These two Aussie spots were just named the best new restaurants in the world
Australians are pretty lucky to have many of the world's greatest restaurants right on our doorstep. With new venues swinging open their doors each month, we're almost too spoilt for choice. We've always known our restaurant scene is world-class, and so do the reviewers at Condé Nast Traveller. Last week, the award-winning travel publication dropped its 2025 Hot List of the best new restaurants that have opened (or reopened) in the past 12 months – and two of our very own Aussie venues made the cut.
The first is Saint Peter at the Grand National, a revolutionary 'nose-to-tail' seafood restaurant by Australia's most celebrated chef, Josh Niland, and his wife, Julie. Unsurprisingly, this restaurant also features on our list of the best restaurants in Australia – and you can check out the full round-up here.
In mid-2024, Saint Peter found a beautiful new home in Paddington's Grand National Hotel, which also features a walk-in bar and a 14-room luxury boutique hotel. The restaurant was previously located in a much smaller venue, just down the road on Oxford Street. While the second act of Saint Peter has found a new address, the game-changing dishes very much remain – think coral trout bone noodles, John dory liver pâté tarts, 12-day dry-aged yellowfin tuna, and even a sweet fudge made from the tuna's bone marrow.
The Nilands are proving unstoppable too, having just opened another brand-new restaurant, Catseye Pool Club, this week. Located at The Sundays – a sparkling new $30 million hotel on Hamilton Island – the venue stays true to Saint Peter's nose-to-tail ethos, while expanding the menu to feature premium land-based proteins and fresh produce from the Queensland coast.
The second Australian venue included in Condé Nast's list of the hottest new restaurant openings from the past year is Supernormal Brisbane – an Asian-influenced riverside eatery by hospo legend Andrew McConnell (the mastermind behind Gimlet, Apollo Inn, Marion, Builders Arms Hotel). While it shares its name with McConnell's beloved Melbourne original, which opened a decade ago, Supernormal Brisbane has been given a tropical makeover to match its breezy riverside setting.
Melbourne favourites, like the famous New England lobster rolls, have made their way onto the menu, but there's also plenty of new dishes to try, including roast Yamba prawns with a tangy shio koji sauce and a slow-cooked Szechuan lamb shoulder served with spiced chickpea and coriander. Price Tag singer Jessie J, 37, has remained in high spirits despite announcing she has been diagnosed with 'early breast cancer' and it's not the first of her health woes. Jessie J has faced a number of various health problems over the years. The 37-year-old has certainly not had an easy time of it, including facing a heartbreaking fertility diagnosis. It comes as the Price Tag singer and former judge on The Voice announced she has been diagnosed with 'early breast cancer'. Jessie is set to undergo surgery following her performance on stage later this month at the Summertime Ball. She has faced numerous health challenges, including being diagnosed with a cardiac condition at the age of eight, enduring a minor stroke at 17, and temporarily losing her hearing in 2020. As the Who You Are singer bravely jokes about 'living her breast life' ahead of her surgery, here's a look at some of the health woes the star has had to endure... Cardiac and stroke Jessie opened up about her rare heart condition that has affected her since she's been a child. The health problem, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, caused her to suffer a minor stroke when she was aged just 17 years old. Explaining she first was diagnosed at the age of eight, the condition affects the electrical system of the heart and causes symptoms like irregular heartbeats, tightness and shortness of breath. The condition runs in her family and her dad also suffers from it. The Flashlight singer explained how her parents shaped her positive attitude from a young age, never allowing the condition to get the better of her. Speaking to Australian, 9Now, she said: 'I think my mum and dad never allowed me to be defined by something that was a weakness. Ever since I was young it was like, 'Just get on with it. You can do this'.' Addressing a cancer gala audience in New York in 2020, Jessie told the star-studded crowd that she wrote her song 'Who You Are' when she was 18, after she 'had just had a minor stroke," admitting: "I thought that I was never going to get better. 'I feel so lucky that I was given a second chance at life,' she continued. 'So every day when I am able to do this, you have no idea how amazing it feels that I'm so lucky to be onstage and singing and living my dream.' Waking up 'completely deaf' Jessie had another shock when she woke up one morning "completely deaf" and unable to walk in a straight line. She was later diagnosed with Meniere's disease, a chronic inner ear disorder that can cause vertigo and tinnitus. The singing sensation recalled her experience with the condition telling her followers during an Instagram live: "I woke up and felt like I was completely deaf in my right ear, couldn't walk in a straight line." The Domino star shared an Instagram video explaining that she's spent a lot of her recent time "in and out of tests". "I was diagnosed with early breast cancer," mum-of-one Jessie disclosed as she spoke directly to her fans in the video. "Cancer sucks in any form, but I'm holding on to the word 'early'. "It's a very dramatic way to get a boob job. I am going to disappear for a bit after Summertime Ball to have my surgery, and I will come back with massive t**s and more music." Jessie captioned her moving video: "No (more) Secrets and is it too soon to do a remix called 'Living my breast life'? All jokes aside (You know it's one of the ways I get through hard times) "This last 2 months have been so amazing, and having this go on along side it on the sidelines has given me the most incredible perspective. Ultra rare 'Harbinger of Doom' fish washes up on popular tourist beach
A rare oarfish or 'doomsday fish' was found on a beach in Australia by a dog walker - and according to legend, the deep-sea species appearing on land is a very bad omen A fish claimed to be a sign of impending natural disaster has washed up on a beach in Australia. An oarfish - sometimes called the 'doomsday fish' - was found on Ocean Beach on Tasmania's west coast on Monday. The deep-sea creature lives thousands of feet below the surface of the ocean, and so is rarely seen by humans. In Japanese mythology, its appearance is seen as a bad omen, foretelling the later appearance of dangerous sea serpents or tsunamis. But Sybil Robertson, who was walking her dog along the beach when she spotted the nine-foot oarfish, said she was not aware of the apparent significance of her find at first. She was first alerted to its presence by a sea eagle, a bird of prey, which had taken interest in the washed-up creature. Ms Robertson, a resident of nearby Strahan, told the ABC: "I was watching a sea eagle flying around and I noticed it was coming down onto the beach and I thought, 'That's unusual, I don't often see them land on the beach. "I could see it was a long fish but I had no idea what kind of fish" "As I got closer, I could see the beautiful colouring around its head and the markings on it were fabulous." She snapped a few photos at the scene before later sharing them to a social media group called Citizen Scientists of Tasmania, where commenters identified it as an oarfish. Authorities were then contacted, and were urged to act quickly before more birds decided to feast on the fish. Samples were then collected and sent off to the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), an Australian government research agency. Earlier this year, the oarfish's unexpected appearance on a beach in the Canary Islands s parked a social media frenzy, attracting hundreds of thousands of likes and comments. Many referred to the Japanese folk legend of 'ryūgū no tsukai', which claims that the fish dwell beneath Japan's islands, only surfacing as an immediate portent of major earthquakes. Some even claim they surfaced shortly before the devastating 2011 quake, which left nearly 20,000 people dead. Voicing their fears after the Canary Islands sighting, one Instagram user commented: "Something bad is going to happen." Another wrote: "Usually, it means that an earthquake is coming when it appears to the surface of the water." And someone else penned: "Put that back and run, may be a tsunami coming." Despite the persistent myths surrounding the oarfish, a 2019 study by Japanese researchers said there was no evidence of any link between sightings of the species on land and tectonic activity.
