'A voice of compassion': Hundreds pay tribute to Pope Francis at Abrahamic Family House
Pope Francis was remembered in Abu Dhabi on Thursday as a different type of pope who brought a message of hope and peace to the world. Archbishop Christophe El Kassis, Apostolic Nuncio to the UAE, said the late pontiff was a 'prophetic voice in our time'. In his homily at a special mass for the pope, Archbishop El Kassis, ambassador of the Vatican in the UAE, said the pontiff stood for the poor, the suffering and those left behind. 'From his first appearance as pope, he set a different tone – one of simplicity and closeness to the people,' said Archbishop El Kassis, at the mass at St Francis church at the Abrahamic Family House. 'He presented not an image of power but of service. Not a voice of judgment but of compassion.' The service took place at 7pm and was attended by a large congregation, including ambassadors, dignitaries, members of different faiths in the UAE, and worshippers in what was the official church memorial mass in the UAE for Pope Francis. The pews were packed and seats and screens were set up outside so everyone could take part in the service. Photos of the pope were placed outside the church and inside with the faithful paying their respects throughout the evening. Hymns drifted from the church out into the complex and incense hung in the air as the community came together to remember the late pontiff. The mass was presided over by Archbishop El Kassis and concelebrated by Paolo Martinelli, Apostolic vicar of Southern Arabia. Archbishop El Kassis reflected on how the pope chose the name Francis after St Francis of Assisi – the church is also named after this saint. He highlighted how Pope Francis embraced the disfigured and sick, washed the feet of prisoners, met with refugees and migrants, and called for the protection of the Earth. 'Among his most urgent appeals was a cry for peace, a rejection of war and violence – an appeal that he reiterated on Easter Sunday a few hours before he left this earthly life.' The UAE's one-million strong Catholic community has been in mourning since the pontiff's death on Monday from a stroke and heart failure after battling respiratory infection. Pope Francis's body is lying in state at the Vatican where crowds are continuing to pay their respects. His funeral will be on Saturday at 10am (noon UAE) and will be attended by world leaders. A special mass will also take place in Dubai at 7.30pm at St Mary's Church. Tens of thousands are expected. Thursday's official mass and Saturday's gathering is in addition to daily prayers being held at churches across the UAE. A book of commemoration has also been placed at St Joseph's Cathedral in Abu Dhabi. More than 100 cardinals under the age of 80 will vote for a papal successor in a secret ballot known as conclave. Pope Francis in 2019 became the first pontiff to visit the UAE where he held an open air mass in Zayed Sports City. 'Pope Francis made the first ever visit by a pope to the Arabian Peninsula by visiting this blessed land … the UAE,' said Archbishop El Kassis. He reflected on how the pope cosigned the Document on Human Fraternity with Dr Ahmed Al Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al Azhar. 'It was a profound testimony to mutual understanding … [and to the conviction] that peace among religions is essential to peace among the peoples.' He explained how the document emphasised mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and interreligious dialogue and laid the philosophical and spiritual groundwork for the Abrahamic Family House that opened in 2023. 'Today as we celebrate this holy mass in honour of Pope Francis, we do so with sorrow … but greater still is our thanksgiving,' he said. 'He has fought the good fight until the last minute of his life. He has finished the race. He has kept the faith.' And while worshippers are in mourning, it is also tinged with respect for the pope who made a real difference across the world. 'Tonight we are remembering and praying together for the soul of Pope Francis,' said Capuchin Fr Stefano Luca of St Francis Church. 'And his legacy as well.' Fr Luca said one of the reasons St Francis church was chosen as the venue for the official mass is because it is linked directly to the late pope. 'Being inside the Abrahamic Family House is a beacon for the world of coexistence, peace [and] friendship.' Despite his failing health, the pontiff appeared at St Peter's Square on Easter Sunday to greet people in his last appearance. Fr Luca said Pope's Francis's last words reflected on peace and human fraternity. 'This is something here in the UAE we will try our best to carry on – peace and human fraternity.' Klaudyne Marcaida, who attended the mass with her husband Ryan and daughter Claire, said Pope Francis was 'very close to my heart". 'When he died, it was very heartbreaking for me,' said Ms Marcaida, who is from the Philippines and has lived in Abu Dhabi for eight years.' 'The mass was very heartfelt," said Ms Marcaida, who was one of the volunteers during the Pope's visit in 2019, adding while everyone was sad, 'we know that Pope Francis is in a very good place right now'. The Abrahamic Family House is an interfaith complex on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, which also houses the Imam Al Tayeb Mosque and Moses Ben Maimon Synagogue. 'I had the distinct pleasure and honour of meeting Pope Francis twice,' said Abdulla Al Shehhi executive director of the Abrahamic Family House. 'And both meetings had quite an impact on me.' 'You see why millions of people around the world absolutely love him. He's a genuine good soul. I think history will look favourably and kindly upon him.' Mr Al Shehhi said he saw the pope only a few months ago to give him updates on St Francis church along with a video montage. 'His face was shining when he looked at it,' he said. 'He really, really loved what he saw and he was visibly touched by it,' he said. 'Pope Francis was a great advocate of peace and he consistently fought for it and negotiated for it and advocated for it. I think that's going to be his legacy here as well at the Abrahamic Family House.' Mr Al Shehhi said there were two main messages at the service on Thursday. 'First of all, of course, pray for the Pope and keep him in your thoughts and prayers,' he said. 'And the second message is to continue to uphold his legacy – continue to uphold the values that he lived for and he fought for and continue to be good human beings.'

