Aminul Islam Becomes New BCB President: Report

Aminul Islam is the new President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, replacing Faruque Ahmed after a no-confidence motion. Faruque's tenure faced controversies and BPL issues.
Former national team captain Aminul Islam has been elected President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), replacing Faruque Ahmed, who was ousted after a no-confidence motion and a series of controversies during his short tenure.
According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, the decision was made at a board meeting in Dhaka on Friday, barely 24 hours after Faruque lost his place as one of the sports ministry's representatives on the BCB board. This move automatically disqualified him from holding the president's post.
Aminul Islam, who led Bangladesh in their 1999 World Cup debut and famously scored the country's first Test century in 2000, steps into the role at a turbulent time for the board. He has taken leave from his position as ICC development manager in Melbourne to serve as BCB chief.
Aminul will remain president until the next board elections, expected by October this year.
Faruque's removal was initiated after eight BCB directors submitted a no-confidence motion against him. This, combined with the findings of a fact-finding committee on alleged corruption in the BPL, prompted the sports ministry to act. One of the signatories was Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, who was also the other representative from the ministry on the board.
The turmoil comes just nine months after Faruque was appointed BCB president on August 21, 2024, replacing Nazmul Hassan, who had resigned from the post and his role as the sports minister. Faruque's time in office was marred by controversies, especially surrounding his handling of head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe's dismissal and the 2025 edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
The final straw came during the BPL when Durbar Rajshahi, one of the franchises, failed to pay players on time and even left hotel bills unpaid in Chattogram and Dhaka. This triggered a player protest and forced government intervention.
The controversy reportedly embarrassed the interim government and drew the attention of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the head of the interim government, who had taken an active interest in the BPL.
In total, Faruque lasted nine months and eight days as president.

Josh Hazlewood: Perfect eight-on-eight in tournament finals, will 'Hoff' turn RCB's dream to reality

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 2 (ANI): As Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) takes on Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the final of Indian Premier League (IPL) at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium, plenty will ride on their pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood, whose mere presence at the crease has been nothing short of a booster shot for an already capable pace attack. Having featured in 11 matches for RCB so far, 'Hoff', as he is known to his teammates, has taken 21 wickets at an average of 15.80 and an economy rate of 8.30, with best figures of 4/33. He has been RCB's top wicket taker this season and overall fourth. His ability to generate a big wicket during crunch situations has also earned him the nickname 'Hazlegod' from fans on social media. With Hazlewood in the squad, comes years of franchise and international cricket experience and the much-talked about 'Aussie mentality' of win-at-all-costs. The veteran pacer, known to be sharp with his line and lengths, has almost every title that matters in world cricket, right from the U19 World Cup to the 50-over World Cup to the IPL. An interesting fact that can make fans dream is that he has never lost a final of a major tournament. Wickets and victories have been a certainty when Hazlewood is here and there is evidence to back it. Here is a snapshot of Hazlewood's performances in tournament finals: 2010 U19 WC final: 4/30 against Pakistan in 8.4 overs, bundling out Pak for 82 in chase of 208. For this effort, he won the 'Player of the Match' award. Champions League T20 final in 2012: 3/22 in four overs for Sydney Sixers, bundling out Lions, a South African T20 team, for 121, which was chased down easily. His effort also included the scalp of future South African great Quinton de Kock. 2014 Sheffield Shield final: 6/50 in 22 overs versus West Australia for New South Wales (NSW). The match ended in a draw and NSW won thanks to their top-place finish in points table. World Cup 2015 final: Rock-solid spell of 0/30 in eight overs. This is his only wicketless spell in a tournament final. Mitchell Starc's iconic dismissal of skipper Brendon McCullum kept Aussies in the match from start as they made a lightwork of a below-par 183 by New Zealand. BIg Bash League 2019-2020 final: He took 3/18 in three overs of a 12-over-a-side game for the Sixers, which reduced Melbourne Stars to 97/6 in a run-chase of 117. IPL 2021 for CSK: Representing Chennai Super Kings (CSK) against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), he took 2/29 in four overs, including wickets of Sunil Narine and Eoin Morgan which sunk KKR to 165/9 in chase of 193. T20 WC 2021 final: Pitted against New Zealand, he took 3/16 in four overs, not allowing Kiwis to score massive as they could score just a competitive 172/4, powered by Kane Williamson's 85. His wicket tally included scalps of Daryl Mitchell, Kane and Glenn Phillips. Aussies chased down the total with Mitchell Marsh and David Warner hitting fifties. World Cup 2023 final: Hazlewood delivered a solid spell of 2/60 in 10 overs, which included wickets of Ravindra Jadeja and Suryakumar Yadav. A rampaging India slumped to 240 all-out which was chased down courtesy a Travis Head masterclass in front of a packed Narendra Modi stadium. In these seven finals, Hazlewood has taken 23 wickets, with the best figures of 6/50. While considering T20 tournament finals, he has registered 11 wickets in four games at an average of 7.72 and an economy rate of 5.66, with best figures of 3/16 in the T20 WC 2021 title clash. Will Hazlewood add some more names to the list and increase his tally to power RCB to their biggest dream? Squads: Royal Challengers Bengaluru Squad: Philip Salt, Virat Kohli, Mayank Agarawal, Rajat Patidar(c), Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma(w), Romario Shepherd, Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yash Dayal, Josh Hazlewood, Suyash Sharma, Rasikh Dar Salam, Manoj Bhandage, Tim Seifert, Swapnil Singh, Tim David, Blessing Muzarabani, Nuwan Thushara, Mohit Rathee, Swastik Chikara, Abhinandan Singh Punjab Kings Squad: Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, Josh Inglis(w), Shreyas Iyer(c), Nehal Wadhera, Shashank Singh, Marcus Stoinis, Azmatullah Omarzai, Kyle Jamieson, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Harpreet Brar, Suryansh Shedge, Praveen Dubey, Xavier Bartlett, Vishnu Vinod, Yash Thakur, Aaron Hardie, Kuldeep Sen, Mitchell Owen, Harnoor Singh, Musheer Khan, Pyla Avinash (ANI)

