A single incident brought Sydney's train network to a standstill – again. Here's why it keeps happening

Once again, vulnerabilities of Sydney's rail network have been exposed, bringing the city to a standstill. Unlike train systems in most global cities, almost all rail lines converge over a short stretch in the city's west. Complicating the issue further is a reliance on hand-delivered paper communications between train staff.
At peak hour on Wednesday morning, buses were packed with frustrated commuters who normally rely on trains to get from Sydney's north shore into the city.
'Nah, mate, I'm on a bloody bus,' a banker from Roseville wearing a three-piece suit said into his AirPods as he tried to explain why he was late for a meeting.

It was 18 hours after a live wire with enough voltage to instantly kill a human fell on the top of a train, trapping 300 passengers onboard and grinding all heavy rail lines – with the exception of the Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra line – to a halt, but train riders across the city had still been warned to avoid using the network. Some lines had resumed, with heavy delays, but where exactly they were running was unclear.
The banker from Roseville had checked the TripView and Google Maps apps but was unable to ascertain if trains were even running from Roseville station, a short stroll from his home. Instead, he walked roughly half an hour to an arterial road to catch a bus into the city. Bus after bus whooshed past, too full to pick up passengers.
'Sydney, it's the best city in the world, until the trains cark it again,' he said.
While transport chiefs and the state premier, Chris Minns, swiftly apologised to commuters and promised a fare-free day next week, the pattern felt all too common.
An independent review into the incident and train unreliability more broadly will soon begin. However, experts, including former senior rail department leaders, say there is little that can be done to prevent city-wide outages from recurring.
While technical issues are unavoidable on a rail network that hosts 400m trips each year, the latest outage has reignited the nagging question on the minds of millions of Sydneysiders: how can just one incident on one train at a station with multiple tracks bring down an entire city's rail network?
Increasingly, another question is front of mind: how can communications from transport authorities be so poor when the worst does happen?
The answer to the first question is easier to comprehend, and dates back to plans made in the early 1900s – including a famous vision for new lines from Sydney Harbour Bridge engineer John Bradfield – about how to expand the rail network to cater to a growing Sydney.
Rather than a master plan for new lines independent of each other – as modern metro and underground systems were increasingly being built throughout the 20th century – the approach for Sydney was to take advantage of the huge capacity of the six tracks that comprise its main western railway between Central and Strathfield.
In cities such as London, commuters can avoid a bottleneck or outage on one line by switching to another to dodge a problem section of track. But almost all heavy rail services in Sydney's suburban network – including trains to the Central Coast, Blue Mountains, City Circle or Airport – are routed to pass through the Central-Strathfield corridor.
'A lot of our lines are tangled with each other,' Sydney Trains CEO, Matt Longland, said. 'At this critical pinch point … one incident in a location like this can bring down a significant part of the network.'
In the case of Roseville station on the North Shore line, city-bound trains do not traverse the Central-Strathfield stretch before reaching the CBD, but services then continue on the same tracks to the western suburbs past Strathfield. Once any track is closed, the conga-line of trains using it must halt, and city-wide timetables go out the window.
Attempts have been made in recent years to detangle the train lines, and on Wednesday, Longland said 'simplifying' the network would be examined as part of the review.
The Eastern Suburbs line, constructed in the 1970s, and new Metro lines are independent and weren't harmed by Tuesday's outage – the more complicated task is restructuring the network's overall design to avoid a single point of failure.

