Three Rescued After Boat Capsizes Off Coast Of Raglan
At 9:02am today, Coastguard's Operations Centre was contacted by Police after a report of three people in trouble near Spot X, a well-known but remote surf break off the coast of Whale Bay, Raglan.
Coastguard Raglan's rescue vessel Gallaher Rescue, along with jetskis Rylock Waikato Rescue One and Two, responded to the incident. Raglan Surf Life Saving Club also joined the rescue effort and worked closely with Coastguard's jetski crews.
At 9:28am, the two Coastguard volunteers aboard Rylock One located the three fishermen on the rocks. Seeing that they were injured, one of the volunteers entered the water with a medical first aid kit and swam to the scene, providing initial treatment and thermal blankets. A member of Raglan Surf also swam in to assist.
According to a Coastguard Raglan spokesperson, the fishermen shared that their 5–6 metre boat had been hit by a large set of waves and capsized. They managed to climb onto the upturned hull but couldn't get mobile reception to call for help and couldn't locate their Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB). As the swell pushed the boat toward jagged rocks, they were forced to abandon the vessel, sustaining injuries as they were battered by waves against the rocks before being able to clamber above the high tide line.
'They were cold, shaken, and cut up from the rocks — but incredibly relieved to see help arrive. As they were being checked over, they shared that their lifejackets had kept them afloat and helped prevent more serious injuries. They were in no doubt — those lifejackets saved their lives. Without them, the outcome could have been very different.'
Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter was requested to extract the injured fishermen. At 10:17am, the first patient was airlifted to shore at Manu Bay and handed over to Surf personnel, with the helicopter returning to collect the remaining two.
Conditions at the time included strong easterly winds and a 3-4 foot swell.
This rescue is a timely reminder of the importance of always wearing a lifejacket and highlights just how vital it is to carry a personal locator beacon (PLB) on your person — not just have an EPRIB onboard.

James Wood, 34, and Tanika Bromley, 33, face one count each of murder and two counts each of interfering with a corpse, after their arrest on Thursday night. Bishop, 17, from Gin Gin, north of Brisbane, has been missing since 15 May. "Our investigation will detail the facts that we believe Pheobe was murdered and then her body was moved," Detective Inspector Craig Mansfield said. "We will allege that Pheobe was moved more than once." Police will allege Bishop was in a car with her housemates on the way to Bundaberg Airport, but the teenager never entered the terminal. He said they expected to find her body in the greater Gin Gin area. "We are suspecting we may locate Pheobe, but it is a broad, unforgiving area that we're trying to narrow down." Detective Inspector Mansfield confirmed dead dogs had been found at the Gin Gin home where the three lived, and more charges were expected against Wood and Bromley. "Our primary focus was clearly Pheobe in this homicide investigation, so all of those other charges will likely follow." Asked why police released Wood from custody earlier this week, Detective Inspector Mansfield said investigations "ebb and flow". "We were satisfied, after the review of the culmination of the information and evidence that we collected over that three-week period, that we were in a position to make that arrest yesterday evening," he said. Police say they tracked two cars taken from the city suburbs of Bishopdale and St Albans to Pegasus. Officers used road spikes to stop them, but before they could be apprehended Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel said they tried to steal a third vehicle, "but all they've done is break a window and make a mess of the ignition - and sadly, that's a headache for yet another car owner". The 13 year-old was referred to Youth Services. The others were aged up to 23, and will appear at Christchurch's district and youth courts on charges including vehicle theft, failing to stop and possessing an air rifle. "We know car theft is an ongoing problem and urge vehicle owners to purchase immobilisers or steering wheel locks if they have to park on the street," McDaniel said. "Even with attempted car theft, it's more than an inconvenience, because offenders can cause a lot of damage to the ignition when they're attempting to start the car. This offending has a real impact on real people's lives, and we need the community's help to prevent it." Child charged with arson over Auckland McDonald's fire

Police have been investigating the suspicious fire which occurred at the Pakuranga Road branch on 5 May. On Friday, Detective Senior Sergeant Dean Batey said a 12-year-old young person has been arrested and charged with arson.
