Seven reasons to love Östergötland

Seven reasons to love Östergötland

Local Sweden07-03-2025

Östergötland, or East Sweden, is flanked by the Baltic Sea on one side, and impressive Lake Vättern on the other. It's home to cities, including Linköping and Norrköping, and a number of vibrant towns. The region has a reputation for being a haven of innovation and industry and is well connected, with two airports and short train connection times to Stockholm – just 1.5 hours from Norrköping and about two hours from Linköping.
A population of 472,000 people already call East Sweden home, drawn to the area for its work-life balance, study opportunities, exciting careers and affordable living.
We spoke to two of Östergötland's residents – Anna Österlund, a nature-lover who grew up in the region, and Colombian-born Hela Galvis who has lived and studied in Sweden for five years – and also got some help from East Sweden to round up seven wonders that make Östergötland so special.
1. Cities worth talking about
Norrköping and Linköping are exciting cities with great nightlife, charming shopping quarters, like Knäppingsborg in Norrköping, and restaurants serving up incredible local produce (which can actually be found throughout the entire region!).
'In Norrköping there is this kind of small explosion of culture happening,' says Hela. 'You can randomly run into a concert, or a new design store that has popped up.'
There are also plenty of museums, like Norrköping Art Museum for modernist lovers or The Swedish Air Force Museum in Linköping, a modern technical and cultural history museum with a unique collection of aircraft, from pioneers of the early 20th century to the present day the high-tech modern Gripen fighter, the latter actually developed and produced in Linköping.
The cities host a number of annual cultural events year-round, like the three-day Kulturnatten in Norrköping, the biggest cosplay and gaming festival in the north of Europe, Närcon in Linköping, and light art festivals in both cities in wintertime. And the cultural exports from the region are significant, from Linköping's world-famous metal group Ghost to the legendary Eldkvarn from Norrköping.
'The cities in Östergötland are pretty much like any other capital city where things are available,' says Hela, adding that the difference is the less hectic pace of life.
Anna agrees, 'I may love the countryside, but I don't think I'll ever want to live far away from a city … I want to always have the possibility to go to a nice restaurant or a decent theatre show and I can get everything that I want from Östergötland.'
2. Small town appeal
It's not only the bigger cities of Östergötland that are wonders of the region; its towns are lively hubs too.
For example, culture lovers will enjoy Vadstena, a historical town with an interesting calendar that includes annual summer operas and Shakespearean dramas.
While charming Söderköping is the launching point to exploring the St. Anna archipelago and has a postcard-worthy medieval town centre, ice cream shops dotted along the Göta Kanal and a host of family-friendly events and markets throughout the year.

3. Cool industrial landscapes
Östergötland has creativity and industrial innovation built into its DNA it seems. Nicknamed Sweden's Manchester for its industrial heritage and vibe, Norrköping is home to former textile warehouses and paper mills from the Industrial Revolution era, which are well-preserved and located on the waterfront in the city centre.
The historic buildings and waterways, with their dams and waterfalls, are accessed via bridges and paths and make for a unique landscape.
Both Hela and Anna highlight Industrilandskapet (The Industrial Landscape) of Norrköping and its evolution today.
'Now these closed textile factories are pulsating restaurants, museums, homes, apartments, co-working office spaces, walking routes – the area's really come to life … it's absolutely one of the coolest things to see here,' says Anna.
'There are beautiful canals to walk around in both Norrköping and Linköping,' says Hela.
In the birthplace of the Göta Kanal, Motala, another transformation of a former industrial area is underway.
Known as the 'cradle of industry in Sweden', the area of the old Motala Verkstad is about to change, starting with the exciting, newly renovated Lokverkstan, an event area bringing unique life, action and concerts to its historic waterfront.
4. An impressive man-made feat: Göta Kanal
Speaking of Göta Kanal, this local wonder is an engineering marvel. Constructed in the early 19th century, the canal and its 58 locks runs for an incredible 190 kilometres and links to waterways that reach from Söderköping in Östergötland to Gothenburg on Sweden's west coast.
From ice skating in the winter to swimming in the summer, and from cycling beside it to boating along it, there are a number of ways and places to enjoy the canal.
One of Anna's favourite weekend activities, after a fika with friends and her children, is a walk by the canal. 'You can't help but to be amazed by the engineering, and that's from 200 years ago when they built it, and it's still up and running,' she says.

