UK man in court after Liverpool parade crash
A former British Marine held back tears Friday as he appeared in court for the first time, charged with driving his car into crowds celebrating Liverpool's Premier League win, leaving 79 people injured.
Paul Doyle faces seven counts, including dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily harm with intent during Monday's incident, which marred the northwestern English city's huge celebrations.
The 53-year-old was not required to enter a plea during a brief appearance at Liverpool Crown Court, where the judge set a provisional trial date for November 24.
Doyle, a father-of-three, was remanded in custody ahead of a hearing on August 14, when he is expected to either admit or deny the alleged offences.
Earlier, he confirmed his name, date of birth and address during a short appearance at Liverpool Magistrates' Court.
Doyle, wearing a black suit, white shirt and grey tie, held back tears after being brought into the court from the cells.
A total of 79 people aged between nine and 78 were injured when a dark Ford Galaxy ploughed into Liverpool supporters as they celebrated their club's record-equalling 20th English top-flight title.
There were no fatalities.
Prosecutor Philip Astbury told the court: "This is very much an ongoing investigation. There are many witnesses to be interviewed and a great deal of CCTV to be analysed."
Seven people remained in hospital, Merseyside Police assistant chief constable Jenny Sims told reporters on Thursday.
Sarah Hammond of the Crown Prosecution Service said the agency had authorised police to charge Doyle following a "complex and ongoing investigation".
"This includes multiple pieces of video footage and numerous witness statements. It is important to ensure every victim gets the justice they deserve," Hammond said.
UK media have reported that Doyle, who lives in a suburb of Liverpool, is a businessman and former marine, with three teenage children.
Hammond said all charges "will be kept under review as the investigation progresses".

Hundreds of thousands of Reds fans had gathered in Liverpool city centre for the long parade led by the club's top players when scenes of joy turned to horror.
Images on social media showed the car ploughing through a crowd, running over people and others bouncing off its bonnet.
Four people, including one child, were trapped under the vehicle, which had to be lifted to remove them, fire services said.
In other clips circulating online, the car was seen being halted and swarmed by angry fans, who smashed the back windows as police sought to hold them back.
UK media reported that Doyle had been married for 20 years and now worked in cybersecurity.
Images on social networks showed him on holiday with his family in places such as Japan, India and Fiji.
Police quickly ruled out terrorism, as well as swiftly revealing the suspect was a white British man, in a rare move to quell misinformation online.
Almost a year ago, Liverpool and north England saw the worst riots in decades after false rumours spread that the attacker who stabbed three girls to death in nearby Southport was a Muslim immigrant.

JOHANNESBURG - What began as an ordinary date turned into tragedy when 30-year-old Olorato Mongale was murdered. Her body was dumped in Lombardy West in Johannesburg on Monday. Yet another case of gender based violence revealing a disturbing train of events, showing she may have been a victim of a syndicate targeting women. Since her body's discovery, the case has been moving at a staggering pace. Here's how it all unfolded. She was a well-accomplished communications professional and taught English in South Korea. The 30-year-old has held roles in government and private sector communications, including at the Free State Department of Economic Development and global consulting firm Oliver Wyman. The Fatal Date On the afternoon of 25 May, Mongale left her Athol residence for a date with a man she knew only as "John." CCTV footage and police accounts reveal she was picked up in a white VW Polo at around three in the afternoon. Less than two hours later, her lifeless body was discovered in nearby Lombardy West. Community members helped police locate the scene. Police Progress 26 May: Investigators track a VW Polo to a panel beater workshop in Phoenix, Durban. Traces of blood are discovered inside, and one man — the alleged owner of the car —is arrested. 28 May: Police name two suspects on the run, Fezile Ngubane and Philangenkosi Sibongokuhle Makhanya. 29 May: In a major breakthrough, police take the parents of one of the suspects into custody. The father is reportedly the owner of the VW Polo used in the crime, while the mother allegedly tipped off her son, allowing him to flee just moments before police arrived at his Inanda home. Bongani Mthimkhulu, a friend of Makhanya's has been added as a third suspect. Police breaking the backbone of syndicate Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says they are now investigating a possible syndicate that targets young women under the pretense of pursuing a love interest. "They propose to this young woman usually in malls, request to take them out on dates, and when they agree, that is when they plan to rob them," Mathe says. A Pattern of Violence The investigation further reveals that both Mthimkhulu and Makhanya had been arrested previously for kidnapping and robbery in Boksburg in April. In that case too, they were driving a white VW Polo. They have been on out on bail. Shootout in Amanzimtoti Also on 29 May, one of the prime suspects was gunned down in KwaZulu-Natal after opening fire on police. Law enforcement had tracked him to a residential complex in Amanzimtoti.

Comedian Russell Brand pleads not guilty to rape, sexual assault charges
LONDON - British comedian and actor Russell Brand pleaded not guilty Friday at a London criminal court to five charges of sexual offences including rape and sexual assault. The media personality turned anti-establishment influencer faces one count of rape, one of oral rape, two of sexual assault and one of indecent assault between 1999 and 2005, involving four women. Crowds were waiting as Brand, 49, arrived at Southwark Crown Court in an open-buttoned shirt and dark blazer for the plea hearing, after being granted conditional bail at a previous hearing. He gained international recognition as the husband of pop star Katy Perry, but is better known in the UK for his hyper-sexualised and often lewd comedy routines and TV and radio appearances in the early 2000s. Now living partly in the US, Brand appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court in central London earlier this month, where he showed no emotion as a prosecutor read out allegations against him. On Friday, Brand appeared in the dock flanked by two officers, where he stood stock-still and looked straight ahead as he delivered his pleas. He is now due to stand trial next year, on 3 June 2026. Prosecutors charged Brand following a police probe into allegations aired in a 2003 Channel 4 documentary. He is accused of raping one woman in a hotel room following an event in the southern Bournemouth area in 1999. Another charge relates to the oral rape and sexual assault of a woman in 2004 in central London. The accusations involve four women, including one who was a TV worker, and another who was a radio station worker at the time of the alleged assaults. In a video response on X after he was charged in April, Brand said he was "grateful" for the "opportunity" to defend himself. CONSERVATIVE GURU "I was a fool before I lived in the light of the Lord. I was a drug addict, a sex addict and an imbecile, but what I never was was a rapist. I've never engaged in non-consensual activity," he said in the video. Born in 1975 to working-class parents in Essex, east of London, Brand began his stand-up career as a teenager, eventually working as an MTV presenter and host of a Big Brother spin-off.
