Trump orders Defense Department to send an additional 2,000 National Guard troops to LA anti-ICE riots

The Trump administration announced it'll be deploying an additional 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles as the city enters its fourth night of violent anti-ICE riots. President Trump ordered the Department of Defense on Monday to send out the additional troops just two days after his administration sent out its first round to help control the massive crowds of protesters in downtown LA. With the new group, more than 4,000 Guard troops would be stationed in the California city. Yuri Gripas/UPI/Shutterstock It's unclear how many federal, state, and local authorities have been sent to tackle the protests, but on Monday, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced that 700 active-duty Marines would also be dispatched. Meanwhile, California Gov. Gavin Newsom also said he is working to 'surge over 800 additional state and local law enforcement officers to ensure the safety of our LA communities,' he wrote on X. Advertisement The additional 2,000 National Guard troops likely won't begin movement towards California for another day or two as the order is finalized, one official told the Associated Press. 4 There will be a total of 4,100 National Guard troops in Los Angeles when the new group arrives. REUTERS As of Sunday, around 2,000 protesters were estimated to be participating in the demonstrations, which continued on Monday night. At least 56 people were arrested over the weekend. Newsom, who has already filed a lawsuit against Trump for deploying the National Guard in the first place, said that bringing in another batch would not only endanger the public but also scorn the soldiers. Advertisement 'The first 2,000? Given no food or water. Only approx. 300 are deployed — the rest are sitting, unused, in federal buildings without orders. This isn't about public safety. It's about stroking a dangerous President's ego,' Newsom wrote on X. 'This is Reckless. Pointless. And Disrespectful to our troops.' 4 The LA anti-ICE protests started last Friday. Getty Images LA Mayor Karen Bass echoed Newsom's sentiments as she accused the Trump administration of purposefully creating 'disorder and chaos' in the city by deploying so many soldiers. Advertisement 'I feel like we are part of an experiment that we did not ask to be a part of,' Bass said. 4 56 people were arrested over the weekend. REUTERS She later pleaded for the federal government to 'stop the raids.' 'I hope that we will be heard because our city is trying to move forward, and I believe the federal government should be supportive,' Bass said. Trump officials slammed both Bass and Newsom for allowing the protests to turn into violent and destructive riots. 'Gavin Newsom has done absolutely nothing, Mayor Bass has done absolutely nothing,' DHS Secretary Kristi Noem told Fox News host Sean Hannity Monday. The last time a sitting president circumvented a governor's power to activate the National Guard was in 1965 when President Lyndon B. Johnson called on the Alabama National Guard in spite of the then-governor's orders to protect civil rights protesters from the police while they marched from Selma to Montgomery.

Doechii Blasts Trump's ‘Ruthless' Deployment Of Military Against Protesters In BET Awards Speech

Doechii graciously accepted her first BET Award on Monday, but not without taking a moment to address the protests in Los Angeles over the Trump administration's ongoing immigration raids. 'As much as I'm honored by this award,' the rap star, 26, began her acceptance speech from the Peacock Theater in downtown LA, 'I do want to address what's happening outside of the building.' 'There are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities in the name of law and order,' the Grammy winner continued. 'Trump is using military forces to stop a protest. And I want y'all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic rights to protest, the military is deployed against us.' 'What type of government is that?' Doechii added, distressingly. The Grammy winner boldly called out how 'people are being swept up and torn from their families' before ending with a unifying message. 'I feel it's my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people,' Doechii concluded. 'For Black people, for Latino people, for trans people, for the people of Gaza, we all deserve to live in hope and not in fear, and I hope we stand together, my brothers and my sisters, against hate. And we protest against it.' The rapper's biting criticism of Trump comes after U.S. officials said the president authorized the deployment of 2,000 additional National Guard members to stop protests that erupted in LA over the weekend in response to the president's aggressive immigration policies. According to Reuters, the U.S. military will also temporarily deploy roughly 700 Marines to the city until more National Guard troops can arrive. Trump first ordered the National Guard to LA on Friday, as law enforcement clashed with protesters who criticized raids carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Some of those protesters were met with tear gas and pepper spray, NPR reported, after they gathered outside of a detention center on Sunday where detainees were initially held. On Saturday, ICE wrote in an X post that it arrested 118 immigrants as it attempted to enforce immigration law in the area. In his own Truth Social post, Trump slammed the 'Radical Left protests' while thanking the National Guard for a 'job well done' in responding to them. Since the protests began, Trump has floated the idea of invoking the Insurrection Act, which would give him the authority to respond to civil unrest by deploying the military. On Monday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit against Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to stop further deployment of the National Guard.
