Australia teams power into semis at Hong Kong Sevens
Australia's rugby teams have both moved in sight of a famous weekend double at the Hong Kong Sevens after powering into the semi-finals in the iconic event's first year at the Kai Tak Stadium.
A hat-trick of tries from the in-form Henry Paterson enabled the men's outfit to crush Great Britain 34-5 in their quarter-final on Saturday, while the youthful women's team, led by an inspired performance from Faith Nathan, enjoyed an equally emphatic 35-5 victory over the US in their last-eight duel.

"We're super happy. We've talked about improving on every performance over the weekend, and while we started slow against New Zealand, every half since we've got better and better," said co-captain Hutchison, who's led from the front with his seemingly never-ending battery life.
After booking their spot in the quarters with a 28-12 win over Uruguay, thanks to tries from Hutchison, Aden Ekanayake, Matt Gonzalez and Maurice Longbottom, coach Liam Barry's side really hit their straps against an outgunned British outfit.
Paterson ignited the victory with the opening try and added another alongside scores from Jayden Blake and James "Jimmy the Jet" Turner as the Aussies went into halftime with a 22-0 lead amid the partying fans at the marquee sevens event's new home.

Paterson eased to his hat-trick in the second half with Henry Hutchison and Longbottom putting the game out of reach in a six-try demolition job to set up a semi-final with World Series leaders Argentina on Sunday.
Despite having Teagan Levi forced to rest with an injured knee, her big sister Maddison Levi continued to inspire the women's team as she went over for two more tries against the US on Saturday, the day after breaking the all-time Australia try-scoring record.
Levi's double took her tally to 191 but the star of the show this time was her fellow rocket woman Nathan, who had a sensational quarter-final, with two brilliant try-scoring breaks in the opening three minutes and a terrific tackle and turnover in the second half.
Kiiahla Duff scored the Aussies' other try in the five-score romp to help set up a semi-final against France on Sunday.
The Australian women had actually found their final group game against Japan more of a struggle as they eked out a 14-10 win with fine individual efforts from Bridget Clark and Nathan enough to send them through.

