Midjourney launches V1 model that converts still images into videos

Midjourney launches V1 model that converts still images into videos

Hindustan Times20 hours ago

Midjourney, a well-known generative AI startup, made a big announcement on Wednesday, June 18. They released their new video generation model called V1. This is an image-to-video generation model that uses images uploaded by the user or generated by AI to generate a short video. This feature requires a premium subscription to generate videos.
The core appeal of V1 is its ease of use; users can upload an image or select one that has just been created by Midjourney itself. Midjourney provides a gallery feature that shows all the images generated by you. Now, all that is left is to hit the Animate button and it will generate a five-second video for that image.
High motion and Low motion are the two settings to adjust the movements in the video. Low motion is best for the ambient scenes where the camera mostly stays still and the object moves in slow motion. Now, the downside is that sometimes the video doesn't even appear to be moving at all.
High motion is for situations where you want everything, including the camera and the subject, to move. Now, this fast motion may generate artefacts or wonky mistakes. So you need to choose accordingly or you can just try both to see which one works better.
After generating a five-second video, V1 can be instructed to increase the video length, which can be done up to four times to make the video about 20 seconds long. With this, the new V1 model from Midjourney is directly competing with the leading video generation models from AI giants like Google and OpenAI.
The Midjourney V1 is available on the web only for now and for the pricing, Midjourney is charging eight times more for video generation compared to image generation. And for that charge, it generates four videos, 5 seconds each, to select the one that suits your needs.

Mark Zuckerberg is spending megabucks on an AI hiring spree

When Mark Zuckerberg decided to launch his quest for the metaverse in 2021, he threw fistfuls of cash at the effort. Meta's boss is now repeating the act, this time with generative artificial intelligence (AI). Hot on the heels of what may be the world's most expensive acquihire—a $14.3bn deal to buy 49% of Scale AI, a data-labelling firm whose main asset is Alexandr Wang, its 28-year-old founder—people close to the matter say Mr Zuckerberg is planning to offer more than $1bn combined for two of Silicon Valley's hottest AI brain boxes, who would work under Mr Wang. It marks the start of a reset of Meta's generative-AI ambitions. Meta has made no comment, but if the deal goes through Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross, entrepreneurs and partners in a venture-capital (VC) firm called NFDG, will work in Meta's 'superintelligence" unit under Mr Wang, one of America's youngest self-made billionaires. The word 'superintelligence" is somewhat misleading. Rather than ground-breaking AI research, the team is expected to focus on developing new AI products for Meta, some of whose recent efforts, including its latest Llama model and the Meta AI chatbot, have disappointed. Someone who knows all three men calls the trio 'the avengers". He reckons they will have huge additional sums at their disposal to hire top AI researchers in order to unseat OpenAI, maker of ChatGPT, as the dominant generative-AI firm. 'They're going to go big," he says. Indeed, there appear to be few limits on what Meta is prepared to spend. On June 17th Sam Altman, the boss of OpenAI, said on a podcast that Meta was offering signing bonuses of $100m to poach his staff. Another person close to the situation says Mr Zuckerberg sought to hire Ilya Sutskever, the brains behind ChatGPT and co-founder of Safe Superintelligence (SSI), another hot AI startup, to work at Meta, though he was unsuccessful. 'He is throwing insane amounts of money at people," the person said. The gambit shows Mr Zuckerberg's continued willingness to make mighty, long-term bets to reinvent his firm, even if his foray into the metaverse has been a costly flop. 'This is very Zuckerbergian to do these big, loud stunts just to prove how committed he is," says Eric Seufert, an independent tech analyst. And while the sums are big, they may not be as reckless as some pundits argued when reports surfaced that Meta was buying its stake in Scale AI, considering how much of Meta's $1.7trn market value is riding on its success in AI. The acquisitions also involve people with close personal ties and shared ideals. Mr Friedman, former boss of GitHub, a software-development platform owned by Microsoft, is friends with Mr Zuckerberg. He is part of Meta's Advisory Group, which provides guidance to the company. And, like Mr Zuckerberg, he is a lover of ancient Rome. He and Mr Gross helped launch a contest called the Vesuvius Challenge to decode scrolls buried in Herculaneum after Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD. Mr Friedman and Mr Gross are savvy AI investors. Some call their VC firm the AI equivalent of Andreessen Horowitz, a Silicon Valley juggernaut born out of the dotcom boom. Mr Friedman invested in Scale AI and is close to Mr Wang. Mr Gross is a co-founder of Mr Sutskever's SSI, which was recently valued at $32bn less than a year after its birth. It is not clear what will happen to NFDG. People who know the two say that joining Meta appeals not only for the generous terms, but also the excitement of working for an AI heavyweight and the money and computing power it will put at their disposal. 'This is the tech battle of our time," says one person close to the pair. Mr Zuckerberg intends to win.