Skills training in baking: OFWs join embassy workshop in celebration of OWWA anniversary
On 9th May 2025, 37-year-old Francis Llaneta, an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW), undertook a 1.5-hour bus journey from his home in Malkiya to the Philippine Embassy in Manama, located in Adliy, demonstrating his dedication to acquiring new skills. He was one of 38 attendees enthusiastic to learn the art and science of baking. The two-Friday baking skills training initiative is part of the celebrations marking the 43rd anniversary of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA). The program scheduled on May 9 and May 23 is jointly coordinated with the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) and Pinay Ikaw Na (PIN), reflecting a collaborative effort to empower the Filipino community overseas. Francis stated in an interview, 'I participated in the training because it presented an opportunity for me to enhance my skills, which I aspire to apply upon my return home.' Francis has been residing in Bahrain for over two years, working as a massage therapist. He was joined by other Filipinos from various professions in Bahrain. The training course also had a multi-gathering group, composed of housemaids, nurses, receptionists, and salesladies united in a common goal of learning something new and broadening their perspective. In her warm welcome address, OWWA Welfare Officer Juvilyn Anns Gumabay expressed OWWA's deep appreciation to both the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) and Pinay Ikaw Na (PIN), acknowledging the synergistic efforts of these organizations in providing comprehensive support and empowering Filipino workers navigating life abroad. Furthermore, Gumabay extended sincere thanks to the attendees for their participation and commitment to learning about and supporting OWWA's programs for OFWs. The presence of the participants signifies a collective desire to contribute to the success and well-being of the Filipino community in Bahrain. Ana, president of PIN, said, 'This baking training offers the participants a chance not only to learn a valuable skill, but also to network with fellow Filipinos and build a sense of community.' She expressed her sincere gratitude to all the participants for their presence and acknowledged the hard work of the PIN officers who worked diligently to enable the smooth flow of the program, making it successful and effective. Their commitment to community service is proof of PIN's vision to enhance Filipino culture, empowerment, and unity. The baking training aims to equip the participants with practical skills that can benefit from personal enrichment, potential income, or even future entrepreneurial ventures. They will learn the basic baking techniques, recipes, and tips for delectable confections. Attendees were led and guided by Ms. Ivy Ancheta, a professional baking instructor and entrepreneur of IVBakes, who graciously imparted her skills and expertise in the craft to shape her students and transform them into confident creators. Her patient and encouraging teaching techniques created a supportive learning environment, where questions were attended to and slips were seen as opportunities for growth. 'This training is really great help for us. Brazilian nun who was the world's oldest person has died at 116
Sister Inah Canabarro, a Brazilian nun and teacher who was the world's oldest person, died on Wednesday just weeks short of turning 117, her religious congregation said. Canabarro died at home of natural causes, said her Teresian nun congregation, the Company of Saint Teresa of Jesus. She was confirmed in January as the world's oldest person by LongeviQuest, an organization that tracks supercentenarians around the globe. She would have turned 117 on May 27. According to LongeviQuest, the world's oldest person is now Ethel Caterham, a 115-year-old British woman. Canabarro said her Catholic faith was the key to her longevity, in a video taken by LongeviQuest in February 2024. The smiling Canabarro can be seen cracking jokes, sharing miniature paintings she used to make of wild flowers and reciting the Hail Mary prayer. "I'm young, pretty and friendly - all very good, positive qualities that you have too," the Teresian nun told the visitors to her retirement home in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre. As a child, Sister Inah Canabarro was so skinny that many people didn't think she would survive into adulthood, Cleber Canabarro, her 84-year-old nephew, told The Associated Press in January. Her great-grandfather was a famed Brazilian general who took up arms during the turbulent period following Brazil's independence from Portugal in the 19th century. She took up religious work while she was a teenager and spent two years in Montevideo, Uruguay, before moving to Rio de Janeiro and eventually settling in her home state of Rio Grande do Sul. A lifelong teacher, among her former students was Gen. Joao Figueiredo, the last of the military dictators who governed Brazil between 1964 and 1985. She was also the beloved creator of two marching bands at schools in sister cities straddling the border between Uruguay and Brazil. For her 110th birthday, she was honored by Pope Francis. She was the second oldest nun ever documented, after Lucile Randon, who was the world's oldest person until her death in 2023 at the age of 118. Canabarro took the title of the oldest living person following the death of Japan's Tomiko Itooka in December, according to LongeviQuest. She ranked as the 20th oldest documented person to have ever lived, a list topped by Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 at the age of 122, according to LongeviQuest. "Her long and meaningful life touched many, and her legacy as a devoted educator, religious sister, and a supercentenarian will be remembered with great admiration," LongeviQuest said in a statement. Watch: Thousands of Dubai residents pay tributes to Pope Francis at memorial mass in St. Mary's Church
