The collapse of a crucial network of Atlantic Ocean currents could push parts of the world into a deep freeze, with winter temperatures plunging to around minus 55 degrees Fahrenheit in some cities, bringing 'profound climate and societal impacts,' according to a new study.
There is increasing concern about the future of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation — known as the AMOC — a system of currents that works like a giant conveyor belt, pulling warm water from the Southern Hemisphere and tropics to the Northern Hemisphere, where it cools, sinks and flows back south.
Multiple studies suggest the AMOC is weakening with some projecting it could even collapse this century as global warming disrupts the balance of heat and salinity that keeps it moving. This would usher in huge global weather and climate shifts — including plunging temperatures in Europe, which relies on the AMOC for its mild climate.
What's less clear, however, is how these impacts will unfold in a world heated up by humans burning fossil fuels.
'What if the AMOC collapses and we have climate change? Does the cooling win or does the warming win?' asked René van Westen, a marine and atmospheric researcher at Utrecht University in the Netherlands and co-author of the paper published Wednesday in the Geophysical Research Letters journal.
This new study is the first to use a modern, complex climate model to answer the question, he told CNN.
The researchers looked at a scenario where the AMOC weakens by 80% and the Earth is around 2 degrees Celsius warmer than the period before humans began burning large amounts of fossil fuels. The planet is currently at 1.2 degrees of warming.
They focused on what would happen as the climate stabilized post-collapse, multiple decades into the future.
Even in this hotter world, they found 'substantial cooling' over Europe with sharp drops in average winter temperatures and more intense cold extremes — a very different picture than the United States, where the study found temperatures would continue to increase even with an AMOC collapse.
Sea ice would spread southward as far as Scandinavia, parts of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, the research found. This would have a huge impact on cold extremes as the white surface of the ice reflects the sun's energy back into space, amplifying cooling.
The scientists have created an interactive map to visualize the impacts of an AMOC collapse across the globe.
London, for example, could see winter cold extremes of minus 2.2 Fahrenheit , while Oslo could see temperatures as low as minus 55 Fahrenheit and endure maximum temperatures below 32 Fahrenheit for 46% of the year.
Parts of Europe will also become stormier, the study found. The increased temperature difference between northern and southern Europe will strengthen the jet stream and increase storm intensity over northwestern Europe.
It 'completely shifts the narrative, right?' van Westen said. 'Because now policy is planning for a warmer future, but maybe instead, we need to also prepare for a colder future.'
While cooling on an ever-hotter planet may sound like good news, van Westen warns it's anything but.
Society in many parts of the Northern Hemisphere 'is not built for these kind of cold extremes,' he said. Crops would die, threatening food security, and infrastructure could buckle.
What's more, the impacts of an AMOC collapse would mostly be felt in Europe's winter; it would still endure increasingly deadly heat waves in the summer as the climate crisis intensifies.
The Southern Hemisphere, meanwhile, is projected to experience increased warming.
The scientists also looked at the impacts of an AMOC collapse in an even hotter world. If global temperatures reach around 4 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, the heat outweighs the cooling impact of an AMOC collapse in Europe , van Westen said. 'The warming signal actually wins.'
But, he added, an AMOC collapse won't only affect temperatures. Other impacts include increased sea level rise, which will particularly affect the US, where a weaker AMOC is already driving significantly increased flooding on the northeastern coast, according to recent research.
Stefan Rahmstorf, a physical oceanographer at Potsdam University in Germany who was not involved in the latest research, said the study confirms 'an AMOC collapse would have massive impacts on European climate.'
The research uses only one climate model; others will rely on different models and will likely come up with a variety of scenarios, he told CNN. What ultimately happens will depend on the how the two opposing trends play out: AMOC-induced cooling and climate change-induced heating. A 'large uncertainty' remains, he said.
The study is 'by no means the last word' especially as huge questions remain over whether the AMOC could be on course to collapse, said Richard Allen, a climate science professor at the University of Reading, also not involved in the research. 'But even the mere possibility of this dire storyline unfolding over coming centuries underscores the need to forensically monitor what is happening in our oceans,' he said.
What is crystal clear is that an AMOC collapse would be very bad for society, van Westen said. 'We want to avoid it at all costs.'

