South Africa to Celebrate Eid Al Fitr on March 31
Rabat– Muslims across South Africa will celebrate Eid Al Fitr on Monday March 31, 2025.
The official announcement came after religious authorities confirmed the visibility of the Shawwal moon, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
The Islamic month of Shawwal commences with the festive celebration of Eid Al Fitr, meaning 'the celebration of breaking the fast', a much-anticipated celebration after a month of fasting and prayer.
Ramadan is not only a month of abstaining from food, drink, and carnal pleasures from the first light of dawn to the setting of the sun; it is also a month to tend to one's soul and relationship with Allah and others.
Muslims are rewarded with Eid Al-Fitr every year, as an occasion to celebrate themselves and each other.
For Muslims worldwide, Eid Al Fitr is a day of prayer, and South Africa is no exception, with mosques all over the country hosting early morning Eid prayers and thousands expected to attend.
In line with the spirit of Eid, community leaders have urged the public to embrace the spirit of generosity and compassion by engaging in charitable acts and supporting those in need, mainly through the Islamic pillar of Zakat.
Following the teachings of Prophet Mohammad (SAW), Muslims are also urged to focus on upkeeping and strengthening of blood ties by visiting, or at least calling, their family members wherever they might be and regardless of any disputes.
South Africa is home to 654,064 Muslims, comprising 1.5% of the population.

Doha – Mohamed has secured the top position as the most common surname in Ceuta, according to data released by the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE) for 2024. According to local media, a total of 7,750 residents of the Spanish North African enclave carry Mohamed as their first surname, while 7,479 have it as their second surname. Additionally, 1,731 people in Ceuta have the double surname combination of Mohamed Mohamed. Ahmed ranks as the second most frequent surname in Ceuta with 3,097 residents carrying it as their first surname and 2,880 as their second. The Spanish surname García takes third place with 2,217 and 2,059 people having it as first and second surnames respectively. The list of top ten surnames in the enclave continues with Abdeselam, Sánchez, González, Rodríguez, López, Pérez, and Fernández. Completing the top fifteen are Martín, Ruiz, Jiménez, Gómez, and Abdelkader. Rabat – Over 30,000 Moroccans are part of over 1.5 million Muslims who are praying today at Mount Arafat, one of the key Hajj rituals. As part of the Islamic pilgrimage, millions of Muslims ascend the mount, which is a 70-meter-high hill situated 20 kilometers from Mecca. The day commemorates the final sermon delivered by the Prophet Muhammad. Pilgrims spend the entire day — from dawn to sunset — praying. The day is seen as an opportunity for deep spiritual reflection and connection with God. Missing the Arafat ritual invalidates the Hajj. Millions of Muslims across the world fast during the Arafat ritual. In Islam, this is believed to expiate the sins of the previous year and the coming year. Eid al-Adha : Inmates can receive family visits but without meal baskets
On the occasion of Eid al-Adha, the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) announced that, starting the Monday following Eid, inmates in Moroccan penitentiaries will be allowed visits from family, friends, as well as representatives from diplomatic and consular missions for foreign detainees. However, these visits will not include the delivery of food parcels. Additionally, a special meal program will be provided to the inmates during this period, the Delegation stated in a press release on Wednesday. Given the deep religious and social significance of Eid al-Adha in Moroccan society, the celebration will take place within the prisons without performing the sacrificial ritual. This decision respects the royal directive to abstain from carrying out the Eid sacrifice, the statement added.
