Sale sparkles as Braves snap seven-game skid by beating Brewers 7-1

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Chris Sale struck out a season-high 11 while allowing just one run over seven innings as the Atlanta Braves snapped a seven-game skid by beating the Milwaukee Brewers 7-1 on Monday.
Matt Olson, Ronald Acuña Jr. and Eli White homered to make sure the Braves avoided their first eight-game losing streak since 2016.
Sale (4-4) allowed just five hits and two walks. The reigning
NL Cy Young Award
winner has given up just four runs over 33 innings in his last five starts.
Atlanta led 5-1 when Sale left after walking Brice Turang to start the eighth. Raisel Iglesias took over for Sale and got three straight outs to lower his ERA to 6.48 before Dylan Lee worked the ninth.
Iglesias was pitching for the first time since allowing three runs over two-thirds of an inning Thursday in an
11-10 loss
to Arizona, a game in which the Braves blew a 10-4 lead in the ninth.
The Braves failed to score after having two on with none out in the second and fourth innings, but they finally broke through in the fifth.
Olson greeted DL Hall with a two-run, two-out homer in the fifth to put the Braves ahead for good after Acuña had tied the game by going deep off Aaron Civale (1-2) earlier in the inning.
White greeted Grant Anderson with a two-run shot of his own in the eighth, and Marcell Ozuna hit a two-run single off Anderson in the ninth.
Milwaukee's only run came in the third inning. Joey Ortiz hit a leadoff double and scored on William Contreras' two-out single.
Key moment
The Atlanta bullpen that has struggled so mightily during this slump did its job Monday. Iglesias and Lee retired six straight batters while combining for four strikeouts.
Key stat
Atlanta's Ozzie Albies got his 1,000th career hit when he singled to left in the eighth inning.
Up next
The second game of this series Tuesday is a matchup of right-handers, with Grant Holmes (3-4, 3.99 ERA) starting for Atlanta and Quinn Priester (3-2, 3.88) pitching for Milwaukee.

Brewers calling up top pitching prospect who throws 103 MPH

The post Brewers calling up top pitching prospect who throws 103 MPH appeared first on ClutchPoints. The time has come for the Milwaukee Brewers to call up their top pitching prospect, Jacob Misiorowski. The right-hander is MLB Pipeline's No. 30 overall prospect, and he has the potential to be an elite strikeout pitcher. Misiorowski can reach 103 MPH on his fastball. The MLB is starting to see this velocity more and more, and while it can be dangerous, it is fun to see. Misiorowski is a former second-round pick out of Crowder College. At 23 years old, he is entering the prime of his career, and his minor league numbers were too good to wait any longer. According to Baseball Reference, in 13 appearances and 12 starts this season in the minors, the right-hander is 4-2 with a 2.13 ERA, with 80 strikeouts, 31 walks, and 1.09 WHIP in 63.1 innings. He adds a 5.4 H9, 0.6 HR9, 4.4 BB9, and 11.4 SO9. He is more than ready to make his MLB Debut, which will be this Thursday against the St. Louis Cardinals at home. Milwaukee has been dealing with a few pitching injuries, so this move is coming at the right time. Brandon Woodruff has more injury concerns, and his return to the rotation has been delayed after a recent injury scare. Milwaukee isn't calling up Misiorowski with the intention of sending him back down. If the young hurler pitches well, he will keep a rotation spot. When healthy, a rotation filled with Misiorowski, Woodruff, Freddy Peralta, Jose Quintana, and Aaron Civale is respectable. Chad Patrick and Quinn Priester have pitched well this season and deserve to be in contention. They also have Logan Henderson, who is off to a fantastic start to his MLB career. However, he was optioned to Triple-A on Monday. With Woodruff not expected back for a few more weeks, the Brewers could continue with a six-man rotation in the meantime. At 36 years old, Quintana is still pitching well enough to keep a starting position. The Brewers are coming off a 7-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Monday for Game 1 of the 3-game series. They aim to bounce back and win the series ahead of the debut on Thursday for Misiorowski.

Braves React to Ozzie Albies' History Amid Season

Braves React to Ozzie Albies' History Amid Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Atlanta Braves made history in Milwaukee, not just because they snapped a seven-game losing streak or because Chris Sale struck out seven batters. Advertisement Yes, both of those things happened during Atlanta's 7-1 win, but the most memorable moment came from second baseman Ozzie Albies. Albies picked up two hits, scored a run, and in doing so, notched the 1,000th hit of his Major League Baseball career, a rare milestone few players ever reach. Following the game, the Braves celebrated their veteran infielder's achievement on social media with a simple but powerful message: "History made: 1,000 hits and counting." Albies' first hit of the night, and the 999th of his career, came in the sixth inning with a one-out single to left field. He was left stranded that inning. Then, in the eighth, he singled to left again to reach 1,000 hits. Teammate Eli White followed with a home run that scored Albies and extended the Braves' lead to 7-1. Advertisement The 28-year-old from Curacao has had a slow start to the 2025 season. Through 65 games and 250 at-bats, he's batting just .236, currently a career low. He's hit six home runs and driven in 24 runs so far this season. Ozzie Albies of the Atlanta BravesBrett Davis-Imagn Images In 2024, Albies dealt with injuries and was limited to just 99 games, though he still managed to collect 100 hits. Since signing with Atlanta in July 2013, Albies has spent his entire career with the Braves. Albies has built an impressive resume, including three All-Star selections, two Silver Slugger Awards, two All-MLB Second Team honors, and a World Series title from 2021. Ozzie Albies now ranks 50th on the all-time hit list among active MLB players. He trails Tommy Pham by 15 hits for the 49th spot. Just ahead in the chase are Cody Bellinger, who sits at 999 hits, and Juan Soto with 991. Advertisement Despite the win, the Braves have struggled overall. Heading into Tuesday, they sat at 28-37, placing them fourth in the National League East and 13.5 games behind the division-leading New York Mets. While Albies' personal milestone was a bright spot, the Braves will need more than individual achievements to turn their season around. Milwaukee Brewers' Top Prospect Jacob Misirowski Has 103-MPH Fastball

