UK net migration in 2024 fell by half to 431,000: Official figures

Net migration to the UK halved in 2024 to 431,000 people, the latest official figures showed Thursday, driven by tougher work and study visa restrictions.

(ONS) estimated the figure for the year at 431,000, down from 860,000 in the year to December 2023, the biggest fall in net migration since the Covid pandemic.
"Long-term net migration is down by almost 50 per cent," the ONS said in its latest report adding: "we are seeing reductions in people arriving on work- and study-related visas".
It had also recorded "an increase in emigration over the 12 months to December 2024" especially by those on work and study visas.
The previous Conservative government had toughed conditions for those applying for such visas, setting higher caps on salaries and refusing people to bring their families with them.
But immigration has become a hot-button issue in UK politics, and Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer unveiled tough new immigration policies earlier this month vowing to "finally take back control" of Britain's borders.
The measures included cutting overseas care workers, doubling the length of time before migrants can qualify for settlement and new powers to deport foreign criminals.
Starmer, a former human rights lawyer who voted for the UK to remain part of the EU, is under renewed pressure to tackle immigration following the anti-immigration Reform party's gains in recent local elections.

AHMEDABAD: Former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani considered '1206' his lucky number and ensured it featured on all vehicles he owned over the years. The number has now become synonymous with one of the worst aviation tragedies in India's history, in which he lost his life along with 264 others on Thursday. Gujarat state BJP chief and Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Paatil on Thursday confirmed Rupani's death in the plane crash. The 68-year-old leader was known for his composed demeanour and firm administrative style. He served as Gujarat's chief minister from August 2016 to September 2021 and steered the state through a critical post-COVID-19 recovery phase. He started off as a student leader, leading several agitations, and was an activist of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in his college days. In 1975, Rupani was imprisoned for a year in the Bhavnagar jail while protesting against the Emergency. He entered public service in 1987 when he was elected as a corporator in the Rajkot Municipal Corporation and later became the mayor. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha between 2006 and 2012. His tenure as the chief minister saw the launch of the state Industrial Policy 2020 and initiatives for tribal upliftment. Rupani stepped down from the post in September 2021, making way for Bhupendra Patel ahead of state elections. He was later appointed as BJP in-charge of Punjab.

UK dispatches team to help India investigate Ahmedabad Air India crash
British Prime Minister Kier Starmer has announced that an investigation team from the United Kingdom has been dispatched to India as part of the ongoing investigation into the crash of Air India's London-bound flight AI 171 in statement came soon after the British agency, Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), which investigates civil aircraft accidents and serious incidents, said it will be deploying a multidisciplinary investigation team to India to support the India-led investigation into the flight crashed with 242 people on board within minutes of taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on Thursday evening.