Zac Gallen, Diamondbacks staying optimistic despite brutal campaign
The post Zac Gallen, Diamondbacks staying optimistic despite brutal campaign appeared first on ClutchPoints. Just two years ago, the Arizona Diamondbacks made an improbable run to the World Series. But, in 2025, they've been struggling immensely and at this rate, won't even make the playoffs. Torey Lovullo's ball club sits in third place in the NL West with a 32-34 record. To make matters worse, the Diamondbacks just lost Corbin Burnes to season-ending Tommy John surgery. There is the possibility Arizona will sell at the trade deadline if things don't improve, but starter Zac Gallen made it clear there's really no panic in the locker room. They remain optimistic about a turnaround. Via Sports Illustrated: 'We have a good vibe in the clubhouse. Everybody's fine with where we're at. We just know we need to play better,' Said Gallen. 'I think the only concern is that we're just not playing up to the standard that we expect of ourselves, really.' Gallen believes the Diamondbacks can make a late-season surge like they have before: 'We weren't over .500 until game 90-something last year… I think you guys have seen what this team can do from a win-loss standpoint from when we've backed ourselves in the hole. 'One of the big things that Torey talked about is winning the inch. So I think just being a little bit more consistent… I think a lot of teams thought 2023 was a fluke, and then 2024, I think teams realized that '23 wasn't a fluke,' Gallen said. 'I think we've just got to take it up a notch and, like I said, just be a little bit more consistent.' Gallen does make a valid point. They're only two games below .500 as we speak and didn't move above .500 until late in the 2024 campaign. There's no question the Diamondbacks have the talent to be a playoff team. Many of the same players remain from the Fall Classic run, and the reality is that many of them simply aren't living up to expectations. That includes Gallen, who has an ERA over five so far. Merrill Kelly is the only consistent starter right now outside of Burnes, who is done for the year. Gallen, Brandon Pfaadt, and Eduardo Rodriguez all need to be a whole lot better if this group is going to be competitive. On a more positive note, the Diamondbacks ended a three-game skid on Monday night as Josh Naylor hit a walk-off Grand Slam. Offense has been a strength — pitching just needs to catch up. They will face the Seattle Mariners again on Tuesday evening. Mets, Padres urged to make Luis Robert Jr. trade
The post Mets, Padres urged to make Luis Robert Jr. trade appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Mets and San Diego Padres are teams vying to make a World Series appearance this season. Both teams lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 MLB Postseason and are trying to improve their lineup to make another run this time around. Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. is a player to keep an eye on ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline. There is quite literally no point in the White Sox keeping him on the roster, and a change of scenery is best for both sides. The Mets and Padres are two teams who could make a move for the outfielder, and according to ESPN, are urged to do so. Robert Jr. is not having a good season with the White Sox, but he has the potential to be a very good player. Injuries have taken over his career, and he has yet to really play a full season in the majors. In 2023, he played 145 games, which is the most in his career by a ton. The only other time he played at least 100 games was last season in their historically terrible campaign. This year, Robert Jr. is batting just .177 with five home runs and 24 RBIs. His Slugging Percentage is just .281, and he has a WAR of -0.1. He desperately needs a change of scenery. The Cuba native could be a great fit for the Padres. Bradford Doolittle of ESPN broke it down: 'The Padres have rolled out a motley collection of non-producers in left field, which has yielded them an overall slash line of .200/.248/.286 with four homers at the position. Upgrade opportunity! Luis Robert Jr. might work if the Padres are convinced he has nowhere to go but up, as his .546 OPS is barely above that of the Padres' left fielders. However, A.J. Preller handles it, San Diego can't leave this hole unfilled.' As for the Mets, they need a center fielder. Doolittle thinks Robert Jr. could be a good fit for them, and he would play on the East Coast closer to home. 'Center is an obvious position of need for New York, which seems like a great landing spot for Luis Robert Jr.' It's unclear if the White Sox are motivated to want to move him right now, so closer to the deadline makes more sense. For now, the Padres aim to even the series against the Dodgers on Tuesday, and the Mets begin a series against the Washington Nationals. 1 trade Boston Red Sox must avoid making before 2025 deadline
The post 1 trade Boston Red Sox must avoid making before 2025 deadline appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Boston Red Sox are four games under .500, and they sit 9.0 games back in the American League East division. However, the Red Sox are just 4.5 games back in the Wild Card race. There is still plenty of time for Boston to make some noise with the Summer just getting started. The one problem for the Red Sox right now is they are without one of their best hitters, Alex Bregman. Bregman suffered a strained quad, and he has been out for quite some time. The bad news for Boston is Bregman is still a long time away from returning to the diamond. However, the Red Sox did promote top prospect Roman Anthony, and prospect Marcelo Meyer has not been play too bad. Boston will need some other players to step up a little bit more, especially on the mound. With that in mind, there is no need for the team to panic heading into the dog days of the season. The Red Sox do not need to necessarily become buyers at the deadline, but they should definitely not be sellers. In fact, there is one player that has been thrown around in trade conversations recently that Boston needs to hang on to. As mentioned, the Red Sox are not out of the playoff picture just yet. There have been plenty of teams in history to start a season under .500 and still make the postseason. Just last year, the Detroit Tigers started the year 37-44 through their first 81 games. When the Washington Nationals won the World Series in 2019, they started the season off 19-31. The Tigers fell short last year, but making the playoffs should be the goal for Boston. Once the postseason starts, anything can happen. In order for the Red Sox to get to the postseason, they need their pitchers to get better. On the season, Boston's starting pitchers have the fifth-highest ERA (4.59), sixth-highest WHIP (1.41), and the third-highest batting average against (.271). The starting pitching has been the biggest problem for the team, and it needs to be addressed. If the Red Sox can fix their problems on the mound, there is a chance for them to make the playoffs in 2025. Jarren Duran is slashing .271/.324/.421 with four home runs, 37 RBI, 37 runs scored, and 79 total hits in 67 games played. The left fielder has been great for the Red Sox this year, and he still has four years of team control. If a team were to trade for Duran, Boston would get a fantastic return. They would be able to rebuild their pitching staff, or get a couple more top prospect hitters. However, that would not be the smart move for the Major League team or the organization. The Red Sox need to hang on to their star left fielder. He is the future in the outfield for Boston, and has the potential to be a building block for the Red Sox to get back to the Fall Classic. The team has to find a way to keep competing with the New York Yankees and the rest of the division. Duran is going to be a big part of that. If Boston needs to trade some players this season, there are plenty of options. Jarren Duran should not be one of those options.
