
Popular chain offers breakfast for the first time

A beloved Chicago chain has finally delivered on something fans have been craving for years: breakfast. Five of its restaurants across Illinois quietly debuted a full morning menu this week, offering classic items with a local twist — including collaborations with two iconic Windy City brands, Stan's Donuts and Metropolis Coffee.
Served daily from 6.30 to 10.30am all summer long, the breakfast rollout includes items like polish sausage, egg & cheese sandwiches, loaded scrambles, and even a chocolate cake donut. The move marks a major shift for Portillo's, the fast-casual favorite known for its Chicago-style hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, and signature chocolate cake.
It's the first breakfast menu in the company's 62-year history. 'Chicago has been asking for Portillo's breakfast for years, and we're thrilled to deliver our unique take on morning classics,' Garrett Kern, vice president of strategy and culinary, told DailyMail.com. Portillo's has under 100 locations, but experts say it consistently delivers better value compared to much larger rivals like McDonald's and Chipotle.
If the breakfast test performs well, Portillo's plans to expand it to more locations—and potentially make it permanent. The pilot breakfast menu is available now at Portillo's locations in Chicago, Elmhurst, Tinley Park, Shorewood, and Niles. Customers can grab a $7.99 meal deal that includes a breakfast sandwich, small coffee, and hash brown bites.
Portillo's will continue to keep an eye on customer responses for the entire summer. Portillo's is not the only restaurant chain to be rolling out new tests at select locations. McDonald's made headlines after testing its McVeggie burgers select locations in Canada this year.
The test ended in April and there are no plans for the plant-based item to be tested in the US. Chipotle completed a test run of its honey chicken, which was available at select locations in California and Tennessee last year.
Unlike McDonald's, Chipotle's honey chicken was a smashing success and it has since become a limited time offering nationwide. Dutch Bros. is currently testing food items with the hopes of helping attract more visitors during breakfast hours.

Tariff-hit firms should review bonuses or risk backlash, US lawyers warn
Businesses hit by tariffs should start reviewing their bonus policies and how deeply they may need to cut executive payouts if they hope to avoid a public backlash, lawyers have said. Partners at the Silicon Valley law firm Cooley said that while pay was probably the last thing on bosses' minds as they scramble to adapt to Donald Trump's unpredictable tariff policies, pay committees should start assessing their options soon. 'Many will encounter rising material costs and reduced profit margins, particularly given the significant pressure on the supply chain,' a memo by its top lawyers said. 'Taken together with the recent stock market volatility, companies (both public and private) will need to address the impact of these challenges on their business and, importantly, consider the effects on director and executive compensation programs.' Cooley – whose clients have included Netflix, Apple, Meta, and Twitter before its takeover by Elon Musk and rebrand as X – said that without a proper review of pay policies, companies may end up handing big bonuses to bosses while the rest of the workforce suffers from cost cuts and job losses. That may be due to remuneration policies that do not automatically account for the impact of so-called 'black swan events', such as a dramatic U-turn in US trade policy or a global pandemic. Michael Bergmann, a partner at Cooley, told the Guardian: 'There is a meaningful risk that rank-and-file employees are going to suffer here, and that could take the form of layoffs, folks losing their jobs or wages.' The memo said: 'Given the overall macroeconomic and sociopolitical climate, there is a strong risk that any accommodation for those [tariff] impacts will be viewed as unduly rewarding executives, particularly if rank-and-file employees do not benefit in a proportionate way. Accordingly, compensation committees and boards must tread deliberately and carefully.' Cooley lawyers said there was also a possibility that executives might be unduly punished for tariff impacts that were beyond their control, and that this should also be considered by remuneration committees. It is likely that pay packets will start to reflect tariff impacts from early next year. Trump rolled out sweeping tariffs against most countries in April, in a shock move that left companies looking at how they could offset a potential hit to trade and revenues. The US president later paused and then reduced most tariffs, but last week he refocused attention on steel and aluminium imports, doubling tariffs for all countries except the UK to 50%. Tech companies have also suffered as a result of Trump's trade war with Beijing, which has included an order restricting AI chip exports to China. 'The company's nationality is not really the driving question here,' he said. Luke Hildyard, the director of the High Pay Centre thinktank, suggested the tariff fallout should prompt a more fundamental review of executives' multimillion-pound pay packets. 'The entire flawed premise of vast executive pay awards is that business success is driven by a tiny number of business leaders, and that companies should pay whatever it takes to attract and retain the best ones,' he said. 'The tariff furore is only the latest example – following energy supply challenges in Europe, the pandemic or the supply chain issues in its aftermath – of business leaders being pretty powerless in the face of wider events. Maybe the most useful lesson here is that they are mortals like the rest of us and more moderate pay awards that reflect that fact would be appropriate.'

US solar energy growth to slow as Washington priorities shift
June 9 (Reuters) - New U.S. solar energy installations are expected to fall over the next five years as the industry grapples with a shift in federal policy that favors fossil fuels, tariffs and other challenges, according to a report published on Monday by a top solar trade group. New solar capacity will be more than 10% lower in 2030 than in 2025, according to a forecast by the Solar Energy Industries Association and energy research firm Wood Mackenzie. The outlook includes the expected effects of new federal tariffs on a range of imported materials that are important to solar projects, including steel and aluminum. But it does not include potential cuts to clean energy tax credits being considered in a Republican budget bill in Congress - another major threat to the industry if passed into law. Tax credits for clean energy projects and factories contained in former U.S. President Joe Biden's 2022 Inflation Reduction Act have buttressed industry growth in the last three years. But the bill that passed the House last month could upend what has been a boom in the sector, SEIA warned. Solar accounted for 69% of new electricity generation during the latest quarter. The industry installed 10.8 gigawatts of capacity in the first quarter of this year, a decline of 7% from a year ago but still near historical highs, the report said. At the same time, eight new or expanded solar factories opened during the quarter in states including Texas and Ohio. "Those are all positive signs, generally," SEIA President Abigail Ross Hopper said in an interview. "Look at all of this that could be. And the Congress is threatening all of this development." Trump campaigned on a promise to repeal the IRA tax credits, calling them expensive, unnecessary and harmful to business. His administration has sought to bolster domestic production of fossil fuels as part of its energy dominance agenda, which excludes renewables like solar and wind. The U.S. solar industry is on track to install 48.6 GW this year, but that will decline to 43.5 GW in 2030, the report said. Demand from corporate buyers for utility-scale projects is fueling industry momentum, the report said, though concerns about federal policy will constrain development. Residential installations fell 13% during the first quarter to 1.1 GW. The sector has struggled lately with high interest rates, tariffs and less favorable state policies. But that segment of the market is expected to grow between 2025 and 2030 due to rising electricity rates that make it a more compelling offering to consumers. The utility sector accounted for 9 GW of installations in the first quarter. Texas, Florida, Ohio, Indiana, and California accounted for 65% of new capacity.