The Milwaukee Brewers are bringing up Jacob Misiorowski's 103-mile-an-hour fastball to face the ultimate test against MLB hitters. The Brewers don't even want the slender 6-foot-7 right-hander throwing that fast all the time. They would prefer he mix in his sharp curveball and slider while continuing to try and master a changeup, too. 'Part of maturing is understanding your level of effort,' manager Pat Murphy told Adam McCalvy of in spring training. 'Because you can throw it 100 mph doesn't really mean anything. It's being able to command what you can command. You might be better to command 98 and having your variety of pitches and staying ahead in the count, rather than being all heat and being behind 3-and-1 and having 30-pitch innings. You're not going to get to the big leagues having 30-pitch innings. 'He's a smart kid. He'll get it. I think he's got a great future.' (Photo by Chris Bernacchi/Diamond Images via Getty Images) Misiorowski 'got it' this season at Triple-A Nashville. He struck out 80 and allowed a measly 38 hits across 63 1/3 innings. He did it by throwing all his pitches, highlighted by the heater. When he fanned 11 in a masterful mid-May outing, however, Nashville manager Rick Sweet talked more about the changeup than other pitches. 'It just adds to everything he does,' Sweet told Ben Weinrib of 'When you get a power pitcher like that, in my career, you see guys, they get high pitch counts early because guys foul them off. You throw a changeup like he has now, that's a swing and miss pitch, and that finishes off.' Misiorowski already one of the longest names in the game at 11 letters. He's already the biggest name from Grain Valley. Mo., 23 miles east of Kansas City. There he was an all-state pick with a 9-2 record and 1.48 ERA as a junior for the Grain Valley High School Eagles. His senior season was wiped out by the Covid-19 outbreak and he signed to play at Oklahoma, then changed his mind. He went to Crowder College, 160 miles almost due south in Neosho, Mo. That put him on the Brewers' radar even before he compiled a 10-0 record with a 2.72 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 76 innings. (Photo by) The Brewers had selected left-hander Andy Ashby from Crowder in the fourth round in 2018. He recently rejoined Milwaukee's rotation from a stint on the injured list. Ashby got $520,000 to sign as the 125th overall choice. Misiorowski got $2.35 million as pick No. 63 four years later. That kept him from transferring to Louisiana State as planned. 'I'm just a kid from Grain Valley who always had a dream to play pro ball and here we are now!' he said then. In 68 games including 55 starts in the minors, Misiorowski has yielded only 138 hits in 233 2/3 innings. His ratio of 5.3 hits per nine innings is much better than what such notable stars as Max Scherzer, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and Justin Verlander achieved before throwing a pitch in the majors. (Photo by Ron Vesely/MLB Photos via Getty Images) His ratio of 12.3 strikeouts per nine innings, is better than anyone has achieved for a career in the big leagues. The one area where he needs to significantly improve is walks. He has walked 5.4 per innings as a pro (140 in 233 2/3 innings). It is doubtful that he would have a long career in the majors with such a ratio. It would rank second-worst all-time to 1958 Cy Young winner Bob Turley's, 5.6 for his career. Turley had only a 4.7 ratio when he went 21-7 for the New York Yankees and won the 1958 Cy Young Award. When he went 14-15 for the 1954 Baltimore Orioles, 'Bullet Bob' led the Al strikeouts (185) AND walks (181) Misiorowski did lower his walks to 4.4 per nine this year at Nashville. That's still in the range of what notorious wild men Sam McDowell (4.74) and Nolan Ryan (4.67) did in their MLB careers. Fans were excited to see the big prospect in Milwaukee's Spring Breakout game against the Cincinnati Reds on March 16, One look at him warming up showed the kid was something special. As did getting four strikeouts and a groundout. But the rest of the results were disastrous. MESA, AZ: Jacob Misiorowski of the Milwaukee Brewers pitches in a spring training game against the ... In the second, he walked the first batter and sent him to second with a balk. After two strikeouts, he fired a wild pitch, gave up an RBI triple and was replaced. He didn't hang his head when reassigned to the minors. Misiorowski worked on all his pitches, which set up the fastball. On May 15, one of his offerings was timed at 103, the fastest in the game at any level this year. Misiorowski, 23, needs to refine his release point, something that such tall pitchers find challenging. Johnson struggled for years in that regard. It may take just as long with the Brewers' big fella. There are a lot of moving parts and getting everything in sync can be tough – but must be done to consistently throw strikes. He also needs a nickname. Frankly, typing Misiorowski. It's about as easy for me as it is for him to consistently throw strikes. 'Swing And Mis' sounds good, but just as long though not as challenging to type. 'Big Jake'? Maybe. 'The Miz'? Possibly. Anybody have a clue? Leave it in the comments below.
