The north west hotels near Greater Manchester named the UK's best places to stay

Yahoo10-03-2025

A Lakeside spa hideaway, a Michelin-starred country retreat and a city-centre hotel beloved by celebrities are among the north-west properties named by The Times in its annual list of the best places to stay in the UK.
Cumbria's The Gilpin Hotel & Lake House, Moor Hall in Lancashire and Manchester's own The Stock Exchange Hotel have all been included in the round up which is a 'celebration of excellence from stalwarts that have upped their game to newbies making waves'.
The list is compiled by The Times' team of experienced reviewers, who look at 'excellence in design, facilities and value for money' regardless of room rate.

This year the publication also paid particular attention to dining and service, with many foodie-focused venues included on the list.
Reviewers praised restaurant kitchens that have 'risen to the challenge of food-price hikes to produce ever more creative and delicious dishes', adding that this year's stays produced 'more memorable meals than ever before'.
The list features rural retreats alongside metropolitan stays. Only one hotel in Manchester made the cut, The Stock Exchange, co-owned by former footballers Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs.
Offering a 'dash of old-school opulence' to the city, the luxurious grade-II listed hotel counts Sir Paul McCartney and Madonna among its visitors, while Chanel booked out the entire place in 2023 for guests of its Metiers D'Art fashion show, when the likes of Kristen Stewart and Hugh Grant spend the night in its stunning rooms.
Elsewhere in the north west, School Lane Hotel in the heart of Liverpool's city centre made the list, a converted Victorian building right by the Liverpool One entertainment complex, which offers guests an "edited version of luxury'.
But it was country hotels which dominated the north west entries on the list. No fewer than five properties in Cumbria feature in the top 100, including the Michelin-starred The Cottage In The Wood in Keswick and Langdale Chase, which boasts 'sweeping views of Lake Windermere.'
Over in Lancashire, two hotels made the list: Moor Hall in Augton and Northcote in the Ribble Valley, both awarded Michelin stars. The former is very much a stay for foodies, with chef-patron Mark Birchall 'serving up a Vegas-worthy show' while Northcote was praised for its 'signature mix of exquisite Michelin-starred fine dining and warmly welcoming service.'
Outside the north west, several hotels within easy reach also received a mention, including Derbyshire's Bike & Boot in the Hope Valley, and Penmaenuchaf in Gwynedd, North Wales.

Pastry Chef Talula Dempsey Launches a Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix

Pastry Chef Talula Dempsey Launches a Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix originally appeared on L.A. Mag. Talula Dempsey spent years perfecting her signature chocolate chip cookies, known among friends for the chewy centers and crispy edges. She's had some practice where sweets are concerned: the baking fan earned multiple pastry certifications at Le Cordon Bleu Paris and London, and honed her craft as part of the pastry team at Michelin-starred Gucci Osteria in Beverly after months of development, her company, Talula's Kitchen, has launched a cookie mix that allows others to re-create them at home. The cookies feature the exact ingredients Dempsey uses, including chocolate with a hint of vanilla, in sustainably sourced packaging. Here, she discusses how to make the perfect cookie at home and what she'll be whipping up on Father's Day for her dad, actor Patrick Dempsey. When did you first fall in love with baking? It's always been something I've loved to do. My uncle would make spaghetti and meatballs, and I'd pretend I was the one who made it, setting up a fake restaurant in their house. As I got older, I was always in the kitchen making cupcakes or cake pops with friends. Where do you shop for ingredients? I do a lot of my shopping for ingredients that are fresher at the farmer's market. I love the Brentwood farmers market, as well as the Santa Monica one. I like Erewhon for certain ingredients when I'm looking for something that I know is going to be organic and have different options for different sweeteners. I really like to stay local, just making sure that all the food I get I can guarantee was processed in a sustainable way. Why did you decide to launch the cookie mix? When I was in high school and in college, I would always make chocolate chip cookies for my friends. If we had a beach picnic, I would be the one bringing the cookies. And as much as I love shipping cookies, it's not the same as having a fresh cookie to eat. It's not the quality dessert you would want. [It's not] as if it just came straight out of your oven. But then I would send my friends my recipe, and I realized that the primary reason they're not getting the same results is because the ingredients are different. So I wanted to make a mix with the exact same ingredients I used, same semisweet chocolate and type of sugar. I was like, 'If I start making a mix, they can re-create this and they're not going to have a difficult time and have different flavors.' What makes your cookie mix special? I think it's the ratio of sugar that I put into it. I use both brown and white sugar in my mixture. I think that the best chocolate chip cookie is one that has a chewy center and a crispy exterior, so finding the perfect combination between those two sugars really helped me create a cookie that consistently has that chewy interior, crunchy exterior. How are you planning on celebrating Father's Day this year? My dad's a big breakfast person, so we'll usually do a brunch. We like to go to the farmers market, then cook a spread with all his favorite things — cheesecake, cookies, definitely something sweet. This story was originally reported by L.A. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A video of a homeowner making a "jackpot" discovery beneath a carpet during renovation works has gone viral on TikTok. The clip was shared by Seren and Rhys (@our_edwardian_reno) and has garnered 513,000 views since it was posted on June 9. The short clip shows a woman peeling a carpet off the floor to reveal what appears to be Victorian tiles underneath it, according to a hashtag shared in the caption. Each tile features a blue star shape against a white backdrop, overlaid with a patterned centerpiece. "Oh my god," the caption simply says. According to another video, the tiles were found on the day the poster was adding a new doorway to their hallway. The discovery in the viral post comes amid a broader trend of Americans investing in home renovations. According to a recent survey by Houzz, a home design website, the median renovation spending in the U.S. surged by 60 percent between 2020 and 2023, rising from $15,000 to $24,000. Seven out of 10 renovating homeowners were reported to have invested in interior room remodeling in 2023, according to the report. The viral video also comes as the global flooring market was estimated to be valued at $360.7 billion in 2024 and projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 6.8 percent from 2025 to 2030, according to a report by Grandview Research, a market research firm headquartered in San Francisco. "Increasing demand for aesthetic, superior, and durable floor covering solutions and changing consumer trends in floor design have aided the growth of the flooring industry over the past few years," the report said. 'Dream Find' Viewers on TikTok were amazed by the incredible surprise finding beneath the carpet in the viral video. Claud said: "Holy shiz. dream find right there!" and MGW wrote: "Absolute perfection." Why are there no Michelin-starred restaurants in New Mexico?

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – It's one of the top honors a restaurant can receive: being recognized by the Michelin Guide for its cuisine. Over 1,500 U.S. eateries are published in the guide, and 260 have earned a coveted Michelin star. But why are none of those establishments in New Mexico? It turns out the Land of Enchantment joins a long list of states in the country that are not considered by Michelin Guides, and it's not because they lack top restaurants or food. As of 2025, Michelin inspectors only cover cities in seven states: New York, Chicago, California, Florida, Colorado, Texas, and Atlanta, and D.C. Los Ranchos De Albuquerque restaurant named 2025 James Beard award finalist That list will be expanding soon, as the Michelin Guide announced in April that it would include states in the South, including Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Michelin is always looking to expand, but only after certain standards or criteria are achieved. 'To publish the Michelin Guide [in a specific area], we need first and foremost culinary potential,' Gwendal Poullennec, the international director of the Michelin Guide, told Bon Appetit in 2024. 'Today, I have inspectors scouting about 20 destinations where we do not yet have a restaurant selection, but that we are considering for future years. It's always a several-year process because we must see the openings and the consistency.' But it's more than just consistency or 'culinary potential' that brings a Michelin Guide to town. In recent years, Michelin has partnered with local and state tourism boards to help fund the creation of a new guide for that area — but only after the inspectors have deemed the local food scene to be worthy. In 2023, The New York Times reported that California's tourism board had paid Michelin $600,000 in 2019 to cover the cost of expanding its culinary inspections beyond the Bay Area and Napa Valley. Tourism groups in Florida, Atlanta, Colorado and Texas all reportedly agreed to similar financial partnerships. When asked about these newer financial partnerships, Poullennec, speaking with Bon Appetit in 2024, suggested that the Michelin's arrangements with these tourism boards (or, as he called them, 'destination marketing organizations' or DMOs) help to defray the editorial expenses involved with producing the guides. 'The involvement of DMOs in establishing new Guides does not have any influence on the Inspectors' judgments regarding the destination assessment, the restaurants in the selection, or award distinctions,' the inspector told Nexstar. 'DMO teams have no access to the Inspectors' work or the final selection until the list of selected restaurants is revealed by the MICHELIN Guide.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
