Club to get bowls rolling again after March arson attack
A sports club is ready to get the balls rolling again after suffering an arson attack earlier this year.About £27,000-worth of equipment was damaged at March Con Bowls Club when fire ripped through three storage sheds on New Year's Day.Sheridan Wheeler, treasurer of the Creek Road club, said she was "thrilled by the generosity of locals".She said that although more fundraising needs to be done, the club will be back in action when the new season starts in May.
Ms Wheeler said members were "absolutely devastated" by the arson."The fire took equipment, tools, woods, our storage sheds, and a large ride-on mower was stolen, too," she said.Ms Wheeler set up a fundraising drive which has so far raised almost £1,500.
Rob Webb, 67, said he "felt like crying" when he heard about the attack."I thought that my bowls career was over, but hopefully we have pulled it around and we will be back in May," he said.He said that because the mowers were either stolen or burnt, the groundsman was having to cut the green with a small domestic mower, which was "taking all day".
Cambridgeshire Police said the case had been filed "pending further investigative opportunities coming to light".

Two men murdered a dad-of-one they mistakenly thought was a paedophile. Mark Roberts and David Garland killed Michael Wheeler after they found news reports about a man – also called Michael Wheeler – who sexually abused two 13-year-old girls in 2003. Prosecuting, David Elias, KC, said Mr Wheeler, 37, from Yeovil, Somerset, was not the same person and had no convictions for child sexual offences. He was also friends with both men but owed £100 to Roberts. When Mr Wheeler disappeared, his mum was suffering from a terminal illness and passed away before she found out what happened to her son. Garland and Roberts then hid his body, and three weeks after Mr Wheeler's death, police received information he had come to serious harm. They found no proof of his being alive after 24 August 2024. One of the last sightings of him was on CCTV at a petrol station just a few hours before his death. His remains were eventually found in a derelict caravan on farmland in Yarlington on Wednesday 25 September. Detective Superintendent Lorett Spierenburg said: 'Michael Wheeler was brutally murdered by people he had considered as friends. More Trending 'He was killed over a £100 debt and because they wrongly decided he had been jailed for child sex offences in 2003, when he would have been just 16 years old. 'The defendants gave Michael no opportunity to tell them they were wrong. Instead, they took the life of a man whose last words to his ex-wife were of love for her and their daughter.' Roberts, 39, of Juniper Close, and Garland, 40, of no fixed abode, were both remanded in custody pending a sentencing hearing, expected to be Friday 13 June. Head of Cambridgeshire Police to step down after seven years
The chief constable for Cambridgeshire Police will step down from the position in September. Nick Dean has been in the role for seven years after he became head of the force in Dean previously announced he would retire in 2023, but abandoned the plans when he "realised now is not the right time".The force confirmed the end of his contract and applications for the role remain open until the 11 June.
