I booked a £609 package to Spain through easyJet Holidays. Shortly afterwards, easyJet notified me that there were building works at the hotel. I was given the option of going ahead with the trip, or changing the holiday and paying any difference in price. Equivalent packages cost more, and since I've been under a lot of stress the last thing I wanted was a week on a building site, so I asked for a refund, but easyJet refused.

The easyJet alert is certainly discouraging given the hotel advertised was in a 'quiet' location. It warned that the noise of hammering was likely for 11 hours a day while the front of the hotel was repaired. However, because its facilities were still open, you did not qualify for a refund.
Surprisingly, this seems to be backed up by the rules. The Package Travel Regulations stipulate a refund is due if the main characteristic of a holiday is altered, but it's silent on noisy building works. Abta's code of conduct says that if building work does not affect hotel facilities no refund is due. Katherine Allen at law firm Hugh James says you might have a case if the holiday was sold on the basis of tranquillity, works were extensive and another hotel of the same quality could not be found.
EasyJet holidays says: 'The building work was graded as 'moderate', meaning having an insignificant impact. New EU regulations could water down British holidaymakers' rights to compensation in the event of a flight delay, while forcing us to take smaller bags into the cabin. On Thursday June 5, EU Transport Ministers met to discuss changes to air passenger laws. They proposed to extend the minimum delay after which flyers may be entitled to compensation from three hours to four, while reducing the maximum amount that passengers can receive. Ministers also suggested a new standardised bag allowance for free underseat luggage which is smaller than those currently imposed by easyJet and Wizz. Despite Brexit, these rule changes could have implications for British holidaymakers travelling to the Continent. Let's take a look at the new regulations on the table, and the chances that they will affect your holidays. As it stands, holidaymakers delayed by more than three hours are eligible for compensation, on top of their refund, so long as the airline is at fault for the delay. This is thanks to a regulation called EU261, passed in 2004, which the UK decided to adopt into law after leaving the European Union. Compensation rates start from €250/£220, rising to €600/£520 depending on the length of the flight. However, this threshold could soon be raised to four hours. Under the latest proposals, the lower end of the compensation bracket will go up to €300 and the higher end will come down to €500. Ministers are also expected to update the list of 'extraordinary circumstances', which allow airlines to avoid paying compensation, as part of revisions to 31 different air passenger rights. British passengers travelling with any airline from an EU country back to the UK will be affected by the proposed rule change. So if you are flying with British Airways from Paris to Heathrow, you will need to wait four hours, not three, to be eligible for compensation. If the proposed change passes through EU Parliament, passengers flying from Britain to the Continent would still qualify for compensation when their flight delay hits the three-hour mark. However, it is ultimately on the UK Government to decide whether or not to adopt the amendments for outbound flights, or to stick with the original rules. Consumer groups are lobbying the Government to take no action, thereby retaining the more generous compensation rules, but British airlines will likely argue that stepping out of line with the EU will put them at a disadvantage against international rivals. Ryanair has previously estimated that EU261 costs each passenger £7 per flight, and some airlines groups have lobbied for an even longer compensation threshold of five hours, to dissuade cancellations and allow airlines a chance to reroute flights to fulfil scheduled routes. In early June, EU transport ministers proposed standardising the size of free underseat baggage across all EU airlines. This could become EU law if accepted by the European Parliament. The ministers proposed that this new size would be 40 x 30 x 15cm, including wheels and handles. Airlines currently have varying size allowances for the free underseat bag, which are: easyJet: 45 x 36 x 20cm Ryanair: 40 x 20 x 25cm Wizz: 40 x 30 x 20cm British Airways: 56 x 45 x 25cm plus handbag/laptop bag Jet2: 56 x 45 x 25cm plus handbag/laptop bag Notably, the suggested 15cm dimension would represent a reduction in depth by 20 to 25 per cent on what are already fairly stringent allowances. There have been no suggestions of standardising the size of overhead locker bag allowance. However, over the last year a number of Spanish courts have ordered low-cost airlines to reimburse passengers for hand luggage charges. Lawyers from Blake Morgan told The Telegraph: 'This will have consequences for all airlines flying to and from Spain and possibly other EU destinations as well.' The new bag size rules would apply to all airlines with bases in the EU (including Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz) and would cover all routes including to non-EU countries like the UK. Some consumer groups have voiced their support for the move. Jane Hawkes, a consumer travel expert, says that hand luggage sizes should be universal. 