Other issues are easier to address.
Communications to passengers on Tuesday evening were frenzied and inconsistent. A snap press conference was called for 4.30pm and commuters urged to 'plan ahead' to make alternative travel plans home.
There were chaotic scenes at Sydney's Central station as thousands of commuters heading home flooded platforms to board trains that were mostly not running. Departure information screens did not display up-to-date information and station staff gave conflicting messages about how commuters should get home.
Widely used travel apps which rely on government data were rendered useless as timetabled services were abandoned in favour of shuttle train services not reflected in apps. This, however, did not stop station staff relying on Google Maps and TripView to give travellers incorrect advice.
Minns has said that communications will be examined in the snap review of the incident.
'[Even] if there's no information because the problem hasn't been diagnosed yet, well that's still information that would be valuable [for commuters] to have,' Minns said. 'Even if it is inconvenient, even if it is sometimes embarrassing for the government, it's still crucial for commuters to know.'
However, improving internal staff communications will also be essential.
Multiple rail sources speaking on the condition of anonymity have told Guardian Australia that in some parts of the network, information about disruptions is delivered to staff on trains by hand-delivered notes, including writing on carbon paper to replicate messages.
'Parts of the system remain very archaic, hand-delivering paper to drivers and guards,' one source said.
Another added: 'This is a network that started in 1855 and many parts of the network operate under historic practices. It's hard to update all at once when you're dealing with thousands of kilometres of track.'
For now, before the review can be conducted and findings implements, Sydneysiders should not be surprised by more city-wide train failures.
After months of industrial action-related outages, and with the memory of a horror run of similar rail outages in the weeks before the NSW Coalition lost the 2023 election and Labor formed government, Minns appears under no illusions about the importance of ensuring trains run smoothly.
'I stay up at nights worrying about this,' he said.

A suburban health clinic has issued a desperate plea to the mystery jogger who continues to repeatedly use their doorstep as her personal toilet. The Asbestos Diseases Society of Australia in Perth has turned to the public for help following a series of bizarre early morning defecations in recent months, which were all captured on CCTV. Fed up with the unwelcome surprises, staff have released footage of the woman caught in the act, which has also been shared with authorities. They first thought it was a one-off and felt sorry for the culprit when the poo jogger first struck on December 8. She dropped her shorts to answer nature's call just before 6am on March 20 and was almost caught in the act by a passing car before returning around the same time days later on April 1. Baffled staff decided enough was enough when the woman defecated outside their workplace last week. 'Coming in and finding this in the morning is extremely distressing for our staff,' ADSA chief executive Melita Markey said Nine News. 'We (initially) thought, 'Oh, someone's got in a bit of distress and did what they had to do. Staff are baffled as to why the women keeps returning, given the clinic is located within close proximity of a 24-hour petrol station and public toilets. 'It is a biohazard and they are putting people at risk, putting our staff at risk, our clients at risk and also themselves,' Ms Markey said. 'I believe it's a cry for help, (I don't know) why she targets us ... We'd love her to come in and see our GP and see if we can do something to help her.' Psychologist Grant Brecht suspected the behavior could be a sign of obsessive compulsive disorder 'They believe that if they don't do something then something terrible or awful could happen to themselves or someone they love,' he explained Dr Brecht aired the same theory in 2018 when high flying businessman Andrew Macintosh was famously unmasked as the Queensland 'poo-jogger'. Macintosh was named, shamed and charged after he got caught while crouched in the act, a piece of toilet paper in hand in front of a secret camera. 'They are seeking a thrill and they get addicted to the way it makes them feel ... equating it to taking a hit of heroin,' he told the Sydney Morning Herald at the time. 'It can make them feel invincible ... it can also tie into the idea of delusions of grandeur.' In the meantime, the ADSA has posted signs and images of the jogger outside the building in a desperate attempt to ward her off. 'If anyone has any information or can identify this individual who was caught on security camera, please contact the ADSA,' the organisation post online.

