‘Bigger problem': Boss hits back at WFH claims

The Australian boss of a major tech company says businesses that argue working from home hampers productivity need to address bigger concerns.
A mandate to work from the office is unlikely to fix a 'bigger problem' of employees who won't do their jobs without a manager 'hovering over them', HP Australia director Brad Pulford has told NewsWire.

Multinationals and Australia's biggest homegrown firms represent a broad spectrum of policies.
Amazon, Dell and Tabcorp have ordered workers into the office five days a week.
Coles has tightened the reins on its administrative staff, with one day in-person minimums becoming a three-day mandate this year. Woolworths office staff need to show up three days a week too.
Commonwealth Bank and ANZ staff need to rock up for half of all working days per month. At National Australia Bank, the rank and file need to show face three times a week, and managers only get one day at home per week.
On paper, the NSW public service is the biggest employer in the country.
Public servants in that state were sent a memo last year saying they would 'principally' need to be in the office, but different agencies are mandating different rules. The availability of actual desks is cited online by workers as a tangible factor at each agency. Mr Pulford points to HP's own analysis, which shows 73 per cent of people think it's important that staff are empowered to work in the way that best suits their personal needs and maximises their effectiveness.
However, Australian workers do not think they are entitled to flexible working arrangements, the HP analysis shows.
Among Australian 'knowledge workers', 92 per cent would take a pay cut to work where and when they want, or for a better work-life balance.
'There are real and persistent concerns over team collaboration, organisational culture and performance management,' Mr Pulford said.
'Some professions require in-person creativity. Others have a physical component that can't be replicated. But these problems can be managed.
'The businesses that are going against the grain usually cite productivity as their main justification. But if your employees won't do their job without a manager hovering over them, arguably you have a bigger problem,' he said.
HP employs 435 people in Australia and New Zealand. Mr Pulford said flexible working arrangements were 'not a free-for-all' at the tech firm, but an issue to be managed 'carefully and thoughtfully'.
'Our employees are at times required to connect in person at our HP sites to further business goals.'
The Australian job market had clearly adapted with one-third of people working remotely at least some of the time, he said.
'We think the entire conversation around hybrid work needs to shift. If the debate hasn't been decided entirely, we think those in favour of hybrid work definitely have the upper hand at this point.'
'We should spend less time arguing about whether it's acceptable and more time thinking about how we can use it to drive growth by creating better workplaces,' Mr Pulford said.

Only 36 per cent of Australians have any faith the US will act responsibly in the world, a 20 point drop since last year, shocking new polling has revealed. The Lowy Institute's 2025 Poll, touted as the broadest annual survey of Australian attitudes, reveals Australians' feelings of safety and economic optimism have fallen to their lowest levels in the 21-year history of the poll. Trust in the US was a record low in the poll, however the nation is still seen as key to ensuring our security, Lowy Institute executive director, Michael Fullilove said 'Australians are clearly unsettled by what they've seen of the second Trump administration, with almost two-thirds (64 per cent) now holding little to no trust in the United States to act responsibly — the lowest level in the history of the Lowy Institute Poll,' Dr Fullilove said. 'At the same time, the public continues to separate the person of the president from the institution of the alliance. 'Most Australians (80 per cent) still believe the Australia-US alliance is important to our security - one of the most consistent findings in the history of the Institute's polling.' The polling did however find that 40 per cent of Australians believed we needed to distance ourselves more from the US. Trust in China was also at dire levels, with only 20 per cent of those surveyed expressing any trust whatsoever. The polling surveyed a nationally representative sample of 2117 Australian adults in early March. The polling has a 2.1 per cent margin of error. Only half of Australians reported feeling any level of optimism about the five-year economic outlook, equalling the pandemic doldrums of 2020, and the pessimistic result was recorded before President Trump's 'liberation day' global tariffs rocked financial markets. The concern about global trade has sharpened the desire to manufacture more domestically. More than 80 per cent of Australians feel more should be built onshore even if it costs more, while just 16 per cent of people say Australia should source all goods from wherever they cost the least. 'As Australia moves towards net zero emissions, three-quarters of Australians see renewables playing a 'major role' in the 2050 energy mix, compared to far fewer that envisage a major role for nuclear (37 per cent) or coal (24 per cent),' Dr Fullilove said. The prime minister has confirmed he will meet Donald Trump face-to-face as millions of Americans take to the streets to protest against the US president. Anthony Albanese is preparing for one of the most important diplomatic discussions of his career when he holds talks with Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Canada on Tuesday, local time. The prime minister will be trying to negotiate an exemption from controversial US tariffs. But he faces an uphill battle to cut through with his message as Trump stares down domestic unrest and renewed conflict in the Middle East. Albanese was unperturbed as he confirmed the much-anticipated meeting to reporters in Seattle on Saturday, local time. 'Obviously, there are issues that the US president is dealing with at the moment, but I expect that we will be able to have a constructive engagement,' he said. 'We'll have a discussion as two friends should.' Albanese said he would raise tariffs and emphasise the importance of the AUKUS security pact, under which Australia is due to acquire nuclear-powered submarines from the US. Both men have already spoken on three occasions but Tuesday's arrangement is the first time they will meet in person. Australia is facing 10 per cent tariffs on goods exported to the US and — like all US trading partners except the UK — 50 per cent tariffs on aluminium and steel sent to America. Supplies of critical minerals and access to the Australian market for US beef could be used as bargaining chips during the talks. Albanese did not want to make 'grand declarations' prior to the meeting, but he reiterated he would put forward Australia's interests. 'It is also in the interests of the United States for Australia to be treated appropriately,' he said. Tensions between two countries have ebbed and flowed in recent days after Australia, alongside several other countries, was criticised by the US for sanctioning two Israeli government ministers. Australia has also pushed back against US calls to increase defence spending to 3.5 per cent of GDP, while Washington has launched a review into the AUKUS agreement to ensure it aligns with Trump's 'America first' agenda. The prime minister arrived in Seattle after holding bilateral talks in Fiji and was expected to leave for the G7 on Sunday. He used an event involving US business and technology leaders to sing the praises of 'free and fair trade' ahead of the tariff talks, hailing a $20 billion commitment from Amazon to expand its Australia data centre operations. Albanese is also expected to hold talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other world leaders during the summit. He landed in America on the same day a controversial military parade commemorating the US army's 250th birthday took place on the other side of the country, in Washington DC. The event coincided with Trump's 79th birthday and represents the first such military parade in more than three decades. Millions of Americans across the nation gathered to protest the US president as part of 'No Kings' rallies held in major cities, while hordes also attended the parade in support of armed forces. Protest organisers accused Mr Trump of staging a 'made-for-TV display of dominance for his birthday' with the military parade, which falls on Flag Day — the date when the US flag was adopted by congress. Tens of thousands marched to Seattle's towering Space Needle as they chanted, 'no Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA'. For Stephany Simonelli, who donned a fake crown with a cross and a sash that read 'no kings', it was her first time taking part in a march or rally. 'This just felt absolutely imperative for democracy,' she told AAP. 'I'm really afraid for our country. We, in America, really need to step up and take a stand.'