'I don't really see why it can't be, and why they can't come to a voluntary agreement as to what those requirements should be for your baggage,' she told the BBC. Thousands of UK holidaymakers are ditching traditional European hotspots in favour of north Africa, travel companies have reported. Experts say many people are being drawn to the region by its wide availability of high-quality hotels costing considerably less than similar properties in locations such as Spain, France and Italy. North African countries Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia are all experiencing a boost in visitors from the UK. Figures from aviation analysts Cirium show 19,847 flights are projected to serve routes from UK airports to those nations this year, more than twice as many as the 8,653 that did so in 2019. By comparison, the number of flights to Spain and Portugal is forecast to increase by 10% and 9% respectively over the same period. This suggests many holidaymakers who want better quality accommodation without paying more are prepared to take a longer flight, despite airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair having seats that do not recline and no onboard entertainment. Flights from Gatwick airport, West Sussex to Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh take about five hours and 20 minutes. That means spending an extra hour and 45 minutes on a plane compared with trips to the traditional southern Spanish hotspot of Alicante. EasyJet launched flights between Gatwick and Cape Verde, off the coast of west Africa, in March, which is its longest route serving England. The flights take six hours and 10 minutes to cover the distance of 2,332 nautical miles. Travel company Tui said bookings from flight-only and package holiday customers for summer breaks in Egypt are 30% higher compared with a year ago. It also reported 'double-digit growth' for Tunisia and strong demand for Morocco. Tui's UK commercial director Chris Logan said these three destinations offer 'fantastic value for money', meaning traditional European destinations find it 'hard to compete'. He told the PA news agency: 'There's good quality accommodation and great weather beyond the traditional summer season. 'Even in the winter months temperatures are mild, making them a perfect choice for year-round travel.' Tui has increased its flights from the UK to north Africa this summer to meet growing demand, with new routes from Stansted to Enfidha in Tunisia and from Newcastle to Agadir, Morocco. Online accommodation marketplace said it recorded a 68% increase in the number of searches for summer breaks in Tunisia during the first five months of this year, compared with the same period in 2024. Egypt and Morocco saw rises of 64% and 39% respectively. Nicki Tempest-Mitchell, managing director at travel agency Barrhead Travel, said Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia offer 'incredible value for money' which is 'proving increasingly attractive for holidaymakers this year'. She added: 'The investment in high-quality hotels and experiences across these regions is turning the heads of customers who may previously have favoured mainland Europe. 'Although favourites such as Spain and Turkey are still our top-selling destinations, it's safe to say north Africa is a region to watch over the next few years.' Julia Lo Bue-Said, chief executive of Advantage Travel Partnership, a network of independent travel agents, said there is a 'clear trend toward value-conscious holiday planning'. She went on: 'Ongoing cost of living pressures and squeezed disposable incomes have meant that while people remain committed to taking holidays, they're increasingly focused on maximising value for money. 'This shift has driven growing popularity for destinations like Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia, which offer more competitive pricing and high-quality accommodation options compared to the more traditional western Mediterranean resorts.' EasyJet apologises as mum claims family could have died in holiday fire

A mum claims her family could have died when she awoke to find their four-star hotel in flames on their EasyJet holiday - as there was 'no staff help or fire alarm'. Bethany Wallace jetted off to Marmaris in Turkey for a two-week EasyJet holiday alongside her husband and three children on April 1st. But on the third night of their holiday at the luxury resort, Bethany claims she awoke at 5am to the smell of smoke. Horrified, the 36-year-old woke her husband and kids as smoke filled the room before running across the hall to alert her eldest son too. (Image: Kennedy News/@thewallacekitchen) The mum-of-three said she heard no fire alarm and didn't see any staff directing guests as they looked for an exit, with some exits being too full of smoke to use. Bethany, who is a baker and business owner, claims she will never forget her 'scared' kids' faces as the family managed to escape through one of the staircases. After making it out, Bethany said there were no directions to a