As a frequent flier, I always look forward to a long-haul flight amenity kit. Cathay partnered with British-based Bamford, offering mini-sized versions of the brand's cooling gel, multi-purpose balm and pillow mist, leaning into a wellness theme. Initially, I wanted to see products from a more well-known luxury brand – but the products were quality and completely elevated the overnight experience. The leather case was a nice touch, too, and easy to reuse as a makeup bag or for smaller toiletries.

In-flight service began with an always-appreciated hot towel, warm nuts and a pretty swanky meal service for being 30,000 feet above the ground. Among the many options, I opted for an appetizer and main that are tied to two well-known Hong Kong Michelin star restaurants: the chilled abalone and cucumber with black vinegar from Duddell's and the pan-seared Chilean sea bass with saffron sauce from Louise, which is my all-time favourite restaurant in Hong Kong.

The Duddell's abalone certainly lived up to the hype, and is arguably one of the best items I've enjoyed in the sky on any flight. Louise's sea bass was decent, however, a tad bland, and not quite to par with what I've come to know and love from the restaurant itself (which I highly recommend on a visit to Hong Kong). Regardless, it was still an elevated choice considering – and I would get it again, but maybe add a little salt. Cheese, Häagen-Dazs ice cream or fresh fruit followed, for some simple but solid dessert options (although the ice cream was very frozen – beware!).

Dining has a leisurely vibe in-air on Cathay Pacific, which is ideal for someone who wants to immerse themselves in the entire multi-course experience. For those looking to get in a full night's sleep or get some work done, however, be mindful of the time to get dishes cleared. I'm a fast eater, so I opted to use the call button to speed up the process.

Where the menu truly stood out was on the all-day options, which could be requested at any time during the flight. Noodles (a popular choice) and a burger with fries are on the docket, both of which were excellent. Key detail: the fries were delicious and not soggy.

For those looking to indulge in a drink, the cocktail and wine lists were extensive, edging out Canadian competitors. The Chateau Lynch-Bages from Pauillac is a tried and true choice, but for those feeling experimental, Chinese wine – not readily available in North America – is available. On the non-alcoholic front, the Hong Kong-style milk tea appeared to be a popular choice with those on my flight.

Cautious Americans delay summer travel, await better deals
WASHINGTON, D.C. Forget bucket lists; this summer, it's all about budget lists. Amid economic uncertainty and a weaker dollar, Americans are growing cautious about travel. From flights and hotels to rental cars, many are delaying bookings or scaling back plans entirely, hoping to snag better deals closer to the date. It's a trend that's starting to worry the travel industry. Hotel bookings are flat or declining, and airline reservations are down—even though airfare has become cheaper. Big travel players like Delta, Marriott, and Booking Holdings have lowered or withdrawn their 2025 forecasts as U.S. demand softens. Airbnb also flagged that more users are waiting until the last minute to confirm trips. That hesitation has left companies with less visibility on what the second half of the year will look like. Delta said in April it was too early to predict the full-year outlook given current economic uncertainty. United Airlines echoed that, warning that bookings could slow further. "It's very clear that consumers are waiting to make decisions, including for the summer," said Southwest Airlines CEO Robert Jordan at a recent industry conference. He added that while demand is stable, it's lower than expected earlier this year. According to Flighthub, summer flight bookings in the U.S. are down 10 percent compared to last year despite a 7 percent drop in average prices. Long-haul flights are seeing even steeper discounts — with tickets to destinations like Sydney, Australia down 23 percent. "You can't keep an airline seat on the shelf in a warehouse," said Steve Hafner, CEO of Kayak. "If you don't fill that seat tomorrow and the airplane flies, it's gone." Hotel bookings are showing the same pattern. "They've actually fallen off, and it gets weaker like a month out," said Hyatt CEO Mark Hoplamazian. "By the time you get to that month, it recovers." CoStar data shows bookings in major U.S. cities are flat-to-down. Room rates are only expected to rise by 1.3 percent in 2025 — down from a 1.8 percent increase in 2024. "We're not getting that crazy pricing power we got in the early days of the recovery," said Marriott CEO Anthony Capuano. Some hotels are already sweetening deals, offering free nights or special packages to drive bookings. "That's what Jackie Lafferty is hoping for," the story notes. The Los Angeles PR director has shifted her plans from Hawaii or Florida to a California-based vacation. "By the time we broke down the cost of the flights, the hotel and the rental car, it looked expensive, it felt unreasonable," she said. Meanwhile, the weakening dollar is nudging travelers to stay closer to home. In March, a Deloitte survey showed Americans planned to increase summer travel budgets by 13 percent. But by April, they were budgeting roughly the same as last year. "The dollar is just not going as far, and I think people are starting to realize that," said Chirag Panchal, CEO of luxury travel firm Ensuite Collection. His U.S.-based clients are now favoring Canada or the Caribbean over Europe. Rachel Cabeza, a New Jersey-based actor and fitness instructor, sums it up: "We might go international at the end of the summer. If we do, it will be last-minute and spur of the moment based on cheaper flights." For now, her only confirmed trip is a local getaway to Martha's Vineyard.

