Book festival receives £300,000 to continue programme for schoolchildren

Independent5 hours ago

The Scottish Government has given a leading book festival £300,000 to continue its programme for schoolchildren.
Edinburgh International Book Festival is set to host more than 60 in-person and remote events this year for youngsters, with the Government funding set to support the programme for the next three years.
As well as funding support, the cash will also help with travel costs for attendees and provide free tickets to those unable to afford them.
Business minister Richard Lochhead said: 'The Edinburgh International Book Festival is one the country's most significant cultural institutions.
'Its schools programme has been crucial in fostering literacy and cultural engagement among young people, with thousands of pupils benefiting annually from free events and resources.
'This funding secures those benefits for young readers across Edinburgh, helping schools that might otherwise struggle with travel costs, and ensuring they have the same opportunity to take part in one of the world's leading literary festivals.'
Festival director Jenny Niven said the event's programme for a children is a 'cornerstone of what we do'.
She added: ' Publishing for children and young people has never been more vibrant, and the benefits of reading never better evidenced.
'The festival is perfectly positioned to help children engage with the amazing range and breadth of stories around them, to support teachers to use books imaginatively and creatively in learning, and to supply older kids with the tools to think critically, and learn to evaluate the deluge of info around them.
'This aspect of what we do is vital, and we're delighted to have specific public funding support to develop this work further in the coming years.
'We've identified the cost of transport as a key barrier to a wider cohort of schools joining us in August, and are committed to maintaining free access for as many children as possible.
'We're delighted that the Scottish Government's increased support for festivals has delivered public funding to develop this work further in the coming years, and we look forward to widening our reach across Scotland and exploring further the digital potential of what we do.'

M&S checkout operator hit by claims of fraud

A payments provider used by Marks & Spencer has become embroiled in a fraud scandal after it was accused of covering up fake transactions by some customers. Worldline, one of the world's largest payments groups, had its shares temporarily suspended on Wednesday after investors took fright at allegations it had processed some payments on behalf of scammers and had poor money-laundering controls. Shares in the French group plunged by nearly 40pc – knocking €300m (£256m) off its share price – because of the allegations, which claimed the business turned a blind-eye to a network of dubious customers. Worldline is one of the world's largest payments processors and moves payments around the financial system for UK high street giants including M&S, JD Sports and Aldi among others. There is no allegation that any of these Worldline customers knew or were involved in the claims or are accused of any wrongdoing. Risky strategy The Worldline claims were made by a consortium of 21 European newspapers, which alleged in its investigations that millions of euros worth of the French firm's revenues could be linked to 'high risk' customers. According to the allegations, the company is accused of ignoring red flags to take on clients from the 'internet's shady corners' as it took a risky strategy in its push to grow its revenues. In response, Worldline said it has strengthened its controls over the past two years, including terminating €130m worth of contracts with customers in breach of its compliance rules. 'Wherever the group identifies indications of non-compliant situations, additional checks are immediately undertaken, potentially leading to termination of the client relationship,' Worldline said. 'Worldline's Executive Management and Board of Directors are fully committed to strict compliance with regulation and risk prevention standards and to strictly enforce related rules and procedures with zero tolerance.' Worldline was accused of turning a 'blind eye' to some customers' dubious business practices, as it scrambled to boost its revenues by taking advantage of the higher rates paid by the shady clients, the investigation says. According to the claims, internal documents show Worldline processes hundreds of millions of euros worth of payments on behalf of such high-risk clients, including €50m in 2019 alone. Worldline had just two employees responsible for overseeing its money laundering processes, despite having hundreds of high-risk customers, the investigation added.

UK's Miliband vows to lead in clean energy, demand corporate net zero strategies

LONDON, June 24 (Reuters) - Cutting emissions and investing in the green economy put Britain on the right path, energy secretary Ed Miliband said on Wednesday, as he pledged to push large companies to detail exactly how they plan to align their businesses with the shift. The government is under pressure from opposition parties over the perceived costs of the shift to net zero emissions at a time when energy costs remain high following Europe's shift away from Russian energy imports over Moscow's 2022 Ukraine invasion. Speaking to a gathering of climate investors, scientists and civil society groups at London Climate Action Week, however, Miliband reiterated its commitment to decarbonising the economy and stimulating green business growth. "Our mission is to make Britain a clean energy superpower by accelerating to net zero across the economy," he told the flagship conference at the climate festival, which brings together over 45,000 delegates, attending more than 700 side events. Central to the plan will be requirements for large companies to set out detailed plans for how they will cut their carbon emissions to align with a target of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees of over pre-industrial levels. The government is also seeking to position London as a global sustainable finance hub. In a statement on Wednesday, it said it was weighing new sustainability reporting standards, which set out the information companies must provide to investors on sustainability-related financial risks and opportunities. Miliband said while increasingly severe weather events showed the urgency of the climate crisis, Russia's invasion of Ukraine and rising energy prices highlighted the need to deliver energy security from cheaper renewable sources. "Ours is ... a hard-headed determination to get off the roller coaster of fossil fuel markets with cheaper, clean, home-grown energy that we control," he said. Britain's plans to reach net zero by 2050 depend on its ability to slash energy prices to speed up the adoption of emission-curbing technology, such as electric vehicles and heat pumps, independent advisers to the government on climate change said on Wednesday. "By far the most important recommendation we have for the government is to reduce the cost of electricity both for households and businesses," Piers Forster, interim chair of the Committee on Climate Change, said at a briefing on its annual progress report. Miliband's comments on green growth followed the publication earlier in the week of Britain's new industrial strategy, which laid out plans to invest more than 30 billion pounds ($40.84 billion) a year by 2035 in areas such as renewable energy. New analysis overnight from the Energy Transitions Commission and consultants Systemiq found that 40% of the solutions needed to move the economy to net zero - for example twinning solar power and battery storage - were already more cost-effective than fossil fuels or would be by 2030. "We now need the right policies to enable other sectors of the economy to reach that tipping point, and to enable all countries to share in the economic opportunities created," said Energy Transitions Commission's chair Adair Turner.