gathering point and guests were screaming for help from balconies - with some even climbing to other balconies to escape. While waiting outside, Bethany said the smoke, which smelt like burnt plastic, was so bad it started to make the family choke. Footage shows them returning the next day to discover their room blackened from the smoke damage, with most of their belongings ruined. After seeing the hotel's doctor, the family were reportedly given medication for the remainder of the holiday, with Bethany's two children suffering from eye infections and her husband from lung issues from smoke inhalation. EasyJet apologised to the family for how 'distressing' it must have been and said pending the outcome of a formal investigation by the relevant authorities, they will not be offering this property to their holidaymakers. Bethany, from Grays, Essex, said: "I woke up to the smell of smoke and when I opened my eyes the room was full of smoke, it was coming through the grids in the room and under the door. "There was no fire alarm, no noise, it was all really quiet, nothing to alarm anyone. I woke my husband up and said we need to get out now. "I grabbed my six-year-old who was sleeping next to us, we went to my eldest son's room which was next door to ours. "It's difficult to get your bearings when it's so full of smoke. We came across the first staircase we'd normally use and that was just too full of smoke, you couldn't see the bottom of it. "At this point we were banging on doors, there were other people coming out, there was no staff at all, it was chaos. We found a staircase we could go down and got out of the building. "It was really scary. The look on my kids' faces when we were trying to escape the building will never leave my memory. We could have died. (Image: Kennedy News/@thewallacekitchen) "There were no members of staff showing us the gathering place, no procedure at any point [that we saw]. My husband and my eldest son only had shorts on, none of us had any shoes on, there was no one handing out blankets, there was nothing. "It was freezing. We were just left, we waited outside and we could see the situation was getting worse, there were people on the balconies screaming for help. "The smoke had a strange smell, it was a really chemical smell like burning plastic and we were all choking on it. "We took the boys and walked half a mile down the road where we felt the air was clearer and stayed there for another hour. "There were people jumping between balconies because the smoke was so bad in their rooms." The mum said she tried to contact EasyJet to find information about what to do but did not manage to get through to them. After two hours, guests reportedly told Bethany that they were meant to head towards the sister hotel, which was a mile and a half away, while the family had no shoes on. Bethany claims EasyJet reimbursed the medical expenses and offered her £1,000 worth of vouchers, but she declined as the holiday had cost the family around £4,000. Bethany said: "Someone came by and he said we need to go to the sister hotel, the next hotel along the road. "It was like Chinese whispers, the guests were passing the message because no one was telling us anything. "We all started walking to the sister hotel which was a mile and a half further on. That was hell because we were all barefoot, carrying the children, and the roads were awful. "The next day we were told the fire started in the boiling room and that there were no fatalities. We were allowed to go back to the hotel to get our stuff. "We went into the building and the state of it was horrific. We managed to get out passports, but most of the stuff wasn't worth taking. You could tell the flames hadn't reached the room but the smoke had been terrible. "Things like the children's teddies and comfort blankets that they've had since babies are stuff you can't replace. "All five of us were on medication for the remainder of our time there. My husband was told he had [lung issues from smoke inhalation], the two children had an eye infection, I had severe headaches that wouldn't go away and my blood pressure was high. "They originally offered us £1,000 in vouchers which I refused to accept so they came back with £1,600 in vouchers and I also refused. We got nothing. The holiday cost around £4,000 in total." The hotel was contacted for comment. EasyJet said they had conducted an independent assessment and until hearing the outcome of a formal investigation by the relevant authorities, they will not be offering this property to their holidaymakers. An EasyJet spokesperson said: "We're really sorry to hear that Ms Wallace and her family were impacted by the fire at the hotel and we understand how distressing this must have been. "Our team in destination, and our 24/7 On-Holiday Support team were in touch with Ms Wallace at the time to provide alternative hotel accommodation, medical care, and any further help needed. "We're still in contact with Ms Wallace to offer our support, including providing an insurance letter to help with reimbursement of personal items lost and additional expenses, offering trauma support counselling, and a full refund of her holiday cost. "The safety and wellbeing of our customers is our highest priority."