Prenatal exposure to a class of dangerous, widely used chemicals could be linked to your child having high blood pressure as a teen, according to a new study. Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS — sometimes called 'forever chemicals' because they don't fully break down in the environment — are a class of about 15,000 human-made chemicals linked to cancers, endocrine-related conditions and developmental problems in children. New data shows the synthetic compounds could also be linked to a teen's risk of developing cardiovascular disease later in life, according to the study published Thursday in the Journal of the American Heart Association. Researchers looked at data from 1,094 children over an average of 12 years. The study team compared measurements of eight types of PFAS chemicals in maternal plasma samples 24 to 72 hours after birth and the children's blood pressure from medical records, according to the study. The kids who were exposed to higher levels of PFAS chemicals in utero were more likely to have higher blood pressure in childhood and adolescence, the research found. The connection was particularly strong in adolescents, male children and Black children, said senior study author Dr. Mingyu Zhang, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The study is observational, meaning that while it shows associations, it cannot prove that PFAS exposure is the cause of the elevated blood pressure, Zhang said. While researchers did adjust for other factors that could be at play, there could be other elements driving the connection between PFAS and blood pressure, he added. That said, the results are strong because this study is one of the largest and most diverse while also using rigorous methods, said Dr. Carmen Marsit, Rollins Distinguished Professor of Research at Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta. He was not involved in the research. The topic is important to investigate because if a child has high blood pressure, they are more likely to also have higher blood pressure later on, Zhang said. And that is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, the No. 1 cause of death in the United States. The largest effects were shown in adolescents who were exposed to a mixture of different PFAS chemicals during pregnancy compared with those who were not, which implies that there may be a synergistic impact on cardiometabolic health, Marsit said. 'Most children will be exposed to multiple different PFAS chemicals, so this is worrisome,' he said. The fact that adolescence is the age when prenatal exposure to PFAS is most linked with higher blood pressure suggests that some of the PFAS chemicals could take a long period of time to show their impacts, Marsit said. A long latency of the effects would mean that people don't just need to worry about reducing exposures, but interventions also need to be developed to prevent the health outcomes in people who were exposed earlier, he added. Not only are PFAS forever chemicals –– they also are everywhere chemicals. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey shows that this class of chemicals can be found in nearly every person in the United States, Marsit said in a previous CNN story. There are things you can do to reduce your exposure, however, he added. Major sources of exposure include food, water, and waterproof or stain-resistant items, Marsit said. Helpful steps include drinking filtered water –– using filters like those listed by the Environmental Working Group –– out of metal or glass containers, he said. Plastics contain PFAS and other toxic chemicals, Marsit said. A focus on fresh food can also help, as packaging for foods are often coated in PFAS chemicals, he added. And avoid using nonstick cookware, opting instead for metal, cast-iron or ceramic pots and pans, he said. Dusting, vacuuming, and washing your hands before eating or drinking can also reduce PFAS exposure, Marsit said. Healthy lifestyle choices can reduce the risk of high blood pressure for children who have been exposed to PFAS, Zhang said. 'These include maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, reducing salt intake, and encouraging physical activity,' he added. But ultimately, an individual cannot solve PFAS exposure alone, Zhang said. 'We also need policy-level actions to limit and phase out PFAS use in products and industry, and to strengthen monitoring and regulation of PFAS in water systems,' he added.

The world's bread baskets are heating up, threatening the global food supply. Climate change has already shrunk yields for major crops like wheat and maize, and crop losses are likely to worsen in the coming decades. But researchers are trying to avoid that future by helping plants deal with heat. 'There's a lot of excitement in identifying why it is that some crops that are grown in the most extreme conditions are able to survive,' said Carl Bernacchi, a crop researcher at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the author of one of a trio of papers on crop modification that were published Thursday in the journal Science. Farmers can help crops beat the heat with water-based cooling, but that method has limitations. Modifying crops, either through traditional crossbreeding, artificially sped-up mutation or direct genetic editing, offers control over how plants respond to heat. Photosynthesis, the process through which plants get energy, grinds to a halt between 40 and 45 degrees Celsius, or 104 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit, temperatures that are becoming more common in many of the world's agricultural regions. 'Photosynthesis really dictates the currency plants have to use,' Dr. Bernacchi said. 'If photosynthesis falters, plants run out of energy and die.' Dr. Bernacchi and his co-authors reviewed the potential of editing rubisco, the key enzyme that transforms carbon into sugar, and its partner, rubisco activase. In plants that grow in warm climates, rubisco activase seems to work better at helping rubisco function. Trust in your neighbours, institutions, and society writ large may be a key ingredient to a long and happy life, new research suggests. A study in the journal Psychological Bulletin found that people who are generally more trusting tend to report greater well-being, which measures people's mental health and how content they are with their lives – and is in turn tied to longevity and health. 'Our findings show that trust plays a key role in how happy and satisfied people feel, across all ages, especially so for children, adolescents, and older adults,' Catrin Finkenauer, one of the study's authors and a professor at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, said in a statement. Not so much, global survey finds For the new study, Finkenauer's team looked at three types of trust: interpersonal trust between people who know each other, trust in institutions like the government and banks, and social trust, or the belief that most people are 'honest, reliable, and benevolent'. They found that people who were more trusting – regardless of the type of trust – tended to report greater well-being. However, the link was stronger among children and teenagers than among adults up through middle age. Trust and well-being also appear to reinforce each other over time, according to the study, a meta-analysis that compiled data from more than 2.5 million people worldwide. It's not clear whether well-being directly causes health outcomes, but it has been linked to longer lifespans – four to 10 extra years, one analysis from the UK's Ministry of Health found – as well as better mental health and a lower risk of death from heart disease and cancer. Notably, not everyone appears to benefit from trust's boost to well-being. Last year, another study in 38 European countries found that racial and ethnic minorities report lower levels of trust, which can make them more unhappy and dissatisfied with life. But that same report found that building trust among minorities helps to boost their well-being, leading researchers to conclude that promoting trust can 'narrow the well-being gap' among people of different backgrounds. 'Trust can't be forced – it has to be earned,' Finkenauer said, adding that families, schools, and governments all bear responsibility for creating supportive, trusting environments. 'When we build trust, we also support mental health and stronger communities,' she said.