5. A place of innovation
The Östergötland region breeds creativity, innovation and growth. It's home to a broad array of innovation hotspots, including its two impressive science parks: Linköping Science Park and Norrköping Science Park. Here, research, education and entrepreneurship collide, giving birth to exciting collaborations and innovation.
Advanced materials like solar cells on a roll, energy-storing paper and artificial skin are being developed in this high-tech region, where fascinating research and development is taking place and a business cluster for new materials is forming. No wonder Linköping was named European Rising Innovative City in 2023.
It's a place lauded for its innovative healthcare, too, thanks to the high-quality, advanced medical care throughout the region, and the open research climate of the nationally and internationally recognised University Hospital in Linköping.
As with much of Sweden, there is also a focus on the environment. The breadth of sectors in Östergötland – from companies to universities to public institutions – are working toward smart solutions, the circular economy and green resource efficiency.
'Here people work in this high-tech environment where there is in-depth knowledge and thinking but it is also very calm and there is respect for nature and people really don't want to rush,' says Hela, who praises the calmer and more respectful work-life balance she has felt since moving to Norrköping. 'If you're into that, this is your place to be!'
6. A growth region with career opportunities
East Sweden can be described as a hub of ICT, tech and innovation with international cutting-edge expertise. Its strength in these fields comes from the mix of high-end research, industrial companies and exciting smaller start-ups.
There are an impressive 45,000 businesses in the region including several big international companies that operate from here, like Toyota Material Handling, Siemens Energy, Ericsson, Saab and Väderstad. And there are more than 170,000 jobs in a range of different industries waiting to be snapped up.
Logistics and transport is a major employer – the region has a strong infrastructure and a good logistical location. The forward-thinking nature of the region means there is an emphasis on the logistics of the future, centring on efficiency and sustainability.
For students, Linköping University is one of the largest in Sweden, with almost 42,000 students and an array of course opportunities with its 135 degree programmes.
And work opportunities don't only centre around Östergötland's main cities, Linköping and Norrköping. Other areas in the region are also home to companies and have a history of industry still thriving today, for example, steel in Boxhom, aluminium in Finspång, and in Mjölby, the headquarters of Toyota Material Handling.

7. The great outdoors
We can't talk about Östergötland without mentioning its natural attractions. The Östgötaskärgården, Archipelago of Östergötland, lies off the east coast in the Baltic Sea.
Made up of St. Anna, Arkösund, and the Gryt and Tjust archipelagos, it features seaside villages, lighthouses, harbours, beaches, stunning rocky outcrops and pockets of green isles – perfect for weekend boating, fishing, camping and kayaking adventures.
On the other side of Östergötland is the beautiful – and huge – Lake Vättern, its eastern shores forming Östergötland's border. On the waterfront here at medieval, cobblestoned Vadstena is where St Birgitta of Sweden established her convent and order.
St Birgitta's Trail is a pilgrimage route that finishes in Vadstena and traverses breathtaking Östergötland scenery, winding through verdant meadows and mystical forest for 145 kilometres to Söderköping.
The equally fantastic Östgötaleden takes hikers on 1500 kilometres of trails through all 13 of the region's municipalities. So no matter where you are in the region, you can easily access and walk a marked nature trail.
It's this closeness to nature that both Anna and Hela enjoy about living in the region. Marked, family-friendly walking trails, exploring lush countryside and visiting pretty lakeside spots for outdoor fika are some of the activities that fill their weekends.
'It's a place for soft adventure,' says Anna. 'There are accessible hiking trails throughout the region. It makes it really easy for us as a family, even with strollers, to get out into the woods. And even by the ocean we have really nice hiking.'