Israel Folau has criticised New South Wales Police officers after they appeared to tell a street preacher to leave an area surrounding the Sydney Opera House. Evangelist Mike McCarthy, 72, published a clip of himself being confronted by two police officers and multiple security guards outside the iconic Australian landmark. He was also seen holding a sign that read: 'Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. There is no other way to the father but by me. John 14:6.' Police were heard urging Mr McCarthy to leave the area. They justified their instruction by claiming he was in violation of a set of bylaws. '[Security] have given you just a simple request to leave the sign over there. They do have bylaws here, governing this area,' one officer said. 'You've refused to comply with them and you've also failed to stop to speak with the security guard. Local evangelist Mike McCarthy filmed the moment five security guards and two NSW police officers confronted him over his sign 'Now since then, they've asked you multiple times, and as I understand, because I have dealt with him in the past, they've tried to be reasonable with you.' The video has gone viral on social media, with several outlets picking it up. Folau, a cross-code rugby player, who began his career in the NRL with the Melbourne Storm before switching over to play rugby union, took to Instagram to comment on a clip of the incident published on the social media platform by 2GB. The former Wallabies player wrote: 'Holding up a sign of any other religion and or a pride message would get a pass. 'They want to suppress everything about Jesus. 'Shows you he is the only way, truth and life.' The footy player is known to have deeply religious beliefs, having grown up as a Mormon and has previously held sermons at his local church. In recent years, Folau, 36, has been looking to make a move to get back into playing first-grade rugby in Australia and for the Wallabies, following his explosive sacking in 2019. It came after he had published an explosive social media meme on Instagram stating 'hell awaits' homosexuals. Rugby Australia determined he had breached it's player's code of conduct. Mr McCarthy fired back and asked the officer to explain what he has done wrong and which laws he retained violated. 'No, you're going to have to tell me what I'm doing wrong or I'm not going anywhere,' he said. 'This is Australia. The Constitution of Australia says I can preach religion anywhere within Australia. 'That's all I'm doing, and I'm not even doing that. I'm just walking around, looking at that.' The officer informed Mr McCarthy he was violating the bylaws governing the Opera House's premises. The bylaw prohibits a person from distributing or displaying 'by oral, visual written, electronic or other means, an advertisement, sign, bill, poster or other promotional material'. 'I'm not interested in bylaws. I'm interested in being free,' Mr McCarthy said. 'What are you going to do, are you going to arrest me?' In the 12-minute clip, shared to his YouTube channel 'Mike with a mic' , police urged Mr McCarthy to move away from the area as he was violating a set of bylaws The officer responded: 'I don't want to. I'm just asking you to leave.' Mr McCarthy replied: 'On principle I'm not going to leave, because I'm an Australian citizen. If I can't walk anywhere in Australia with this sign, there is a problem.' The confrontation ended peacefully after Mr McCarthy walked away with his sign to Circular Quay. NSW Police said no move-on direction was issued, however, Mr McCarthy told 2GB host Ben Fordham on Monday that such an order was 'threatened'. 'I wasn't trying to be difficult, I was just sticking up for my rights and I believe we all should,' he said. The Christian preacher cited the Australian Constitution section 116 outlining the freedom of religion and stipulates that the Commonwealth is prohibited from making laws which prohibit the free exercise of religion. Mr McCarthy believes the bylaws do not apply, as section 109 of the constitution stipulates federal law prevails when a conflict arises between federal and state government laws. He told Fordham he was not shocked that security had called the police as it 'happens to us frequently'. Police informed the 72-year-old he was violating a bylaw which stipulates signs are prohibited from being displayed on the Opera House's premises 'I was hassled about walking on state-owned land, which I believe it is, for just carrying a sign,' Mr McCarthy said. 'Well, a 72-year-old guy with a sign has got to be a clear and present danger, so we got to shut him down. It's just ridiculous. 'I walk around with this sign everyday. We go everyday out on the street and preach the word of God. We pray with people. That's all we do. 'I took it on principle. I'm not just going to stop. I believe I have a right to do this. I'm not contravening any law that I can see. I'm not stirring up people, I'm not creating havoc, I have no loud speaker. I just had a sign in my hand.' Social media users backed Mr McCarthy, with many questioning why police had stopped him but did nothing to stop a large crowd protesting against Israel's war in Gaza ers in the same place in 2023. Protesters, many carrying signs, gathered outside the Opera House when it was going to be lit-up in support of Israel following the Hamas attack in October. 'This man has every right to display his sign and is covered by his and everyone's right to religious expression and freedoms and when you impinge on his rights you are the one breaking the law,' one wrote. Rail disruption hit the network for more than 24 hours, with the line blocked between Hereford and Shrewsbury, after the Transport Police arrested a 32-year-old man who was released under of the people who were injured were taken to hospital and later on board described a "really loud bang" as the train hit the trailer, leaving "debris everywhere".The level crossing takes a farm track across the railway lines and is only used by agricultural vehicles.