Dubai: Thousands of Dubai residents paid their tributes and prayed for Pope Francis at a special memorial mass held in St. Mary's Church on Saturday evening. The memorial mass began at 7:30 pm, just hours after the pontiff was laid to rest in Rome following a Vatican funeral for the "pope among the people," attended by hundreds of thousands of mourners and world leaders, including US President Donald Trump and Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. Decorated photos of the Pope were displayed both inside and outside the church. Several screens were set up for those who could not enter the church to watch the ceremony from the church premises. A massive photo of the Pope, accompanied by the message "With deep sorrow and heartfelt prayers," greeted worshippers outside the church. Another photo, decorated with flowers and candles, was placed next to the altar inside the church. The altar for the special requiem mass also held a special connection with the late pontiff—it was the same altar he had celebrated Mass at when he visited Abu Dhabi in 2019. People of all ages and from different walks of life came together in solemn remembrance of one who was described as "the shepherd who led with humility, spoke with courage, and loved without measure." "I love him very much" Twelve-year-old Kestorr Joe Fernandes attended in a wheelchair after recently fracturing his leg. An altar server at the church, the Grade Seven student didn't want to miss the special mass for the Pope, whom he "loves very much." 'I really missed serving the altar today, but I'm glad I could come and pray for our beloved Pope,' he said. Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity His father, Henry Fernandes, operations manager with an insurance company, said he was one of the blessed followers who got the chance to serve the pontiff during his Abu Dhabi visit in 2019. 'I had joined as a lay minister in 2018, and I received that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to serve the Pope the very next year. This whole week, we have been closely following every development related to the Pope, and earlier today we watched his funeral on TV. He was a great example to the world. Peace was his motto, and he practised what he preached. He will live in our hearts forever,' added the Indian expat. His legacy will live on Merisa Saveret, a Filipina housemaid, came with some of her friends. She said: 'We came because we really honour our Pope for his kindness, goodness, and all the good deeds and words he left behind. His pilgrimage in this earthly world has ended, but his legacy will live on and continue to guide us through our faith.' Several non-Catholic Christians were also present at the mass, while people of different faiths joined in a memorial service that followed. Huzefa Shabbir Necklace, one of the members of the Dawoodi Bohra community who attended the memorial service, said: 'Pope Francis was very beloved amongst everyone, and he's a renowned person—a personality imparting humanity, charity, and towards a lot of other communities as well. And in his remembrance, when we were here today, St. Mary's Church made sure that every part, especially the video that was shown, was something impactful for everyone. I was not completely aware of his kindness towards the world, but today, we understood it in depth. We see all these people surrounding and other people respecting him for that fact. And especially, I came to know that 1.2 billion people are following him. That's a huge crowd.' Charming, heroic leader At the requiem mass, Fr. Lennie J.A. Connully, Parish Priest, welcomed the gathering to the special prayer for the "charming and heroic leader of the Catholic Church." "His earthly privilege has come to an end, and he has gone to his eternal grace. And we are all gathered here to pray for him,' he said. Bishop Paolo Martinelli, Apostolic Vicar of Southern Arabia, led the prayer in the presence of Archbishop Christophe Zakhia El Kassis, Apostolic Nuncio to the UAE and Yemen. Bishop Martinelli recalled the great deeds of the Pope in spreading the message of peace and reuniting nations, serving the poor, and even washing the feet of prisoners. He called upon the believers to follow the path of fraternity that was led by the Pope. "I invite you to follow Pope Francis to be merciful. Let us love one another because love comes from God. Together in unity we form one body even if we are different," he said. Archbishop El-Kassis remembered the Pope's visit to the UAE on the invitation of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the then Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, for a historic visit during which the Pope co-signed the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together. He thanked Sheikh Mohamed as well as Sheikh Khaled, who attended the Pope's funeral. Special offerings As the believers said their prayers, children made special offerings of candles, rosaries, flower baskets, plants, and more. A bookmark of prayer in memory of the Pope was also distributed to the believers. During the memorial service that followed, people paid tribute to his enduring legacy. Several speakers noted that his memory would inspire them to walk the same path of compassion and hope.