Canadians facing device searches and detainment is ‘not a pattern,' U.S. ambassador says
The American ambassador to Canada is pushing back on Ottawa's travel advice, saying his country doesn't search phones at the border and arguing some Americans travelling here are having a tough time. 'We welcome Canadians to come in and invest, to spend their hard-earned Canadian dollars at U.S. businesses,' U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra told The Canadian Press in an interview Friday. 'If a Canadian has had a disappointing experience coming into the United States, I'm not denying that it happened, but I'm saying it's an isolated event and it is not a pattern.' In April, Ottawa updated its advice to Canadians travelling to the United States to warn them about the possibility they might be detained if denied entry. 'Expect scrutiny at ports of entry, including of electronic devices,' reads the new guidance. Story continues below advertisement There have been reports of Canadians facing intensified scrutiny at the border, having phones searched and, in some cases, being detained. Hoekstra insisted concerns about device searches are not grounded in reality. 'Coming to the U.S., that's a decision for the Canadians to make. Searching devices and all of that is not a well-founded fear. We don't do that. America is a welcoming place,' he said. He said some Americans have expressed similar concerns about Canada. There are great things to see in America,' Hoekstra said. He also noted the case of CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour, who recently said she prepared to visit the U.S. last month as if she was 'going to North Korea' — with a 'burner phone' that didn't carry any personal information — only to experience a warm welcome. 'It's like, (let's) get past the rhetoric and let's look at the real experiences that people are having here,' Hoekstra said. Airlines have been cutting flights between Canada and the U.S. due to a slump in demand, and Flight Centre Travel Group Canada reported a nearly 40 per cent drop in flights between the two countries year-over-year in February. Roughly the same proportion said they personally feel unwelcome in the U.S. LGBTQ2 groups have opted against attending World Pride events in Washington and United Nations events in New York, citing scrutiny at the border as the Trump administration scales back protections for transgender and non-binary people.

Japan Trials First Full-Flat Sleeper Bus
Japan's first trial run of a highway bus with full-flat seats is now underway, aiming to challenge the common view of night buses as cramped and tiring. The seats were jointly developed by Kochi-based operator Kochi Ekimae Kanko, a local model-making company, and a machinery manufacturer. Made entirely in Kochi, they meet the full-flat seating guidelines introduced by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in November 2024. Since March, Kochi Ekimae Kanko has been operating a weekly round trip between Tokyo and Kochi on a trial basis, receiving positive feedback. With hotel prices climbing due to increasing inbound tourism, the service also aims to appeal to cost-conscious travelers. The full-flat seats are called Sommeil Profond, French for "deep sleep." Two rows of seats, front and back, convert into bunk-style beds, creating a private space similar to a capsule hotel. A large coach was remodeled to accommodate 24 seats across 12 bunk-style units arranged in three rows. The trial service began on March 11, running once a week between Tokyo and Kochi or Tokushima. The longest stretch of the trip takes about 13.5 hours one way. Passengers can stay fully reclined the entire time. Each seat is enclosed by curtains for privacy and comes with amenities like a blanket and pillow, offering a semi-private experience. The regular fare is expected to be around ¥13,000 JPY (about $90 USD), though the trial price has been set between ¥7,000 and ¥7,500. On the morning of May 21, the trial bus arrived at Kochi Station fully booked with passengers traveling for sightseeing or business. Yukari Ikezawa, a 37-year-old office worker from Kochi who took the round trip, said, "The vibrations bothered me a little, but on the way back, I was so tired I slept soundly. I felt much less fatigued compared to a regular bus." A company representative added, "These seats significantly reduce fatigue compared to standard ones. And since passengers can sleep while traveling, it also helps cut down on hotel expenses." Seats arranged to make full-flat "beds." (Courtesy of Kochi Ekimae Kanko) About 30 years ago, Kochi Ekimae Kanko's Chairman Kuninori Umehara saw sleeper buses during a visit to China. The company considered bringing the concept to Japan but had to put the idea on hold due to the lack of a legal framework at the time. Around 10 years ago, the company confirmed that there were no regulations on seat reclining angles. This opened the door to the idea of converting traditional seat designs into fully flat beds, and development began. Creating bus seats involves specialized knowledge and technical skills. To take on the challenge, the company partnered with local model maker Thermal Kobo and industrial machinery manufacturer Kakiuchi. Together, they repeatedly refined prototypes that could fold flat, maximize cabin space, and meet safety standards. They also consulted closely with Japan's transport ministry. It was determined that as long as the seats could return to an upright position, the bus would pass inspection under the Road Transport Vehicle Act. At the time, international safety standards for vehicle seating were based on a 25-degree seatback angle, and there was no established method to assess the safety of fully flat seats. However, as global discussions around safe seating in various postures began to grow, the ministry anticipated rising demand and introduced formal guidelines in November 2024. The guidelines require the following: A fall-prevention plate that can withstand 900 kilograms of force Two-point seatbelts Padding and safety features to prevent falls from the head and sides Clear evacuation routes and secure luggage storage Kochi Ekimae Kanko refined its design to meet these standards and successfully turned the concept into reality. Since the trial began, buses equipped with Sommeil Profond seats have been nearly full. Surveys show that about 80% of users gave the ride high marks, especially for reduced fatigue and improved sleep quality. The most common complaint, however, was the narrow bed size. In bed mode, each seat measures 180 cm (5.9 ft) in length, 48 cm in width, and 51 to 73 cm in height, depending on the seat. Some larger passengers reportedly have to curl up to fit. "There's definitely room for improvement," said a company representative. "But seat size is closely tied to pricing, so we have to be careful when considering any changes to the design." Wider seats would improve comfort but reduce the total number of seats. Since operating costs per bus trip — such as fuel — are mostly fixed, fewer seats would lead to higher fares. For reference, a standard 28-seat, three-row bus charges about ¥10,000 on the Kochi–Tokyo route. The full-flat model accommodates 24 seats, allowing fares in the ¥13,000–¥14,000 range. Passengers have also requested more storage space and power outlets. The company is reviewing these suggestions and plans to expand service this fall with two buses offering four round trips per week. Looking ahead, Kochi Ekimae Kanko aims to market the Sommeil Profond model nationwide. Talks are already underway with bus operators in Tohoku and Kyushu, and interest has been strong. A representative said, "Eventually, we believe half of all overnight highway buses could adopt full-flat seating. By switching between upright and flat modes, these buses could even serve as a new option for inbound tourism. We want to keep improving and expand this model across Japan."