Indian Govt Has A New Security Alert For Chrome Users: Possible Hacking Threat Issued

Last Updated: Chrome security risk alert issued by the Indian government highlights the ongoing concerns with the popular web browser. The Indian government has issued a new security risk warning from Google Chrome users which can leave them vulnerable to hacking threats. The latest Chrome security warning dated June 18, comes via the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) with a high severity rating which is always a concern for millions of Chrome users in the country, both on Windows and Mac. These security alerts have become quite frequent but also ensure that people are being informed about the issues facing some of the popular apps and software. The latest security issue facing Chrome users is linked to some of the internal components that can only be fixed by Google. 'Multiple vulnerabilities exist in Google Chrome due to Integer overflow in V8 and Use after free in Profiler. A remote attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by persuading a victim to visit a specially crafted web page." Chrome is heavily used across the globe, which makes it an obvious target for hackers, especially when they have issues that can be exploited. The CERT-In note clearly suggests that a wide range of Windows and macOS Chrome versions are affected by the vulnerabilities and the details are given below: Google does have a hold on this serious situation, and has already worked on a patch that all Chrome users should install on their Windows, macOS or Linux systems right away. All you do to is follow these steps: Head over to the three-dot menu on Chrome – Settings – About – Update Chrome. Google has listed the security fixes that come with the stable channel update. The stable channel update has been issued and you have to make sure the Chrome running on your device is updated to the latest version to keep it protected from possible hacking or system access attempts. 16 Billion Logins Stolen In Mega Data Breach Threatening Apple, Google And More

In one of the largest data breaches in history, cybersecurity researchers have confirmed the leak of 16 billion login credentials, including passwords. The information leak can open the door to "pretty much any online service imaginable, from Apple, Facebook, and Google, to GitHub, Telegram, and various government services", according to a report in Forbes. The development comes in the backdrop of multiple reports highlighting the presence of a "mysterious database" containing 184 million records -- sitting unprotected on a web server. The latest research suggests that it may have been just the tip of the iceberg. As per the outlet, the researchers have uncovered 30 datasets, with each of them containing up to 3.5 billion records. The information, which includes social media and VPN logins as well as corporate and developer platforms, is contained in datasets that have been found since the start of 2025. "This is not just a leak - it's a blueprint for mass exploitation. These aren't just old breaches being recycled. This is fresh, weaponisable intelligence at scale," said the researchers. Researchers suggest that credential leaks at this scale can be exploited for phishing campaigns, account takeovers and business email compromise (BEC) attacks. "The fact that the credentials in question are of high value for widely used services carries with it far-reaching implications," said Darren Guccione, the CEO and co-founder of Keeper Security. Dump passwords: Google Such data breaches are of the reasons why Google has been advising its users to upgrade their Gmail account's security by moving on from older sign-in methods like passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA). The tech giant is pushing for users to upgrade accounts to passkeys as well as social sign-ins for better control over their accounts. "It's important to use tools that automatically secure your account and protect you from scams," the California-based company said. Passkeys is a login system that replaces passwords with biometric authentication via a trusted device like a smartphone. Google views passkeys as "phishing resistant", which can help users log in simply with the method they use to unlock their devices, which can include fingerprint recognition, facial scan, or the pattern lock.