Jim Chanos Sees Big Short in Saylor's Strategy, But Others Aren't So Sure

(Bloomberg) -- Buy Bitcoin, short Michael Saylor's Strategy. That's the latest call from legendary short-seller Jim Chanos, who sees the arbitrage play as a no-brainer. Others aren't so sure. ICE Moves to DNA-Test Families Targeted for Deportation with New Contract Next Stop: Rancho Cucamonga! The Global Struggle to Build Safer Cars US Housing Agency Vulnerable to Fraud After DOGE Cuts, Documents Warn NYC Residents Want Safer Streets, Cheaper Housing, Survey Says The trade has long been on the radar of Wall Street hedge funds, drawn to the premium Strategy's shares enjoy relative to the value of the company's Bitcoin holdings — a gap that topped 200% last year. The discrepancy stems from Saylor's self-styled Bitcoin treasury strategy, through which he has tapped capital markets to buy more and more of the world's biggest cryptocurrency, in turn attracting billions of dollars from retail investors. In the eyes of many arbitrage specialists, the yawning spread is unsustainable — in fact, it's already begun to narrow, but they see further opportunity to profit. 'I haven't seen an arbitrage like this in this size in years, years and years,' Chanos said during a recent interview on the Risk and Return podcast, referencing the trade he disclosed on CNBC in early May. It's one of a series of sophisticated trading strategies around the complex capital structure of Saylor's firm, formerly known as MicroStrategy, and the growing ecosystem of crypto investment vehicles. Some market players see parallels to the once-popular 'widow-maker' pair trade involving Bitcoin and the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, but with fewer constraints. There are still risks involved, though. Chanos, known for his prescient bet against Enron Corp. 20 years ago, emphasized that his current favored trade isn't a wager against Bitcoin or Strategy, but rather a mirror of Saylor's own playbook: selling equity and raising capital to buy more digital assets. The core opportunity, he said, lies in the divergence between Strategy's market price and the company's Bitcoin-adjusted book value. 'The fact of the matter is, this is a Bitcoin holding company,' Chanos said on the podcast explaining the premium dislocation. Buying Strategy shares at their current price of around $400, he said, is effectively equivalent to buying Bitcoin at about two times its value — 'paying around $220,000 for Bitcoin that trades at $110,000. But the company is doing everything it can to close that spread, which is great — there's a catalyst.' A growing number of copycats have also started pursuing similar crypto-treasury strategies, further shifting supply-demand dynamics, Chanos added on the podcast. The investor didn't respond to a request for comment, nor did representatives for Strategy. On a basic level, the premium as measured by Strategy's market capitalization relative to its Bitcoin holding value stands at 70%, according to Bloomberg calculations. Taken a step further — adding in other dilutive securities the company has employed in its massive capital raising in the last year and removing the value of Strategy's legacy software business — and investors are paying a premium for the stock that's nearly double the value of the firm's Bitcoin holdings. If Bitcoin rises but Strategy's premium compresses — or if share dilution outpaces gains— Chanos' trade would turn a profit. Yet like any arbitrage, the spread may widen before it narrows, as seen in the GBTC trade around 2021. Premium Warranted? Some analysts and retail believers argue that a substantial premium in Saylor's firm is warranted, placing it in a unique category. First of all, Strategy offers investors exposure to a zero-fee Bitcoin vehicle, offering an edge over comparable exchange-traded funds. What's more, the company demonstrated an ability to use leverage to grow Bitcoin per share over time, an added value for investors buying the stock instead of the ETFs or underlying crypto, according to TD Cowen analyst Lance Vitanza, who believes Strategy's Bitcoin per share will increase by 26% this year. 'I expect MSTR will trade around its recent historical premium, either side of 100%, for the foreseeable future,' he said, referring to Strategy's ticker. Timing — when to enter and exit the wager— remains a key variable around returns, given the spread's ongoing volatility. In March 2024, Kerrisdale Capital Management promoted a similar pair trade in a letter titled 'Know When to HODL, Know When to FODL,' in a nod to crypto lingo. The firm still stands by its thesis, but 'I don't have the trade on now,' said founder Sahm Adrangi. 'When we put out the report, the premium was much higher and it made sense at that point. Is it going to zero? I don't really know,' he said, declining to specify when the firm closed the position. To Chanos and other fans of the trade, Strategy's ample market capitalization — now over $100 billion — and deep float make it relatively easy to maintain the short leg. For hedge funds, new borrows are being priced at a fee of 0.3 percentage point, according to data from S3 Partners. This helps to keep the cost of carry manageable while waiting for the spread to narrow. The inexpensive terms are likely to persist, given the stock's roughly 250 million free floating shares, and that only 11% is currently sold short, said Sam Pierson, director of research at the firm. But that doesn't eliminate the risk that the borrowing dynamics could change — potentially becoming more expensive and less stable, especially for individual investors, said Victor Haghani, chief investment officer of Elm Wealth and founding partner of Long Term Capital Management. There's a lot of demand for borrowing shares related to convertible arbitrage wagers and leveraged short ETFs, he added. Another source of uncertainty is the potential for an unexpected corporate event, such as a merger that might shift the company's fundamental business, complicating premium estimates and muddying the existing trade. 'Say if all of a sudden Strategy is part of something that is twice as big — then when you try to look at the valuation relative to the Bitcoin it holds, you can't really say that much anymore because now there's a business with revenues,' Haghani said. Still, he is confident of the spread's long-term convergence. 'My expectation is that in four or five years at the longest, the premium will be zero or even negative,'he said. 'I think this is a good trade, a good one possibly for hedge funds, but it's not one I'd want to put on in my personal account for the risks involved and my disadvantaged position relative to hedge funds in running the trade.' --With assistance from Tom Contiliano. Arsenal need goals and see Igor Paixão as an affordable alternative

Arsenal need goals and see Igor Paixão as an affordable alternative Arsenal have added Igor Paixão to their list of potential transfer targets for this summer, The Times reports. The Feyenoord winger is said to be an alternative to the 'expensive' Nico Williams and Leroy Sané. According to the English paper, Mikel Arteta has prioritised strengthening his attack after Arsenal were forced to settle for a third consecutive second-place finish in the Premier League. The team scored 69 goals, 22 fewer than the previous season. Advertisement Paixão joins Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers on the Gunners' wishlist. Rogers seems to have a slight advantage over Paixão. 'Arteta likes versatile players and prefers to sign players with Premier League experience. The 24-year-old Paixão would be a cheaper option than Rogers.' Paixão has been under contract with Feyenoord since the summer of 2022. In Rotterdam-Zuid, the Brazilian has made 129 appearances so far, in which he has scored 39 goals and provided 29 assists. With this, Paixão has caught the attention of clubs from Europe. Olympique Marseille are said to have offered around 20 million euros, although Feyenoord were quick to turn that down.
