Former national team captain Aminul Islam has been elected President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), replacing Faruque Ahmed, who was ousted after a no-confidence motion and a series of controversies during his short tenure.
According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, the decision was made at a board meeting in Dhaka on Friday, barely 24 hours after Faruque lost his place as one of the sports ministry's representatives on the BCB board. This move automatically disqualified him from holding the president's post.
Aminul Islam, who led Bangladesh in their 1999 World Cup debut and famously scored the country's first Test century in 2000, steps into the role at a turbulent time for the board. He has taken leave from his position as ICC development manager in Melbourne to serve as BCB chief.
Aminul will remain president until the next board elections, expected by October this year.
Faruque's removal was initiated after eight BCB directors submitted a no-confidence motion against him. This, combined with the findings of a fact-finding committee on alleged corruption in the BPL, prompted the sports ministry to act. One of the signatories was Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, who was also the other representative from the ministry on the board.
The turmoil comes just nine months after Faruque was appointed BCB president on August 21, 2024, replacing Nazmul Hassan, who had resigned from the post and his role as the sports minister. Faruque's time in office was marred by controversies, especially surrounding his handling of head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe's dismissal and the 2025 edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
The final straw came during the BPL when Durbar Rajshahi, one of the franchises, failed to pay players on time and even left hotel bills unpaid in Chattogram and Dhaka. This triggered a player protest and forced government intervention.
The controversy reportedly embarrassed the interim government and drew the attention of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the head of the interim government, who had taken an active interest in the BPL.
In total, Faruque lasted nine months and eight days as president.

What is 18 years? It's a lifetime of wait for some in the jigsaw called the Indian Premier League. Some have eaten the lion's share while most have had to lick their wounds while heading home. The inaugural winners were crowned barely six months after India's World T20 triumph on September 24th, 2007. Since that Johannesburg euphoria, the Indian billion-dollar baby has seen seven champions and in a parallel cricketing universe, the national team has won a World Cup, two Champions Trophies, another T20 World Cup, been second-best in two Test Championship finals and have held the mace for being the best side in the world in Test matches multiple times. What's more? Sachin Tendulkar has retired, and so have Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma (from Tests and T20s), Gautam Gambhir played his IPL innings, retired, played a political knock and is now the Indian coach. And, the league's most expensive player has moved from captain, wicket-keeper to captain, wicket-keeper-- Rs 6 cr to Mahendra Singh Dhoni in 2008 to Rs 27 cr to Rishabh Pant for 2025 season. But, what has remained a fact since the beginning is that both Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) have not won the IPL trophy. Pakistan set to play Women's World Cup matches in Colombo due to India's host role
Pakistan will play all their women's 50-over World Cup matches in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo when India hosts this year's tournament, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Monday. Politically-estranged India and Pakistan, who have not played a bilateral series since 2013, will play their matches in neutral venues when either country hosts an ICC event, the sport's global governing body announced in December. "The venues for the knockouts are dependent on Pakistan qualifying as two alternative venues have been identified for one semi-final and the final," the ICC said. "Colombo will be the venue for the first semi-final and the final only if Pakistan qualify for those stages." Bengaluru, where the tournament will start with India playing in the opening match, will host the final on November 2 if Pakistan are knocked out earlier in the tournament, the ICC added. Bengaluru will also stage the second semi-final on October 30, a day after the first semi-final in Colombo or Guwahati. Visakhapatnam and Indore are the two other host cities for the eight-team tournament. India played all their matches in Dubai when Pakistan hosted the men's Champions Trophy this year, including the final which they won. Both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League were suspended last month amid clashes between the two countries following an attack targeting tourists that killed 26 people in Kashmir in April. Matches resumed after a ceasefire was announced. The neutral venue arrangement between the countries will also be in place for the men's T20 World Cup in 2026, which India will co-host with Sri Lanka, and the women's T20 World Cup in 2028 in Pakistan.