Bengaluru and Punjab eye numero uno IPL trophy as they meet in Final today. Will Kohli's 18-year wait end?

What is 18 years? It's a lifetime of wait for some in the jigsaw called the Indian Premier League. Some have eaten the lion's share while most have had to lick their wounds while heading home. The inaugural winners were crowned barely six months after India's World T20 triumph on September 24th, 2007. Since that Johannesburg euphoria, the Indian billion-dollar baby has seen seven champions and in a parallel cricketing universe, the national team has won a World Cup, two Champions Trophies, another T20 World Cup, been second-best in two Test Championship finals and have held the mace for being the best side in the world in Test matches multiple times. What's more? Sachin Tendulkar has retired, and so have Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma (from Tests and T20s), Gautam Gambhir played his IPL innings, retired, played a political knock and is now the Indian coach. And, the league's most expensive player has moved from captain, wicket-keeper to captain, wicket-keeper-- Rs 6 cr to Mahendra Singh Dhoni in 2008 to Rs 27 cr to Rishabh Pant for 2025 season. But, what has remained a fact since the beginning is that both Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) have not won the IPL trophy. That will change as both teams lock horns for the crown in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. Story within the story? Kohli has not won the big one even if his team has made the final thrice — 2009, 2011 and 2016. He has been in fine form this season too with 614 runs across 14 innings and eight fifties—at better than a half century every two innings. In his last three knocks, he has one score of over 50 and made 1 2 against Punjab in Qualifier 1 during the eight-wicket victory. Wouldn't Punjab be wary? For, Kohli the batter—with all his experience— knows how to win a big match. India vs Pakistan, and the semifinal against Australia in the Champions Trophy; 2024 T20 World Cup final; 2022 T20 WC knock against Pakistan. Batting first or chasing, he would have planned this one to the hilt. Live Events But then, the mighty Mumbai Indians' juggernaut had plans in Qualifier 2. And what did Shreyas Iyer do on Sunday night at the same ground? He made an unbeaten 87 from 41 balls with eight sixes and five fours, ably supported by Josh Inglis (38) and Nehal Wadhera (48). A run chase of 203 was cerebrally overhauled, and never did Punjab looked out of sorts, winning by five wickets and an over to spare. In the process, he became the only one to lead three teams into a final (Delhi Capitals in 2020 and Kolkata Knight Riders to title last year, he was also to do it with two). Will PBKS be second time lucky after having made it to the pinnacle clash just once, in 2014? It's a rare midweek final where 'Kohli(and Bengaluru) finally winning it' could be the underlying theme and 'RCB, RCB' chants would overwhelm an expected full house. But Punjab of 2025, packs a punch.

Pakistan set to play Women's World Cup matches in Colombo due to India's host role

Pakistan will play all their women's 50-over World Cup matches in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo when India hosts this year's tournament, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Monday. Politically-estranged India and Pakistan, who have not played a bilateral series since 2013, will play their matches in neutral venues when either country hosts an ICC event, the sport's global governing body announced in December. "The venues for the knockouts are dependent on Pakistan qualifying as two alternative venues have been identified for one semi-final and the final," the ICC said. "Colombo will be the venue for the first semi-final and the final only if Pakistan qualify for those stages." Bengaluru, where the tournament will start with India playing in the opening match, will host the final on November 2 if Pakistan are knocked out earlier in the tournament, the ICC added. Bengaluru will also stage the second semi-final on October 30, a day after the first semi-final in Colombo or Guwahati. Visakhapatnam and Indore are the two other host cities for the eight-team tournament. India played all their matches in Dubai when Pakistan hosted the men's Champions Trophy this year, including the final which they won. Both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League were suspended last month amid clashes between the two countries following an attack targeting tourists that killed 26 people in Kashmir in April. Matches resumed after a ceasefire was announced. The neutral venue arrangement between the countries will also be in place for the men's T20 World Cup in 2026, which India will co-host with Sri Lanka, and the women's T20 World Cup in 2028 in Pakistan.
