighbor in February 2022. The attacks have killed more than 12,000 civilians, according to the United Nations. 'Russia doesn`t change its stripes," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. Zelenskyy, as well as the Ukrainian Interior Ministry and the general prosecutor's office, said three emergency workers were killed in Kyiv while responding to the Russian strikes. 'They were working under fire to help people," the Interior Ministry said in a statement. Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko earlier said four people were killed. His office did not immediately respond to a request for clarification. The war has continued unabated even as a US-led diplomatic push for a settlement has brought two rounds of direct peace talks between delegations from Russia and Ukraine. The negotiations delivered no significant breakthroughs, however, and the sides remain far apart on their terms for an end to the fighting. Ukraine has offered an unconditional 30-day ceasefire and a meeting between Zelenskyy and Russian leader Vladimir Putin to break the deadlock. But the Kremlin has effectively rejected a truce and hasn't budged from its demands. 'The Kremlin continues efforts to falsely portray Russia as willing to engage in good-faith negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, despite Russia's repeated refusal to offer any concessions," the Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, said late Thursday. Putin said in a phone call with US President Donald Trump earlier this week that he would respond to Ukraine's daring long-range attack on Russian air bases on Sunday. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the attacks demonstrated key differences between Russia and Ukraine. 'The difference … is that Ukraine hits legitimate military targets—such as aircraft equipped to bomb our children. Russia targets residential areas, civilians, and critical infrastructure," Sybiha wrote on X. 'Putting Ukraine and Russia on equal footing is unacceptable." The latest Russian attack came hours after Trump said it might be better to let Ukraine and Russia 'fight for a while" before pulling them apart and pursuing peace. Trump's comments were a remarkable detour from his often-stated appeals to stop the war. Russia also reports drone attacks In Russia, air defences shot down 10 Ukrainian drones heading toward the capital early Friday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. Flights at Moscow airports were temporarily suspended during the night as a precaution. Ukrainian drones also targeted three other regions of Russia, authorities said, damaging apartment buildings and industrial plants. Three people were injured, officials said. Russia's Defence Ministry said that air defences downed 174 Ukrainian drones over 13 regions early Friday. It added that three Ukrainian Neptune missiles were also shot down over the Black Sea. Ukraine struck airfields and other military targets in Russia, such as fuel storage tanks and transport hubs, the Ukrainian General Staff said. Also, a locomotive derailed early Friday in the Belgorod region after the track was blown up, Belgorod Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov said. Russia has recently accused Ukraine of sabotaging the rail network. Ukrainian air defences are strained In Kyiv, multiple explosions were heard for hours as falling drone debris sparked fires across several districts, said Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Administration. He urged people to seek shelter. Fourteen-year-old Kyiv resident Vitalina Vasylchenko sheltered in a parking garage with her 6-year-old sister and their mother after an explosion blew one of their windows off its hinges. 'I heard a buzzing sound, then my dad ran to me and covered me with his hand, then there was a very loud explosion," she said. 'My whole life flashed before my eyes, I already thought that was it. I started having a panic attack … I'm shocked that I'm alive." Ukraine's human rights chief, Dmytro Lubinets, called for a strong international response to Russia's latest overnight attack, saying the assault violated basic human rights. 'Russia is acting like a terrorist, systematically targeting civilian infrastructure," Lubinets wrote on Telegram. 'The world must respond clearly and take concrete steps, including condemning the aggressor's actions." Several districts of Kyiv are hit Authorities reported damage in several districts in Kyiv, and rescue workers responded to damage and fires at multiple locations. In Solomyanskyi district, a fire broke out on the 11th floor of a 16-story residential building. Emergency services evacuated three people from the apartment. The attack caused a blackout in some areas, and more than 2,000 households on Kyiv's eastern bank were without power, the Kyiv City Administration said. top videos View all Elsewhere, 10 people were injured by an aerial attack on the western city of Ternopil, regional governor Viacheslav Nehoda said. The strike damaged industrial and infrastructure facilities, left parts of the city without electricity, and disrupted water supplies. Three people were also injured in Ukraine's central Poltava region. Russia also targeted the western Lviv and Khmelnytskyi regions, and the northern Chernihiv region. (AP) NSA NSA First Published:
