Rising Chinese automaker BYD continues to build out its fleet of super-sized car carriers as it seeks to expand its international footprint, moving with "unprecedented speed" in a bid to topple Tesla as the global leader in electric vehicles. The massive ships are the largest of their kind in the world, measuring some 220 metres long. The company's expansion of its ocean freight capabilities represents the 'latest battleground' in China's pursuit of EV dominance, according to industry watcher Christopher Chico, who writes about the technology in his newsletter The Battery Chronicle. "China's electric vehicle industry is entering a new phase of global expansion," he wrote on Monday, noting BYD's growing fleet of ro-ro (roll-on/roll-off) ships. "This approach is about more than solving logistics delays. It reflects a broader strategy to control infrastructure, lower costs, and protect global operations from external bottlenecks." As he pointed out, the concept of automaker-owned maritime logistics is not new with Japanese and South Korean car makers relying on their own specialised car carriers to send vehicles around the world. But Chinese automakers "are scaling the model at unprecedented speed", looking to capitalise on growing demand and replace Tesla car sales in overseas markets with a cheaper alternative as Elon Musk's political antics drive many customers away. Among BYD's fleet is a ship that reportedly boasts a 9,200 vehicle capacity which had its maiden voyage in late April to Brazil and another ship of the same size that is yet to set sail. "It's insane, China is on another level entirely," he told Yahoo News. "Anyone in Australia who thinks they're just going to go away sometime soon is in for a shock. "I think eventually it will just lead to cars becoming more affordable," he said of the growing expansion of the Chinese industry. As analysts noted this week, that run rate would put BYD on track to sell a million cars a year to overseas markets. And it's putting incumbent — and typically more expensive — car manufacturers on notice. "I think the people who are really in trouble are Japanese manufacturers… I don't know whether they've got blinders on but they just don't think it's a problem. When you look at how much [Japanese manufacturer] Toyota charges for something like a RAV4 compared to literally any car from China, you're just not going to be able to get away with that for too much longer, I don't think," Maric said. Tesla sales across Europe plunged by half in April even as growth in the electric car market picked up pace, according to newly released data. Sales of Tesla vehicles in 32 European countries tumbled 49 per cent to 7,261 in April from 14,228 in the same month the previous year, according to figures released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, or ACEA. At the same time, sales of battery-electric vehicles by all manufacturers rose about 28 per cent. The figures, which cover the European Union's 27 member countries and five other nations outside the bloc, back up early data from Sweden, the Netherlands and Denmark released earlier this month that had pointed to a sales collapse for Tesla, the hitherto dominant market leader in the EV race. New Jersey is removing Tesla chargers from its turnpike. What about Mass.?
The removal of more than 60 Tesla Superchargers is underway from the super highway connecting northern and southern New Jersey. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) made the decision to instead go with a sole third-party charging provider to serve the state's turnpike and has not allowed Tesla to co-locate, the business wrote on X. '... NJTA requested 64 existing Supercharger stalls on the New Jersey Turnpike to not be renewed and be decommissioned,' the post reads. 'We have been preparing for three years for this potential outcome by building 116 stalls off the New Jersey Turnpike, ensuring no interruption for our customers.' Service areas on the New Jersey Turnpike will begin transitioning fully to Universal Open Access EV chargers on June 6, NJTA wrote on May 30 in a statement. The chargers, provided by Applegren Electric, are compatible with all makes and models of EVs. Tesla called the decision to eliminate the charging stations a setback for EV users on the highway, adding that it offered the NJTA above-market commercial terms, including an offer to build Superchargers at all New Jersey service plazas and with equipment upgrades like screens and NACS with CCS1 'magic docks.' 'Tesla always advocates for more infrastructure and co-location with additional third-party charging providers,' Tesla wrote. 'This drives down costs through optionality and accelerates EV adoption by having sufficient capacity to shoulder peaks.' Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, there are 97 Tesla Supercharger locations, according to Loan Center. While the majority of these locations are contracted with a business, four are located in plazas owned by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), the agency told MassLive. 'MassDOT has contracted with Tesla to host Superchargers at 4 service plazas: Charlton East, Charlton West, Newton and Lexington,' the agency told MassLive. None of these locations will be canceled, MassDOT added. Tesla hopes that NJTA or New Jersey's Gov. Phil Murphy will change their minds regarding the state's cancelation. 'We are willing to invest in New Jersey Turnpike sites if the New Jersey Turnpike or Murphy want to reverse this decision,' the X post reads. Tesla chargers booted off the New Jersey Turnpike — and Musk cries 'corruption'
Sixty-four Tesla (TSLA) Superchargers will be removed from the New Jersey Turnpike, starting on Friday. Upon hearing the news, Elon Musk tweeted, 'Sounds like corruption.' The highway's authority is not renewing Telsa's contract to provide EV chargers, and is instead turning to Applegreen, which currently operates service areas and restaurants on the NJT and Garden State Parkway. In a 2023 amendment to the state's deal with Applegreen, the company agreed to install 240 universal, open-access EV chargers in all 21 service areas on the Turnpike, as opposed to Tesla-only Superchargers in eight locations. Despite Musk crying foul, Tesla said in a social media statement that they saw this coming. 'We have been preparing for three years for this potential outcome by building 116 stalls off the New Jersey Turnpike, ensuring no interruption for our customers.' It went on to say that it offered to build universal Superchargers using NACS and CCS1, with equipment upgrades, at all service plazas in the state, and were still willing to do so if New Jersey Governor should reverse the decision. In 2020, the NJTA approved an agreement with Tesla to incease the number of EV chargers on the highway from 20 to 76, and to build infrastructure so that third-party providers could install at least two dozen more.
